OHMYGOSH Nera, the quilt is beautiful!! Missy was surprised that someone she doesn't know would care enough to notice she was having a tough time. She will be sending you a personal note, but from me...THANKS from the bottom of my heart!!

Hello everyone!! Boy everyone is doing so awesome with getting in walks/runs and making fitness a part of their days. WAY TO GO!!

I have been neglecting the strength training and really need to make that my next challenge. I am getting in around 20 miles a week and I am happy with that but I'm not doing any strength or stretching/yoga and need to do better. How often do you all diversify and do other workouts besides the run/walk?

Stay warm and active all!

Hi team. We are currently at anchor in the Bahamas. Its raining and the anchor is starting to drag. We must go out in the rain and reset it. Sheesh.
Heather, I used to go to yoga class at the gym. It was considered beginners yoga so the poses where not difficult and we held them for a bit. I have used a few YouTube yoga videos.
Must go out in the rain now.

Hi all!

It's been the kind of weekend where I've had to wash the dishes in the bathtub because one of our kitchen pipes is clogged. The dishwasher backed up yesterday afternoon and I spent about an hour mopping up and emptying extra water. Sigh. At least our landlord is on the ball - someone is coming tomorrow to take a look. Hopefully it's a one-day fix so I can get on with my life.

In the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal. Just another thing to deal with.

Got in a good run yesterday and did a ton of walking today.

Have a great night, rookies!

Carrie

Been sick for the last few days. I have the death rattle in my chest and overall malaise. Doc said it's viral bronchitis, but I can walk when I feel up to it. That day is not today.

I'm trying not to panic, because I don't feel like cooking either, which is dangerous for an overweight woman with access to telecommunications technology.

Wish me strength in my time of need.

I actually went walking at our local mall yesterday. Did a couple of laps and boy it tuckered me out. I am way out of shape. Just finished my sunday morning cleaning. Wasn't really feeling it today and pretty much I just vacuumed the floors.

cheprbythedozen: How many kids do you have? My son is about to head off to college next school year, but he is an only child. Kids today seem to apply to more colleges then when I was his age. He has been accepted to three so far and has one offering a partial scholarship. We shall see how it goes.

Hey everyone.

Quick check in...had ringette for most of the day, and managed to get some workouts in around it...win-win!!

Nera, nope, not yet, I talked to the manager today, and they promised they would have it figured out by Monday.

Hugs,
Trish

Okay back from pt visit and drinking tea like she doesn't want me to. But hey I had something put somewhere to have electrical stimulation therapy and if that doesn't call for a reward afterward nothing does. LOL!!! Doris I am not suppose to drink tea because caffeine is an irritant and my pt thinks we can get my incontinence issue under control faster if I stop drinking it for awhile. My whole core is weak I tried to do bridges last night and I was shaking like crazy.
Trish have you and the Canadian postal service finally figured out where the package is?

Bobby if you are doing anything that count as rocking it. I feel thrilled if I get off my butt after supper and go down to the basement. I may end up not sewing or just grabbing something from the laundry room but hey stairs!!!! Do what you can and take pride in it. I know I have the same issue with feeling like I am not doing much but have to look at the positive with this. My positive is I am hitting almost 5K steps a day now. They are not fast working out steps but they are movement and I will take it. Now I have to get ready to go in to work. Due to car issues(hubby's old ford truck needs a brake job or at least we are really hoping that is all it is) son has to drop me off and I have to ride home with hubby. We work close but he works until 5pm so I have to wait for him. My work just shut off overtime so I can't even make a little extra cash while I wait.

I did a blog about a few things that have occurred to me. Please read I would love some feedback on it. thanks

Good morning all!

Running2: I am working at the Free Library of Philadelphia on a grant. My official title is Early Childhood Literacy Outreach Specialist - but I do all kinds of bookish stuff. It's a lot of literacy work in North Philly, in some low-income communities. I love it.

I am quickly learning that my workplace always seems to have food around. Every meeting I go to has some sort of treat. Eeep!

Happy Friday, Rookies!

Skirnir, I am also afraid of heights, and can't watch movies with people on high steel either. It bothers me on narrow trails with sheer drop offs, but I can hike up the sides of wooded mountains without getting too freaked out. After I ran my marathon, I was briefly interested in making an Everest attempt… until I saw the ice falls. I could climb the mountain, but I wouldn't be able to get across the ladder to the other side of the crevasses, and they’re before base camp, I think! By the way, thanks for the encouraging words about my loss.

Bobby, SO glad the Broncos stopped the cheaters!

Kirsten, I started the Runner's World Beginners Yoga for Runners. It's hard!!! But Imma keep at it. Even though I'm sure I looked pathetic, I felt great after. I'll research inverted postures. Thanks for the tip.

Trish, glad the kiddos have such high aspirations. You're the mama!

Bobby, way to go on the baby steps! Keep moving forward!

Carrie, glad you managed to weather the storm okay. What is the new job you’re doing?

IML, I'm envious of your doggie workout buddies. I need to get my dogs in shape! Koda is great on a leash, but Bueller would walk me! I need roller skates when I walk him.

