We have a simmilar program here in California called the Department for Aging. You do not have to be old to use it. They are who I went through to get my MediCal (medicaid) approval and they got it right through for me. Even this year I got a letter form the Welfare office denighing service and DFA said to ignore it and my medical is still working.

I live in Texas and was denied Medicaid because I do not have children. I was so upset. They pre-qualified me but never asked me if i had kids!!! i then waited 3 weeks for a phone interview that lasted 15 seconds. don't know what to do but am trying to work with DARS now. ever heard of them?

If you are in a group insurance from an employer you have nothing to worry about with being high risk. They take everyone at the group rate. It is when you get independent insurance that they get you for the high risk. I was self-employed and that is when they bumped me to high risk. And it was before I was diagnosed with AS but I had been diagnosed with degenerative joint disease and that was what they determined as high risk. At that time it was my only problem that I was diagnosed with. Then when I was diagnosed with RA and AS they really made it hard on me and that is when I lost my insurance and went without it for almost a year before I got on Medicaid.

Really? I've always been charged more for high risk! Ugh...I have had rotten experiences with insurance companies too. The worst was Assurant Health. Until I'm back on group I have Cinergy Health and they've really come through for me. I do know that a lapse in insurance is one of the worst things to happen to you and to avoid it at all cost.

I think the law does apply if you are on Cobra and looking for personal health insurance. I wish that the current law had been around when I was first diagnosed. At that time my insurance company flagged me as high risk and bumped me off. I then had to get a high risk policy that even with a state subsidy it cost my almost a thousand dollars a month. Insurance companies can no longer bump you off if you are determined high risk and if you do not have a lapse in a policy they have to take you at regular prices. However if you do let the policy lapse they can get you. Blue Cross and Blue Shield are the worst offenders at bumping people. If you are low income after your husband retires you might qualify for Medicaid. You will not qualify for Medicare until you retire.

If you are diagnosed with AS you'll need methotrexate, Humira, or enbrel. something like Humira will be the first thing they prescribe but i'm taking methotrexate now. hope you're doing ok today.

I think the law only applies to group polices. At least I know it does not apply to policies for less than a year.

My husband goes on Medicare at the end of October, and our Cobra will end on the same date. With Anthem, I don't think I will be denied coverage, but they might be able to charge whatever they chose. I am more concerned about charges. My sister-in-law [who worked for an insurance company 20 years ago] thinks they can refuse to cover me at all.

Same sister-in-law now works for a major drug company. She knows how to contact any drug company about discounts, etc. Also, our Council on Aging has counselors about the same thing. I know some things can be obtained at no cost. Advantage of aging I guess.

Actually, I only take allergy meds and blood pressure meds. And Flexeril.

most companies can not deny you coverage due to pre-existing as long as you have not had a lapse. a lapse is normally considered after 50 days. double check of course. i can't tell you how hard it was to find insurance. do yourself a favor and check with blue cross NOW. are you married? do they have group insurance? if so, go that route. pre-exising will be covered. or there's medicade. i'm currently using Cinergy Health. They only cover $100 per visit though, any visit. I tried so many insurance companies. i was so stressed i couldn't sleep. it was a nightmare. luckily i found Assurant Health just in time. they were so lousy i kept looking though. that's when i heard of Cinergy and switched to them. i'm unemployed so when i find another job i'm going to jump up and down for joy because of their group insurance. oh, one more thing. if you take Humira or anything like it- try calling them directly, they'll usually help with the cost.

Wondering if anybody has issues with health insurance because of this diagnosis.

I will only be able to carry my present policy until October. I am worried about getting a new policy because of pre-existing conditions. We are hoping that the same company will continue to carry me for the next four years. It is Anthem Blue Cross and we already have a general idea of the cost.
