Henry is a 1/2 shar pei, 1/4 Labrador retriever, and 1/4 golden retriever. He is pre-judged A LOT. People say that he looks like a pit bull. Some people love pitts and a lot do not like them. Henry is very friendly and out-going. A lot of the time at the dog park, he will go up to the other dog owners to be pet. He has a lot of wrinkles and when he "smiles" he is irresistible and they cannot resist petting him.

I am cautious around any dog that is strange to me. All dogs are cautious & protective.
Little dogs, like mine, have that "I'm not little" syndrome, and think they are big dogs.
One must always use caution approaching any dog.

LOL - I know everyone assumes little dogs want to be held and snuggled. I've met a few that would rather take your arm off than be picked up.

Because my dogs are little they are often called "puppies" when in fact they are adults and people sometimes mistake them for being cuddly...lol...which they can be especially towards me but trust me my pekashu can have quite an attitude if he doesn't want to be approached. So my words of wisdom are don't assume because a dog looks cute and cuddly that it is, he may me a crabby old guy like my little Gizmo!!

Little 45 pound Jen has been called a Rottweiler more times than I can count. When I saw a real Rotty towering over her in a dog park I took her to, I had to laugh. She has a very sweet face though, and it makes people want to pet her, even while she's hiding behind my legs. I always ask from a distance if she can meet other dogs and until I get a yes, I tend to keep on walking with Jen. Do I act differently around different breeds? I haven't yet. Some neighbors had some pitbulls who used to get loose and come on our property now and then and I wasn't afraid of them. They were very shy and would run from me. Another neighbor was terrified of them even though they had never approached him.
We used to have a wolf hybrid who lived nearby and was owned by some people who lived through the woods from us and used to allow to run free. He "packed up" with some domestic dogs who lived in the general area and also used to come visit us. He kept his pack in line and I respectfully kept my distance except for once when he let me touch him. He came near me when I was sitting by the pond meditating and allowed me to touch him for a few seconds and then he was back on his way.

Do you ever "judge" a dog by it's appearance? Has/does your dog ever experienced this?

Personally, I never even judge a dog by it's breed. They are just as different as people and you don't know where the dog has come from. Every dog is approached with respect and I ask owners (from a distance if possible) if it is ok to greet (both for dog and human).

Everyone seems to think because Gypsy is a lab (mix) she is friendly. She's not exactly unfriendly but prefers strangers keep a distance. I'm constantly asking people to leave her alone. Some people are afraid of here just because she is a big black dog. It's not right but I don't argue.

Tazzy actually is the one anyone can approach and adults seem cautious of her. Guess she has two strikes big black dog and jowls.