Chepr, I'm sorry to hear that. :( But you seem to have a handle on it!

Doris, I definitely think it's the hip flexor. It's not shooting down my butt. It's starting in the groin and shooting back through to the piriformis. The quads are radiating pain a bit too. Yoga is definitely in the plan.

Okay y'all. I keep hearing Yoga. I need recommendations. I want a tape that will teach me and give me time to get into the pose. Then I'd like to hold it, rather than "flow" or switch from pose to pose in fast succession. What tapes do you all like?

Trish- no hockey players at the moment. It's crazy! Nice b/c I don't have to drive every weekend and be split up from Ryan to get kids to games, but I miss watching them play/skate.
Bobby- you are doing great! don't let that mean voice get to you. You did something 3 days this week and that's more than ZERO days! Keep at it and be kind to yourself.
Bahamas. Boats.Orlando.... *sigh*... I will take today's weather (30ish) as my balmy winter break. LOL! I just walked almost 5 miles (just under 15 min/mile!!) and will be going to lift in another hour. Food is good. Water is good. I measured this a.m. and weighed- emoticon It wasn't what I wanted or expected but I'm keeping on the journey. It won't get any better if I start eating like cwap.
Tomorrow my 18 yr old and I are visiting his first 'away' college campus. He's on his 2nd year of community college and it's time to move on... In August we'll be down to only 8 kids in the house.... my nest is emptying. AND my baby is potty training!!!! HOORAY!!!
Have a good weekend!

Hi team.
Bobby, I'm with Trish on this; you are rocking it! Three days a week is much better than zero days:)
Carrie, so happy that you love the new job.
Nera, why no tea? I must have missed something.
All, stay warm and don't slip on the ice while running, if there is ice where you are. My DD slipped on the ice and broke her ankle. Sheesh.
Me, had a great walk/swim yesterday morning, even though I did not feel 100%. Yesterday afternoon, the reason why I did not feel 100% became known. I am fine, just a nasty infection that some antibiotics will take care of. Did you know that the Doctors in the Bahamas make house calls if you have no car? There was no additional fee for the boat visit:). She even gave me samples of the antibiotics so I did not have to go to the store in a cab. Today, my exercise will consist of a shower and a nap:)
We are inside today as its raining, again. I think it has rained more than not in the last 28 days. Oh well. Could always be worse.

Hey all,
Today was leg day at the gym. It went fairly well, definitely have muscle weakness and imbalance throughout, but it will get better for sure. I have been SOOO hungry all day, ate more than usual, but kept it pretty clean. Monkey had a goalie coach with him tonight, FINALLY, after 5 years of ringette, he gets a goalie coach for a session....LOL better late than never.

Bobbie, you are doing more each day than you have done in a while...that, to me, is rocking it:-)

Tomorrow I have shoulders and back day...we keep on keepin on:-)

Hugs,
Trish

Good morning Rookies!

It's been over freezing for the last few days, so the 2 feet of snow is melting quickly. Not good for flooding, but good for clearing the sidewalks for some running!

Yesterday at work we booked our hotel in Florida for a library conference, so the thought of going to Orlando will help me push through the winter.

Have a great day!

HI all. Seems like everyone is doing well. To those who got snow, I hope it wasn't too bad to shovel. To those who didn't, woo hoo!
Heather, sounds like you have some sciatic nerve issues going on as well. Usually if the pain starts in the lower back and runs down the butt cheek, it's sciatic. I tell you, yoga really helps! I haven't had any pain in my sciatic or ITB since I started doing yoga. I do like to do it on run days as its a good stretch for muscles that get tight while running.
Today, a short run as I am getting over a sinus issue. Every step felt like I had 100 pound weights hanging off me but, time was good:). Then, we biked a few miles to the $2 bar for beer and burgers. Beach, hot tub and yoga later. Not a bad way to spend a day.
Stay safe and don't fall rooks.

Life is fragile. Love, laugh and enjoy.

Rich-HI!!!! I feel like this is a big reunion now.
Carrie-that's alot of snow! YIKES! be careful.
Trish- this auntie is proud of those kids of yours. and PROUD OF YOU!!
Bobby- WAHOO!! I love seeing your updates. Baby steps are great. But big BOO on the sore knee. :(
Running2Myself- adrenal fatigue and low thyroid.
yesterday I walked 5 miles and then lifted weights. Food was pretty good but low on calories and carbs. I have the hardest time with those. You wouldn't think so but when you're not eating junk food and filling up on veggies.... yeah, not many calories.
I started my day with a gentle yoga video and it was nice!! Time to get busy and get kids focused on schoolwork.
Get out there and do your best! These steps toward health are for YOU and your FAMILY so make sure you take care of yourself. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Happy to report that yesterday I got in a little over 5 miles of walking! 3 miles of that was at the walking trail with the dog-we did several HIIT during the walk going with time instead of distance. The mountain cedar is terrible here right now and I pay for that time outside but its hard to complain when we hit low 70's. Today will either be a bodypump class at the Y or getting out my Total Gym out and doing a 20 minute workout.

Sounds like everyone is keeping busy with kids, studying, working out etc. Way to go team!! Keep up the great work and remember to LIVE each day like the gift it is :)

Good morning all!

