Within the past week I listened to a radio interview of a recently retired major league pitcher. He explained things this way:

Most everyone has used performance enhancing products at one point or another. The reason is that other players do it, and might compete more effectively for a limited number of jobs across a short time window. Some of the products are entirely legal, a few are obviously against the rules, and a great many are in the murky middle-ground of no disclosures of what might really be inside.

Jocks are dumb and do not invest their money wisely. Whether they use PEDs or not, for most their careers are short. The economic incentive to prolong a career another year or two, to play a little better to earn that next big contract, to be a starter just one more season, is huge. When injuries occur, particularly in college or the minors, the quicker back onto the playing field and more assured the path to a professional contract and associated riches. They do anything to ensure that path, as their world is full of washed-up career minor leaguers saying "coulda... woulda... shoulda..."

As long as big money is in the game, the rewards are simply too great for all but the most altruistic to pass on the opportunity to experiment with the latest undetectable PED. And often enough, they do not even know for sure what they are using are PEDs. Very complex and very sad.

So, Bossi, are you telling me that Chris Davis has been taking steroids?
I know that what you said in your message is absolutely true. All that money and fame turns anyone into a totally greedy person. Just look at Justin Bieber!

But does that mean everyone does that? Even Brian Roberts? emoticon

Ah. Connie. Allow me to enlighten you a little.

The money that players earn is so astronomical that they cannot help themselves to seek every advantage, legal and otherwise, ethical and not, moral and not so much, to obtain every advantage to make their careers just as long and successful as they possibly can be. A four-year big league career is more than adequate to set a player and his family up for life, unless they are even more stupid than the average dumb jock.

Until the financial incentive is removed for doing so, players will cheat or try. Sad reality.

The other evening, prior to the game, Mike Bordik and his co-announcer (can't think of his name right now, stood before the TV audience to say that unequivocally "no", chris Davis is NOT taking steroids. This surprised me; I don't recall any announcers saying anything about whether or not Raffi Palmeiro when all that was going on about him. I'm not sure if the Team is incensed because fans are wondering about it; or if it is true and they don't want the truth to come out. As for me, I don't know why any player would use steroids; they're going to get caught. Besides, who wants to lose their baseball "records" because they cheated at their sport?! emoticon

I believe that in baseball as well as in football, rare is the player who genuinely performs better for his second team. Rick Dempsey comes immediately to mind; he was not much in Minnesota or New York. Ditto seemingly, is Chris Davis, if you count is yo-yo Majors/AAA experience with Texas as his first team. We'll see about Strop.

Strop being perfect in three appearance for the Cubs ...
Hmmm
It's the Cubs! Their games don't matter already.

Sorry I have no use for Strop ... I don't understand the baseball conventional wisdom that says that is a player does well for 25% of his career and poorly for 75% then the 25% is what he is "capable" of. Strop is benefiting from a change of environment. Wait for his bad attitude to kick in and see what happens.

Cambridge Connie:

Baseball is a marathon and not a sprint. Chuck Thompson famously once said, you are never as good as you lose when you are winning or as bad as you look when you are losing. Ain't The Truth Cold?!?!

I love the unbalanced schedule, because we play our direct competitors so many times. In 1980 we chased the Yankees for the last 7 weeks of the season and could not catch them because we did not play them again after that raucous 5-game series at Memorial Stadium in early August.

Did you want to chat about the Strop/Arietta trade (Strop is perfect in three games, since), about Chris Davis (steroids?), about Wieters (no way a Scott Boras client resigns with us as a free agent) or about Adams Jones (Is the bubblegum a distraction?).

No, I do not follow the Orioles.

things are happening fast with our Birds this summer and there is lots to talk about. I'm starting this didscussion thread so we'll have a place to share comments about each game.

I want to start with the thrill of Sunday afternoons' game when Adam Jones' homerun brought him and Nick M. in to score and win the game against Mariano Rivera and the Yankees emoticon
