It could be that she has been appropriated by Disney Rock Trolls.

It is amazing how the old stories find new life. Too bad no one puts it all together so kids and adults know where it came from.

I believe that would be an excellent name for your beach LOL.

In the "Frozen" movies, the Rock Trolls like to spend much of their time in rock form. Are these Rock Trolls shirt-tail relatives of Cailleagh? Were they inspired in part by the story of Cailleagh, or did the writers of Frozen think that they were being quite inventive? It's interesting to see how glimpses of the old lore show up in modern days.

Btw, I'm thinking of contacting Mendocino County, here in California, and suggest that they rename Bowling Ball Beach as Rock Troll Beach!

Amanda, I'm glad you are enjoying the information. This goddess surprised me when I decided to write about her.

Am, I've never been snowshoeing. It sounds fun. And it sounds like the perfect way to celebrate Cailleach. I thought her turning into a rock was very interesting. I don't know that I've seen it from another goddess.

Cailleach is one cool crone goddess. Today, where I am, it's grey and chilly, with a steady. soft rain. Kind of a quiet day, well suited to contemplating a Goddess of Winter.

I was just out walking in the rain with my black dogs. The rain is light enough that the walk was quite pleasant. I hear that this storm is dropping a lot of snow on the mountains, and I swear I'm going to get up there to enjoy some snowshoeing soon.

I love that Cailleach transforms info a boulder during the warmer months! Sort of an inverse hibernation.

Cailleach hail to us from the British Iles. Much of her story is a mystery. She is often thought to be the crone aspect of the triple goddess. She reigns supreme from Samhain until Beltain, appearing in late fall just as the earth enters its long winter's rest.

Scottish Celts belives Cailleach to be the mother of all gods and goddesses, although her origins predate the Celts. She was worshipped by the indigenous people of the Isles and adopted into the Celtic pantheon. Her myths tell us how during her winter's reign she used her hammer and anger to create the Scottish mountains and Loch Ness.

Cailleach is the Queen of Winter. Most often She is described as a one-eyed giantess, with dark blue skin and snowy white hair, and rust-colored teeth, she is no great beauty. She dresses in grey and often covers her head with a kerchief. She rules through the fear of the harsh winter storms. The single eye is said to allow her to see beyond the duality and into the "oneness" of all beings. Occasionally she appears as a black cat.

During the winter Cailleach walks through the land tapping her hammer (sometimes a staff) as she walks along, freezing the ground and leaving frost in her wake. When she is done she throws her hammer or staff under a holly or gorse bush and transforms into a grey bolder. The stone is said to stay wet all during the warmer months, as she waits for winter to roll around once again. It's also thought this is the reason grass never grows under holly and gorse bushes.

To honor this goddess place gray stones on your altar along with a sprig of holly. Take a walk on a cold winter's day and see the stark beauty of Cailleach's work. Enjoy aged foods and apples as you warm yourself by the fire.