Bobby - we ended up with about 2 feet. The city is a mess - some streets aren't even plowed yet, and most of the street corners are piled so high that it's like a game trying to find somewhere to cross the street!

Yesterday was the first day that the school district had a snow day and I didn't, since I don't teach anymore. To my pleasant surprise, I wasn't even upset because I actually *like* going into work. I know it's only been a week, but still.

Have a great day, all!

Hey everyone!

Our weekend was crazy busy, a bunch of ringette games, and BC Winter Games practices. Missy won her game, as did Monkey. Monkey had 2 BCWG practices, and smiled throughout both... it is a higher level than what he is playing at, also likely where he should be..he LOVES ringette again! His goal is the Canada Winter Games in a couple of years.

Now I am ready to sleep! I'm calling Monday day 1 as last week it was figuring out the gym and everything. Will measure and keep you posted on results:-)

Hugs and love,
Trish

Another quick one -
Rich, way to go!
Trish - we want pictures!!!
Bobby - woohoo!
Nera - thanks for the tip, I need to do my fume hood.
Heather - does yoga help? Inverted postures are supposed to be great for pf and hip stuff.
Ummm.... dang, that's all I remember.
I took a 30-minute walk break while my clients had church today, only a little studying but everyone at work is keen to quiz me all the time, so I think it was pretty SOLID studying. (explaining diabetic ketoacidosis to non-nurses is great way to study!)

but now.. must... sleep!

Today I did 3.5 miles and climbed 20 floors (according to my Fitbit). Tomorrow I am taking my Husky Skye to the trail nearby and doing the 4 miler so I should get my 5 miles :) I am also going to add Tuesday and Thursday Bodypump classes at the YMCA. Wish me luck on getting into a better exercise routine. Next I need to work on my nutrition-so far I have cut back on portions and I know the next step is to eat more nutritionally.

Hope everyone has a great start to their week and keep on moving!!

I spent time cleaning. And the climbing up and down a ladder so I could clean the top of my kitchen cupboards just wiped me out. They were so greasy and dusty from cooking residue. After some internet research used a mixture of vegetable oil and baking soda. It took that grease off like magic. But it was probably a good strength work out with all the scrubbing.

Okay, back from walk and caught up on some message reading....

Bobby/Heather: I wish I could climb/hike some elevation trails, but I am such a scardy cat. I am so afraid of heights, I close my eyes during spiderman movies. My stomach does complete flips or clenches or something during movies where I am way high looking down and I just don’t think I will ever be able to hike such trails. There are a ton near me though now and meetup groups always seem to do them. I so wish I could.

It’sMyLife: May sign up for a 5k that I did last year in March. I am a walker who is adding in running, as I want to do a faster than 3 hour half marathon. Not sure what intervals I will choose to do for my run walk intervals for my next 5K. Wish I could do a half marathon again about fall or so, but probably won’t make it, as I am just not getting as much exercise with working a bit more.

Trish: Wow, 15k hike. More power to you. That is a long hike.

Heather: 12 pounds lost in 30 days, that is quite good! Congrats!

Kirsten: Glad your cat is okay. That would have probably made me have a heart attack and my family would have had to come running to see what the scream was, or the thud, whichever happened.

Well, we got about two feet of snow here in Philly. It was kind of nice having the day to relax yesterday. But tomorrow it's back to reality. I am still adjusting to my new job - in a good way. It's so different from teaching!

Rock on, Rookies!

Crude, I missed checking in for a few days. Going to head out for that walk, and stop procrastinating and then will read through some of the past days notes.

The hip flexor is bugging be again, and I haven't walked since Wednesday. I need the pointy boot to remind me that I am changing my life, not racing for a finish line.

My hip is really a PITA!!! Kinda literally, even. It starts in the hip flexor (sartorius) and shoots through to the piriformis and lower back (right at the dimple). I just read that it's a result of sitting for long periods of time. Makes sense, given that I'm now at a desk instead of herding 10-year-olds all day.

Need to do some foam rolling and try to ice, methinks. I want to walk tomorrow, but I think I'm going to stick to my neighborhood half-mile loop so I can waddle home if I need to.

Le sigh.

Trish glad to hear the package finally may be there. Just remember cut it open very carefully as the item in the box was a bit too big for it.
I have increased my steps average to 4k for a last two weeks. So getting more movement but still not really active exercise. Guess any improvement towards being active is better than nothing.

itsmylife2 - sounds like a good plan an some times the body needs a few weeks off to come back stronger, you got it!

carrie - good luck and stay safe this weekend i know some areas are 2 ft + not too far from you. we are less than an inch but a couple hrs away are 12 inches, crazy

trish - your rockin it out girlie, 15 k hike oh baby that is a roughie, be safe

heather - no summit push, lol. it is an orienteering event, lots of off trail hiking. this will be my 6th year, depending on how aggressive i get it will be 2000-4000 ft elevation gain over 5-7 miles in less that 3 hr and that was when i was in good shape, not so much now. i have till end of march to prep. sounds like your doing great and putting up some really good numbers, listen to the body

if your in the east stay safe from the storms

Wow so far this year has really gotten away from me! Sounds like everyone is doing well and keeping active! I have actually been slacking a bit these last 2 weeks and plan on getting back on a good schedule next week and hitting my 5 miles or more each day. I love have the FitBit Surge as it does keep me focused on the goal-I get bummed now when I see I have not even gone 3 miles all day.

