96 & 97 were a surreal experience with a team of overpaid free agent outsiders. When the 83 champs suddenly were old and injured, having really been at their best in about 1980,, management then endeavored to catch a little more lightning from the free agent bottle.

The mistakes of that era are legendary as hallmarks of the beginning of a decline we just now seem to be emerging from: Fred Lynn, Lee Lacy, Rick Burleson, Sid Fernandez...

You and my son David both.

I read a columnist who compared the Baltimore Baseball fans to an owner whose dog has run away too many times, and the O's to that dog "pawing at the stoop for one more chance to come inside." That pretty much sums up my current relationship with the Orioles.

Or maybe I am the jilted spouse who still loves the philandering partner in spite of all the infidelities. I am more than willing to let them make me happy again, but I am reluctant to have my heart broken again.

Let's face it, the 1996 -1997 Orioles were a pack of overachievers too. There hasn't been a really good Orioles team since about 1984, the year of the last world championship.

Tim, as you may recall my pre-season prediction was 75-87. You thought I was overly optimistic; we discussed it here! I doggedly stuck with that through the end of July.

I concur with you on one and done, particularly if we have to head to the west coast to play that wild card game. We match up poorly with Texas, Oakland and California.

That said, right now I hold 18 post-season tickets (a game with 2 and a game with 4 for each of the three rounds - not counting the wild card game). If we have a big run, I will be very happy and very broke.

At the start of the season, I was very pessimistic about this Orioles team. It looked to me (and probably to most sports writers) that this was the same bunch of has-beens and never-weres and never-will-bes that we had been seeing since the tart of the 1998 season. I really though that 100 losses was a reasonable prediction.

Today the finally posted their 81st win for the first time since 1997. I must admit, I am still not ready to trust them. They have a tough schedule for the rest of the season -- 3 games against Oakland and 3 more against Tampa Bay. It may still be that they don't make the Play-in game. And considering that still this team is middle of the pack in everything but Home Runs and Bullpen, well, I think if they do, they might be one and done. Even if they do advance, they will still have to go through Texas to get to the World Series.

But one more win and we can call this season a success. I am already looking forward to this winter see if Dan Duquette and build on this year's success.
