Once I had a child of my own, my parents and brother would come to my house Christmas morning to see what Santa had brought Melody. I would cook breakfast for everybody. We would open any presents under our Christmas tree. Then for lunch we would all meet at my mom and dad's and open the presents under their tree. I miss those days!

We also open one present on Christmas eve - though now we have a White Elephant with my extended family so we count that as our one present.

We also have cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning!

You have to burn it to earn it!

When the kids were growing up we used to save all our loose change during the year. Then, at Christmas time, we would count it all up & use it to buy our tree.

The kids had a lot of fun saving & counting the money & this allowed them to participate & associate pleasure with saving.

When my daughter was growing up, she and I would go the Friday after Thanksgiving to get our Christmas tree. It was always quite an adventure for the 2 of us and somehow always seemed to rain. But, we enjoyed ourselves no matter.

I am really enjoying reading all the different traditions. I hope to have many more to read when I return next week.

Our French-Sicilian Catholic tradition encouraged us to keep the Christmas tree & the Nativity set up until January 6th (the Feast of the Epiphany -or- otherwise known as the Feast of the 3 Wise Men).

When the Christmas tree was set up & the Nativity set, at first there was no Baby Jesus (until Christmas Eve).

The 3 Kings (Wise Men) were placed far away from the manger scene & would get "closer" everyday until January 6th (their feast day) when they "arrived" at the Nativity scene.

It was fun & gave me something to do - - (carefully moving the 3 wisemen day by day closer to the manger until January 6th).

Then, on Jan. 6th, my Mom would bake a special flat cake & hide a "surprise" bean in it.
Whoever found it would be crowned "King" (or Queen).

What I didn't know is that she baked it with a toothpick right next to the bean so she knew where it was & the toothpick would disappear b-4 the cake was served to us.

- - - That's how I was able to "win" every year. ha ha ha ha.

We continued the family tradition with our kids who also enjoyed it.

Since my husband used to be in the military we started going to a movie matinee on the holidays, after all the excitement has died down and we've eaten. We still live out of state and now that our children are grown they're busy with in-laws and we still go to the movies on the holidays. Sometimes they'll come along if they're not busy.

My favorite tradition was what we called the 'Jesus Dinner.' On Christmas day we would have a regular Christmas feast, but on Christmas Eve we would eat what Jesus ate. At least sort of--when we were kids it was more fishsticks, cheese and olives, but it was a fun way to be involved in the religious aspect of Christmas. Last year my husband and I did a 'Jesus Dinner' and had a lot of fun with it. We're visiting my family this year, so I'm hoping to do it again with them.

Always kept the tree up after the new year! Most of the time we would take it down New Year's day.

We always put our tree up the weekend of Thanksgiving or the following week if we weren't home that weekend. Then we took it down before the New Year. My mom always said it was bad luck to have the tree up when the new year came in. I have heard others say just the opposite. How about your family? Tree down before or after the new year?

We also got to open one gift on Xmas eve! When I woke up on Christmas Day I was allowed to open up my stocking from Santa but nothing else until the rest of the family arrived. My mom also made marzipan cookies after I was asleep on Christmas Eve, but I thought there were from Santa.