Anyone have a 5K, 10K or 1/2 marathon planned? I think I will research some 5K's coming in the spring and sign up now so I can hold myself accountable and be ready. I don't really run though I'm a walker but I love to hike and climb.

Take care all and if any of you are in the path of that big storm, stay warm!

Good morning all!

It's still cold and windy, so I opted to stay in bed this morning. But I'm not sweating it. I think that once I get settled into my new routine it will be easier for me to get a morning run in. If I say this more than a week or two from now, kick me with the pointy boot.

Gotta jet - Philly is supposed to get a LOT of snow this weekend, which means parking is generally pretty crazy. I found a great parking spot last night. So instead of giving that up, I'm leaving my car and taking the bus to work.

Have a great Friday, Rookies!

Hey everyone!

Today was another win for me. Hit the gym at 1ish...ended up signing up for some personal training...more and more excuses keep disappearing for me!! My bod is sore, but I know it is because my muscles have been wasting over the past 4 years. Tomorrow I am doing a 15k hike.

Heather, you are ROCKING this sweetie!! i'm so proud of you:-)

Gotta fly,

Sheesh, go away for a week and you all blow up the board!

Trish - You're the master of the pointy boot! Remember the hardest part for runners is the first step out the door. Once you do it, you'll never regret it, but you will regret not doing it. But you know that, which is why you’re fitting it in at the rink! I kinda think you've got this. ;)

Carrie - I still sometimes have a hard time being out of the classroom. Especially when the 4th graders come to the district office to sing Christmas carols. In that moment, I think about how much I miss them… then I remember that I don't miss the drama coming back to class after recess. So glad you're loving the new job!

Nera - My fitbit does the same thing. The way it's logging my sleep makes me think I need a sleep study!

Kirsten - Glad you finally get some time off. I forget what line of work you're in and what you're studying for. Glad kitty is okay. That was scary!

Anne - Long time no see! Glad to hear you're happy, healthy and still running! You’ve always been a supermom! But inquiring minds want to know what healing you're needing.

Skirnir - Welcome to our little group! I'm doing the walking thing myself, for now. I’m nursing an injury, but also trying really hard not to run until I drop another stone so I stave off the hungries. Congratulations on your time goal. Whatever carrot works is the one we use!

Doris - Thanks for sharing your routine! I have been adding a wee bit of yoga to the routine on the same day that I do strength training, but I like your plan better. I always need a bit of relief after a run, and I think that would do it. By the way, my dentist has the following sign in her office: “My dentist told me I needed a crown, and I was like, I KNOW, RIGHT?” Sounds like your hubby needs to be grounded though.

Bobby - Where will your "serious" hiking take place? Sounds like a summit push to me!

Rich - YAY! You're back! It's great to see you. Welcome to the 'starting over' crew. Several of us are in the same boat, but we also know how to support each other and lift us all up! Congratulations on your small victories so far!

Sorry I was away for a week. I was SUPER busy putting together a training and picking up some slack for a colleague who was at a professional conference. Everything went well, but now I have a lot to cross off my to do list at work.

I've been trying to get out for a daily 2-miler. So far I'm averaging three lunch walks per week. I'm 30 days in and have lost 10 inches and 12 pounds. I'm trying to stay optimistic and not let the gremlins get into my head and tell me how much harder it's going to be in my 40's than it was in my 30's. I've been really happy about my diet, and lack of sugar cravings. I think this is owing to the fact that I am FORCING myself not to run. 1. so I don't re-injure the hip 2. so I can focus on improving my walking pace and 3. to keep my ravenous carb monster in check. Not sure how long I plan to do this, but I've decided not to give myself a deadline, and just let my body tell me what it wants/needs.

Off to bed. Puppies are way to warm and soft to ignore.

Hey all,
Had a great day today. Did some work, then headed to my new gym to fill out some paperwork. Picked up kidlets, and sent them off to ringette. Managed a 1hr, 45 min workout of a bunch of weights and bootcamp style workout, along with biking and eliptical...all good:-)

Nera, love your sense of humour!!! Very cool you gave your friends good info!! BTW, I have a pick up notice at the Mail centre...will keep you posted:-)

Oh Kirsten, holy that would have given me a start!! At least you heard your cat! Reminds me of 5 years ago when JoJo got out. I heard the scratching early in the AM, Rosie finally woke me up around 3ish...now I see where she tried to get into every door...

BobbyD, you rock my friend!! Let's keep on keepin on ok? Loveyou!!

Doris, ice injuries and fish fry in the same post seems too funny!! Hope she is doing ok, and that you guys had a blast tonight!

Rich, you got out there, did it, and included your family!! It is a super win day as far as I can see!!

