Hestia, the first and last and goddess of hearth and home. She was the first born (and thus the fist swallowed) of Kronos and Rhea. She was known for her calm, gentle nature. She was sure and complete within herself. Hestia never married.

Hestia was a creator in her own right. Her invention of the town hall, a place to rationally discuss business for the town, gave birth to democracy.

She was the goddess of household affairs. Tirelessly tending the sacred fires in the heart on Olympus, she set events into motion. Simple circle hearths were the alters of Hestia and every home had one. The hearth was a gathering place for prayers and nourishment. She kept guard over the household bringing peace and unity to those gathered inside, as long as the fires burned.

To honor this goddess, the heart of Olympus, light a simple candle and invite her into your home. You can carry a small matchbook in your pocket, and when you seek her assistance strike one. Or perhaps my personal favorite, cook a meal with your family (or friends) and have everyone help with the prep.

Home, after all, is where the heart(h) is.
