I think fasting for a spiritual reason is one thing. There are those who chose to do it, to awaken, and become aware of transcending and gaining the knowledge that the flesh, the body, while a temple, when deprived of certain things becomes stronger, or they do it, as a form of worship, to strive for clarity.

Those people, for the most part are and have the rites and rituals of it, and it's a totally diffrent thing, then refusing to eat because you want to be thinner.

I can say, I have thought about it, to aid the start of weight loss, but truthfully, eventually you have to learn to consume again, so you aren't treating the core issue, just a part of the problem itself. Plus, when you see those who suffer with the opposite disorder of binge eating the health risks are just as horrifying. To starve, or to over eat, it's about finding that balance, and trying to see food, not as a weapon, or a tool against yourself, not a reward, but as fuel. As part of life.

Meh! rambled a lot here! Mwah! have a great day!

I've fasted in my past. When I was around 13 or 14 a group of my friends and I decided that we should fast on Tues and Fridays (this is when I lived in Kenya). We kept this up for months. I don't even know WHY we did it. One of the friends in the group was a year or so older - I think she was the instigator and it was due to body image. She came from a household that was strict with regards to gender roles and she was to grow up to be a good wife and mother (the sooner the better). So I think her motivation was to be attractive to find a mate (at 15/16??) I finally broke the fasting thing because I swam for Kenya's national team and I could tell that my performance was suffering.

I've tried smaller fasts since - usually "detox" fasts. I feel "noble" at first (hey everyone - check out my control and willpower! Yes, yes - admire me!) but that nobility falters then crashes and burns after a few days when I get ravenous! I won't be fasting again on purpose.

I've envied anorexics, wanted to be bulimic, and anesthetized myself with food more times than there are grains of sand on the beach.

Maybe fasting would help. I wonder. I know I shouldn't wonder but I do.

Yes I have fasted or more to the point, starved. And was bulimic and was exercise bulimic and was addicted to laxatives.
I was one of those people that discovered the 'pro-ana' movement in the late 90's and unfortunately a lot of those problems are still in my head. I have done a lot of damage to my body, and luckily I have been purge free for several months.

Back in the day I had tried fasting for 3-4 weeks but when I couldn't go to the bathroom that ended that! I haven't been able to fast since then. During Lent it is very hard me to fast. However, now there are different guidlines for fasting. It is not that hard anymore but still I find it very very hard.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

its a shame that alcoholism like food obessessions/obesity is a disease. It dosent go away but its like manageable somehow or maybe there are periods of managability.

But I hear what you are saying TOTALLY.

Sometimes I wonder at what age will my obessession with food and obesity which has consumed and wasted YEARS of my life... be solved or controlled?

who knows.

BUT

what I do know is that we can walk this journey together, hand in hand emoticon and safely.

My mother did this when I was young. She would fast for 3 days and eat what she wanted on the 4th. I remember my grandma fussing at her that it was dangerous. I look back at pics of her from that time and she looks gaunt. Not healthy at all.

I wish it worked. I sometimes think it would be easier to just quit eating like an acoholic quits drinking. Still hard but easier than trying to control this mess.

Starting Weight: 351
5% = 18 pounds
4th goal = 281
Cal Range=1800-2200
Water Goal=8 cups
Exercise Goal = 40 min/4 times per week

you guys had me giggling lol

I remember a period of time when I would chew my food and spit the food IN a cup instead of swallowing it.

How did I get that idea? Saw it on a TV special of a young lady who did that and kept skinny that way, EXCEPT the difference was that she could NOT swallow food because she messed up her swallowing parts by constantly throwing up, so now she has to live with a tube sticking outside her body from her side. That is why she chewed and spit in a cup because she could not swallow.

I tried that for two or three days and it was GROSS. Like her, I had plastic cups of chewed up food all over the place and it was gross, so I threw all the red plastic cups in the trash and just stopped it. To me.... its a gross thing to do. emoticon

I am embarrassed to say that I did this when I was in high school. I wasn't even that overweight back then. But, I went for more than 2 days and didn't eat at all. I only drank water and chewed gum. I got really sick and dizzy and started throwing up bile and when my mom found out what I had done she made me eat. I couldn't believe I did that. I just figured I could lose a few lbs and then I'd eat something. I would never ever do that now. I have realized there are no quick fixes and doing something like a liquid diet or deprivation is only a temporary solution, because no one can keep that up forever. People don't want to admit to themselves that in order to change their bodies, they have to change their lifestyle and form new habits. I have been been able to do that, although it's not perfect, this is the first time in my life where over the course of 5 months I've lost weight and not gained.

I have a lot of mixed feeling about fasting.. I did it once in my 20s and lost 40 lbs but right after gained it all back..
I know some people do it 1 or 2 or even 3 to 4 weeks,
and I know there are detox fasts too. or juice or raw food fast.. best thing is to read up on it..
and for me I would only do it as a detox fast for two days if I felt I needed to recharge my system
but this weight is going to come off. it took 12 years from the time I had my last baby to get this big that was with all the bad eating and not working out.. not that I was working at gaining weight.. but.. it came on over the time.. I dont think the weight is going to come off over a 12 year period but.. it is not going to come off quick.. it has come off safe for about 9 mths..

Good Luck with your choice..

Yes, years and years ago. Like many of us I went through an anorexia / bulimia stage. Truth be known I kind of miss it, but wouldn't be able to do it now.

I have thought about it. Even gone as far as tried to make myself throw up after binging. First of all can't do it. Second neither one fixes my relationship with food. Just like Oprah's shakes were only a temporary fix. Didn't fix the problem!

One time I saw the Oprah show where she drank nothing except shake Liquids for like 3 or 4 months to get thin and

I wondered... could I drink myself thin?

No!

Why?

Because ya know... I need and want to CHEW food.

Deprivation is just NOT in my chemical makeup LOL