Carrie YAYYYYYYYYY!!!!! Love how happy you are:)

Tomorrow I am doing another couple of hours at the gym. Having a program set-up session (the gym i am at insists)...could be interesting!! Going to measure myself tomorrow as well to track progress.

Hugs and love,
Trish

Hi all!

Quick check-in before I head off to bed. So far I love my new job. I don't remember the last time I've been this happy to go to work.

Hoping to get a run in tomorrow - it's been so cold and windy the last few days that I couldn't bear to get out there.

Night, Rookies!

Well today nothing yet but good healthy eating. Yesterday I did a 15 min super slow jog with Bonnie. Went to the gym and walked an hour on the TM - Boring I know, but I did throw some running intervals in there too. 4 of them each about 3 minutes.
The legs are sore sore sore. Running with all the excess weight I am currently carrying is not too enjoyable. Early days at getting back to it. That's ok. Seeing some little results on the scale which is nice. Soon I hope to notice some results in loose clothing :)

So, we have had to turn on the heat the last few nights. It's been in the upper 50s. I know that isn't really cold but for here, it is!
DD fell on the ice last Saturday, after falling a week before that on other ice. She has wrenched her knee and ankle again.....I think she may have torn something in her knee and possibly broken her ankle. She is too darned stubborn so won't go the doctor here. She wants to wait until she is home. Kids. Sheesh. My tooth is fixed, no worries and at a reasonable price!
Tonight, off to a fish fry/Bon fire on the beach. Could be fun...

Life is fragile. Love, laugh and enjoy.

Rich- Welcome back! Sounds like my story and I am the same place to. Now I am trying to reinvent myself again, I look forward to seeing more of your inspiration around here.

Trish - Busy, you, never, LOL. Let us know how the gym goes.

Nera - those exercise will do wonders for the abs, trust me they are in there some place, at least i hope mine are... as for the pee pad... well i hear about that when anne sneezes lol

Kirste - the poor kitty, i guess you need to do a head count before bed. however i would have loved to been a fly on the wall when you were at that door.

yesterday was 12 min of spinning then 5 min on the stair climber

today was 25 min spinning for 6 miles

that is 3 days in a row of cardio, it is a start but i have a long way to go. like i said 7 yrs ago when i first started "baby steps"

rock on rookies

Well, Nera, you're becoming the Ab-rehab/PF specialist around here, aren't you? Enjoy your quiet house. I love those times. Pelvic floor issues are a LOT more common than people realize.

Richard! So nice to 'see' you again. Have you been running much these days?

Trish, I'm not surprised to hear your schedule is full. I don't know how you do it, but you make it sound doable!

So, sad and happy story: Last night, around midnight, I started hearing an occasional rattle at my front door. Then scratching. Then the door shaking. I can't see the doorway/porch without actually going to the door, but it seemed to me that someone was trying to get into my house - and it continued for several minutes. I couldn't decide if I should approach the door with a baseball bat or my phone. So finally, bringing both, I crept slowly up to the door and peeked out the side window...

Suddenly there was a loud scratching noise travelling UP the door and a FACE appeared right in front of my nose! I jumped, screamed and then laughed!

It was my CAT.

She must have slipped out with my husband an hour before and was desperately trying to get back into the house. It was extremely cold last night and she's an indoor kitty. She's very lucky she didn't hurt her ears or toes. I was soooooooooo sad for her and so glad that I stayed up late last night. I nearly went to bed at the same time as my hubby had. I shudder to think...

Had pt appt this morning. Now just having nice long breakfast before I go in to work. I have the house to myself and am really enjoying it. I may be a bit later for work than I planned because I don't get this very often. LOL!!!

I did get some new exercises to do. Inner and outer thigh muscle ones and one that is suppose to work my lower abdominal which she couldn't feel me move so guess that one is a little weak. I made her laugh when she said lets work those abdominal muscles and I said I don't have any under all this tissue. She said yes you do. But you couldn't prove it by the one exercise I did. I had to try it three different ways before she could feel it move. LOL!!!!!

I had lunch over the weekend with friends I have known for ages and one woman said well my period isn't the issue I have to wear a pee pad all the time what do you guys do. I said get in to your doctor and get a referal to a pt who specializes in this. Well then they had to know all the details. Finally one of them said this is all just going back to our toddler years. LOL!!!!!

Hi everyone.
It's been quite sometime. But here I am needing to hit the spark again.
A couple of years of hard times and bad eating and minimal activity and I am back where I started.

So nice to see you Bobby. I would LOVE to take it easy. Unfortunately I got a call at 8pm tonight for an 11pm shift. Overnight. No nap. And, I was already at work at 6 this morning. sigh. What's on March 20th? Climbing??? I sure would love to run again soon too. Fingers crossed for us both.

Trish, your kiddos are amazing! Must have something to do with their mommy.

So, back at work for the night, like I mentioned. It's a good chance to catch up on studying but it's going to make a workout tomorrow pretty rough. I got about 2 1/2 miles in on the treadmill today, with a tiny bit of running. (shhh, don't tell my doctor!)

I hope you all had a lovely Monday!

Hey beautiful people!

