Twas the night before Christmas, when all through Birdland
Not a creature was stirring, not even Gausman.
The jerseys were hung in the lockers with care,
In hopes that Opening Day soon would be there.

The O's fans were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Matt Garza danced in their heads.
And Paul in his jammies, and I in my cap,
Had just settled in for a long winter's nap.

When out on the infield there came such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to Camden Yards I flew like a flash,
Who would interrupt my sleep, who could be so brash?

The moon on the Hilton reflected just so
Giving the lustre of daytime to the ballpark below
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a baseball game, and nine players to cheer.

With a cranky old skipper, full of vigor and pluck,
I knew in a moment it must be Saint Buck.
His players stood by him, loyal and tall
And he whistled, and shouted, and called on them all!

"Now Tillman! now, Manny! now, Wieters and Hardy!
On, Adam! On, MiGo! on, Nicky and Bundy!
From Crush at home plate! Over the top of the wall!
Now swing away, swing away, swing away all!"

As players themselves, they're nothing too shabby
But the loss of Jim Johnson had made them quite crabby
Duq' tried to appease them with a short-tempered Aussie
But his shoulder was bum, or at least that's the story.

And then, in a twinkling, what I heard was a treat
It was pitching and catching between Tilly and Wiet
As I drew in my head, and was turning around
Down the steps to the dugout came Saint Buck with a bound

He was dressed in all orange, from his shoes to his hat,
Except for the parts that were covered in black.
His foot up on the step, his eye had a gleam,
And he looked like a captain, his ship is the team

His eyes were determined, his demeanor not merry
Though his cheeks were like roses, some might call him scary
His lips were drawn in, pursed together in thought
As he worked out a plan to help his team win a lot

Alongside Saint Buck was a coach much more perky
A stout, happy fellow by the name of Wayne Kirby
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

Buck spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
He filled out the lineup, then turned with a jerk
"McFarland, get out there," and T.J. was eager
He is, after all, a qualified major leaguer.

With a win in the books, Saint Buck gave a nod,
And away his team went as I stood to applaud.
I heard Buck exclaim as he zoomed like a comet,
"Happy Christmas to all, and put a bird on it"

Mathematically, yes, Pragmatically, no.

Consider that last year's team needed 93 wins to qualify as the #2 Wild Card. We have 70 and there are about 30 games left.

Do you feel 23-7 in your bones? More probable is me achieving my weight loss goal.

Just read the last 3 entries. does anyone think we still have a chance? I like to hold on to hope until the very last minute, but that last minute might already be here. emoticon

I concur. Let's assign the starting pitchers as "1" "2" "3" "4" or "5" on a serviceable major league rotation of average overall performance. Here is what I think we have:

"1's" - None
"2's" - Tillman
"3"s" - Chen
"4"'s - Norris and Gonzalez
"5's" - Feldman and Hammel (Hammel was perhaps a 3 last year)

Other guys who could start include Hunter (I like him for the closer tole), MacFarlane (why does a pennant contender burden itself with a Rule 5 guy?), Matusz (the forgotten man) and Britton (a wasted year?). That this list is unimpressive bespeaks a greater weakness.

Now the bullpen. What happened to the vaunted bullpen of last year? The dismantling began early. Luiz shipped to Atlanta, Strop (why give up on that arm?) along with Arietta (ditto) shipped to the Cubs for a rent-a-pitcher. Jim Johnson might be showing some age from overwork, and Tommy and O'Dea are the shining stars of a tarnished group.

Yes, we still have a shot. We better sweep Oakland though. Otherwise, they leave town 2 ahead of us with no more head-to-head games.

I have been frustrated with the pitching all season. When my son and I discuss the O's I commented that the bull pen was mostly solid, though the closer is currently shaky. Yes JJ leads the league in saves, but he also leads with blowns saves and losses.

"Well, what bout long relief?" he asked.

We have and entire rotation made up of long relievers. Most of them can't get out of the seventh inning. If your starter can only go six-plus innings, you have a real problem.

Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible and suddenly you will be doing the impossible -- St Francis of Assisi

Runs differential is the most diagnostic team stat in baseball over the long haul. O's pitching has allowed 26 more runs in 2013 so far than the MLB-average pitching staff does. The O's current Plus-42 runs differential would be Plus-68 if we had league-average pitching.

A Plus-68 runs differential would make us the 4th-best team in the American League, ahead of both Tampa Bay and Oakland. So when looking for something or someone to blame, start with the pitching. The hitting is just fine (third best in MLB overall).

OK Sparkies, what do you think?
