I can relate to the rolling off the bed. I just can not get out without sliding my legs over the edge which forces me to sit up.

I agree, it isn't always easy. Some days I still have to slide off the edge of the bed and use the momentum just to get upright. Some days even walking hurts but I still make myself do it. Maybe not as far or for as long but I have to keep moving. My sister uses the recumbent bike and for her it works. The bikes have always caused me more pain. You will find the exercise that works for you and then just keep going, even if it hurts. We have to keep moving.

That is great that the water therapy helps you. The key to staying flexable is to keep moving. But it is hard for us to do.

I have tried to walk. I can for short distances no problem, but if I try to walk further then that, I feel like I am going to pass out. My shoulder start hurting, and my legs hurt really bad. My rheumatologist sent me to physical therapy. I tried the bike, had no problem. The exercises I could do. When I went home I could not walk in the house without severe pain! This went on for a couple of weeks. Then the therapist got permission that I could go to water therapy! That work wonders. Now I am told by the doctor to get a recumbent bike and do my water exercises. This walking problem started in 2002. I am a lot heavier now then I was then.

I have been living with AS for over 30 years now. Walking has always been my preferred exercise. I can walk for miles and days. Physio had me do stretching and light weights. This has helped me maintain and stay mobile.

Thanks for posting that article! I am going to put it in my "AS Journal" for a reference. There's some really good tips in there. emoticon

I found this article about exercising with Psoriatic Arthritis. Since AS is considered a form of Psoriatic Arthritis I thought it might be helpful to every one here. www.revolutionhealth.com/conditions/

54% of people with PA say that exercise is the best way to cope with it. Only 19% say that medications are the best form of helping. I know exercise has helped me a lot.

Also, make sure all the exercise you do are low impact. Other wise it can cause more damage.

I agree with everything you all wrote. I do pool aquatics but I wouldn't say it's swimming it's more walking in the pool and doing leg lifts but it is all in the pool. It feels and is so much better for us than actually doing these exercises on a flat hard surface. There's plenty of resistance to. So- Les- can you try walking back and forth in the pool to build strength? And I've said it before, Noni is absolutely correct- if it really hurts- stop! See you later- take care!

I can not do the swimming. It makes me hurt really bad. It is interesting that my left side is also the worst.

I fought exercising because all it did was make me hurt more. I went for years being very seditary. Then my doctor ordered me to start walking every day. At first I could only get to the corner and back because it hurt so much. I gradually built it up so I could walk about two miles. And I started losing weight. Last November my doctor sent me to physical therapy. That is the best thing that ever happened to me for the AS. My therapist started me out slowly. Fice minutes on the stationary bike and then a bunch of exercise with the lightest weights available. She had me slowly work up to three reps of each exercise and it really hurt but I stuck to it. As I got better she upped the weights and resistance. After a while I discovered that my over all pain level started going down. I would say from a level 6 to a level three. It made a big difference. But starting out was hard and you have to be presistant.

Try not to let it get you down. Exercising can be really hard sometimes, but it does get easier. Low impact stuff like swimming and walking are your best bet. When I was first diagnosed, my doctor "prescribed" yoga classes to help with the pain. I started going to yoga twice a week, and I've noticed a huge improvement. You might want to look into a yoga or pilates class at your gym, and try to stretch a little flexibility back into your joints, before you move on to more strenuous work outs.

The most important thing is to listen to your body. "No pain, no gain" is a lie. If something you're doing is causing you pain (not discomfort, but actual pain) then stop doing it, and try something else. Pain is your body's way of telling you that something isn't right, and ignoring your body's warnings is just asking for trouble.

Good luck, and try not to get discouraged over this. Persistence will pay off.

I thought exercise was supposed to help AS. I guess it depends on what kind of exercise you do? I tried swimming yesterday and ouch did that hurt. Just on my left side. I am really depressed today because it went so poorly. Well, wait a minute, I walked 15 min. on the treadmill, so I guess it wasn't a total loss.
This chronic pain is really a terrible thing to have.
But, I guess I don't need to tell you guys that?