Today was good, Monkey lost his game by 1, and Missy tied hers. Miss reffed her first 2 games - it went well as soon as she remembered she was the one that was supposed to blow the whistles:-)

Did a funky workout at the rink - power walk 1 lap (1/5 km), then do 3 laps doing stairs while walking (8 sets of 20 stairs up and down), then another bunch of walking and another 4-5 laps of stairs...my butt is SORE!! LOL, all good

Gotta fly, Monkey is having a hard time with his homework tonight...

Hugs,
Trish

Just a quick hello here too...

I had put a basketball on my christmas wish list this year, and it was received from a family member. My son, 18 years old, and I went and shot some hoops. We both do not have a basketball career, but it was fun. There are not many things a mom can do with her 18 year old son, that doesn't make him pout or you have to force him to do. So we will have to see if this is a one time fun activity, or maybe something we can do a bit more often. And I have to admit, it is good exercise for me, as I do run a bit, jump a fair amount and some walking. Just looking for things I can do exercise wise that isn't alone, as my family does not join me for walks, but sometimes to the gym, and now maybe to the basketball court.

Howdy all!

Just a drive-by tonight. I'm a bit beat up from the back-to-back-to-back shifts, but I got 32 hours in two days, so I can pretty much take the rest of the week off now - lol! Nice to have the work out of the way so I can study.

Carrie, I'm glad you're feeling better. Trish, how are you doing, Chicka? You 'sound' a bit less motivated lately. Weather? Post-Christmas??? Nera, your fitbit has the same sense of humour as you, doesn't it? Anne, healing your insides? You ok darlin'? And yes, walking is awesome! Definitely! Ummm... that's all I can remember right now.

Back on the wagon tomorrow with the Spark 30-day challenge, walking on the dreadmill (dreaming that it's a beach in the Bahamas - spotty internet or no!) and studying. Just two more shifts scheduled this week - a 4-hour and a 6. Lots of time to get some serious work done. (don't procrastinate don't procrastinate don't procrastinate....)

Happy Monday everyone.

Hi all!

Kirsten - I'm not planning to do any private music teaching. I'll sing with my church choir and enjoy my "adult" music.

I had a fun weekend celebrating with some friends, but it's time to get back to it. I ran this morning after taking almost two weeks off to heal a sinus infection. It sure was easy for me to get out of "running mode." I will have to be disciplined so I can get the routine back.

We got our first snow today! I almost forgot what it looked like! The city is so pretty when it snows. It covers up the grime and makes it almost look clean!

Hope you all had a great day!

First, let me say that Internet in the Bahams is sketchy at best! I read everyone's comments: welcome to new people, pointy boots are needed, kids are running Mon all over, etc
Heather. My schedule: Monday and Wedensday 30 minut Es strength training. Tuesday, am run, no more than 5K, just a pace I could maintain. Tuesday evening, one hour yoga (not bikram). Thursday, running about the same as Tuesday. Hour yoga at night. Friday, nada unless I was feeling fabulous, then a 30 minute strength class. Saturday, more like every other Sat. A long, slow run. Sunday rest. So, I had one or two rest days every week, strength and yoga twice and run 2-3 times. I found that I increased myself speed by almost a minute per mile in the first two months of this. Better yet, no real pain anywhere, not even my feet! The yoga class, in my opinion, made the biggest difference in being able to run pain free. No ITB issues, no calf issues, no hamstring issues. If I wanted to prepare for a race of 5 or even 10K, I don't think I would change a thing. For a longer race, I would slowly increase each run by no more than 10% each week. So, to get ready for a half, I would probably start prepping 10-12 weeks in advance. For a full, maybe another 4 weeks over the half prep.

My daughter arrived for a visit last night. Today, in the rain, she did her homework for the week (grad school, MBA). Now, we get to play:). Well, after I see a dentist to fix the tooth that lost its crown today.......

Life is fragile. Love, laugh and enjoy.

I did two half marathons walking completely, except maybe a tiny bit of running/jogging at the finish line and now I want to do a half marathon in less than 3 hours and that seems to need at least some running. My longer distances I was doing a much shorter run time interval, but haven't been doing that of late, with the working. Only working about 20 hours a week, but that does make it harder to do the long runs with the cooking dinners, etc.

SKirner!!! welcome! and 9 min run with walking is AMAZING! do not let that deter you. MANY people do a 4-5 min run/30sec-1 min walk... throughout their entire run (including full marathons) Check out Galloway Method. Serioulsy- it's supposed to really help cut down on injuries AND you keep up a great pace b/c you get that break every set number of minutes. I've been doing a 3-4 min run/1 min walk the past couple of months and I LOVe it! I didn't always do that, only took walk breaks as necessary and short as possible. But, NOW... I'm healing the insides of me and appreciate any running that I can do. Plus, I want to run til I die of old age so if that means a run/walk... so be it.
Hope ya'll are having a great weekend. I walked a chilly and quick 2 miles with my daughter (she's home for the weekend) this a.m for my leg stretching. (After sitting around with coffee, feeding chickens/gathering eggs,etc...etc.. ) LOL! emoticon

Nera: ah yeah. Tea does make me pee a lot. Which is why I can not have a cup late at night, as I normally get up at night, but after tea, many more times. Interesting on the fitbit charge. If and when I break my currently fitbit, I may consider an upgrade. :)

I have the fitbit charge that has the heart rate monitor. I turned the monitor off because it was draining the battery and I had to charge it every two days. Now it goes a week between chargings. It works fine except for logging sleep episodes when I am just sitting on the couch and saying I walked up a flight of stairs when I didn't. LOL!!!

The doctor wants me to cut back tea because of an incontinence issue I am trying to get resolved. She says caffeinine is an irritant that can contribute to the problem. I now only have one big mug a day and sometimes I skip it. But I really like drinking it too. Especially today as it is zero degrees out and I think that is going to be our high for the day.

SKIRNIR, we posted at the same time! Welcome!!!

Great job getting the running intervals up to 9! Slow and steady is how you get there. It takes more energy to run until you're in the swing of it, and for some of us (***hand waves wildly in the air!*) it takes what feels like forever. But stick with it, you'll get there.

Nera, a sleep event? that's TOOOO funny!

Ann, it's so nice to see you. I had to laugh at your 'first thing' (after feeding chickens and bunny and....) comment. What a mom you are! ST.

Carrie, it must be so hard to say goodbye to teaching. Maybe the martini glass will figure in to the picture later, who knows. I hope your last day was fun and that your new adventure is even better. Are you going to do any music teaching outside of school? Community choir or band, that sort of thing?

I've picked up a couple of nights to go with my afternoon shifts this weekend, so I won't see ya till Monday likely. Let's call this a study break too and a slight exercise hiatus as well, shall we? I have a VERY hard time fitting in exercise on days when I only get a 2 hour nap and a 3 hour nap over 24. I'll try lifting the clients a few extra times and call it

Cheerio Rookies!!

Doris: Neat on living on a boat. I would love to do something interesting when my hubby retires, but as he hates to travel, I doubt it will ever happen. I keep saying I need to learn to travel by myself a bit more.

Nera: Why do you need to give up/cut down on tea consumption? I need my tea! That sounded like a fun evening/dance. What kind of fitbit do you have? My hubby is half trying to talk me into replacing my fitbit one with one that has the heart rate capability. Do you like yours? Does it work well?

Yes, I am a newbie and tried to read back through the post. I am a walker who has been trying to add in some running for a few years now, but also have exercise enduced asthma. Couch to 5K moved way too fast for me. So far I am up to 9 minutes running 3 minutes walking for 4.44 miles. Thing is my 8 minutes running 3 minutes walking 4.44 miles was faster and I it just doesn't seem to get any easier. Now, of course part of that is I am working a bit more, and only running about once a week.

Going to be cold again here this weekend. I have hit 5K steps a couple of days this week. Still not as consistent and I would like but moving at least. When your fitbit records a sleep event when you know you were just sitting on the couch watching tv you realize you might have issues. LOL!!!

Carrie- yuck!!! I'm sorry you're sick. And I can almost understand your feelings... I've never been in that situation but I know you're a teacher at heart so I'm sure you'll miss the kids.
Kirstin!!!! you're still doing great with your walking and studying! I cannot imagine being in school or studying for boards with a family. KUDOS to you, my friend! (sometimes I dream of nursing school-I'd love to work in L and D.)
BobbyD- come on... just *walk* on the treadmill... 15 minutes. nothing major, just a walk. You got this!!! High 5 on the weight maintain-at our age, that is a victory in itself. :) Where's your lovely bride? does she stop in here at all? I'm enjoying dropping in here once in a while.
Trish- no beatups for the funk. But, I suggest what I did for Bobby-just 'start'... ya'll know that is what we usually need. The first few steps. emoticon , Sis!

I've been doing really well tracking food. AND staying in my ranges. Today I headed out for a first thing in the a.m . run (after washing dishes and feeding the chickens and bunny)I was shooting for approx. 4 miles and ended up doing 5!!! I haven't run that far in a LONG while! I'm planning on just holding there for the next few weeks before adding more miles. My adrenals are healing (according to how I feel and sleep and my latest blood work) so I am excited !
Do your best this weekend, TEam!!! DON'T let the weekend be your slide off the wagon of healthy eating! Enjoy moderate *fun* stuff and move your body some!!!! See ya'll next week!

Gooooooood morning, Rookies!

Carrie, I sure hope you're feeling better today. Sinus infection? Yuck!

I hope everybody is staying active this week; I could use some inspiration. I'm doing okay with studying and walking, but only getting about 30 minutes a day, not 60 like I expected. Just too many distractions. Things take too long to do! lol!

My hubby is still at home all the time, which REALLY cuts into my concentration. Blargh. Today he's planning to start painting the main floor of the house, which is where I study. So, I think I'll head to the library today. Have a great Friday everyone!

Good morning all!

Feeling a little strange about today, being my last day of teaching. It's weird to think that I won't be a "teacher" anymore, in the public education sense of the word.

Good morning all!

Kirsten - I was at the doc yesterday and got some meds for a sinus infection. It totally got me - I was up all night last night (again!) and I am taking another sick day today. I need to make sure I'm 100% for my new job!

Hopefully I can kick this before the weekend...

Have a great day, Rookies!

Hey all,

Today I did absolutely nothing, wish I could say that I managed to eek out a decent one, but heck, somedays this happens. Tomorrow I hope I can get myself out of the funk.

Doris, I'd love to hear more about your weekly routine. How yoga and ST fits in. When I was training for my marathon my week looked like...

S long run
MW xtrain and weights
TTh running
F rest
S xtrain and weights

Would you go yoga with weights or alternate the two activities with cross training cardio?

We have about the same temps as you, Nera. Tonight we have wind gusting about 30 mph to go with our nearly 14 inches of new snow as well. Fun times. I think I'd rather hear about your weather, Doris. Great tip about the ST. I'll keep that in mind as well.

Got through day 2 of studying/walking pretty well. Only 1 mile today but I also did yoga and shovelled snow. Nearly finished studying maternity (the subject I had exactly NO exposure to in nursing school - so, I'd say my weakest). Tomorrow I'll finish that and move on to Pediatrics!

Carrie, that cold really got you, huh? Sorry to hear that! I had a bad one for all of three days and then - poof - gone. Not complaining! Be well all.

Bobby? How's your week going? (she says, hunting for the other pointy boot...) Got to keep my buds on track...

HI team! I read back and it seems like everyone has been busy...new jobs, shakin' it off, watching football games, etc.
I have come to the realization that running on the DM stinks even in the Bahamas! There are no sidewalks and it certainly isn't safe to run on the road as there are no shoulders and they drive on the "wrong" side of the road.....Yikes! I might attempt to run on the beach tomorrow. We shall see.
Heather, I discovered that if I do strength training twice a week (30 minutes long) and yoga 2x a week, I run mostly pain free:). My ITB doesn't hurt, my lower back doesn't hurt, etc. That's just my 2 cents worth:)

Happy mid-week all.

Life is fragile. Love, laugh and enjoy.

Good morning all!

I think I feel worse today than I have all week. If I feel this bad tomorrow I'm taking a day off.

Four more days...

Nera, OMG! Seriously? Death threats? Wow. I feel bad for the Vikings. That was a hard way to lose a game, but you're right. It is just a game.

I managed 2 miles at lunch today with no pain, so I think my stretching/strength routine helped my hip. Thank Maude!

Hiya gang. Wow, Nera, you wild child you! Congrats on the win and I hope you're feeling ok now. And, yeah, go um team!! (can you tell I don't follow sports? lol!)

Day two of study boot camp went well. I got through a good bit of material and two miles' walking on the dreadmill. I'm not allowed to run till we're sure my ear implant isn't going to slip again, so walking it is. I'm watching review videos while I walk and it gets me off my chair so, win-win.

We've had a huge blast of winter here. Buses cancelled, roads were a mess. I actually put my poor frozen car in a heated garage at the shopping centre downtown for an hour today just so I could open all the doors and windows again.

Happy Monday, right?

I can only repeat what I have heard but supposedly the kicker has kicked the laces side of the ball and made field goals before. It stinks but in the end it is a game so let's stop threatening the poor kicker's(and holder's) life. Yes that is happening here. We didn't get spanked like the last time we played Seattle and we will probably have a new kicker next year. So move on people.

Well, I don't know who will be smarting worse after that last play, the kicker or the holder. He should have had laces out.

As I watched Richard Sherman collapse onto his knees on the field when it clicked the Seahawks made it to the next game, I couldn't help but think he must have just had a huge adrenaline crash. I remember that on my marathon day.

That was some luck.

Well the Vikings made a good effort but our kicker let us down again. I watched very little of the game just can't take the stress. I was quilting while watching the PBR in Chicago for the first event of the season.

I probably won't watch much. I can't stand the stress of waiting to see if the good Vikings or the incompetent ones show up. LOL!!! But I do know both teams will be very cold. LOL!!!

Trish - Enjoy Vancouver! I love it there! Especially the sea wall. One of these days I'm going to get up the coast a bit. I hear there are breathtaking views.

Carrie - Rest day good. We all need rest day!

Nera - That was hilarious! "I meant to do that!" LOL!

My hip is touchy this morning, but I will do some dynamic stretching to warm it up and then switch to static stretches my PT showed me. I think it might be time to add back some strength training and/or yoga. My weak muscles keep making the walking/running tricksy.

Watching my Hawks take on the Vikings today. Nera and I will be pitted against each other for a few hours. But the rookie team wins either way. Go HAWKS!

Good morning. Recovering from company Xmas party friday night. Not from drinking though. The entertainment was doing a lip sync battle. My department put together a little group and did Shake It off by Taylor Swift. I really didn't want to do it but everyone else was bailing out so I said sure but I am not lip syncing. I will be the background dancer. If you have ever seen the video Taylor Swift does some awkward dancing with a scarf at one point. So I bought a big scarf got up on stage took a big breath and proceeded to be the worst and most awkward background dancer ever. LOL!!! I had to make sure people realized it was a gag so I was pretty exagerated. I didn't want anyone thinking oh that poor woman she thinks she can dance. I tripped myself at one point and ended up on my butt. That was a big hit. Problem was I didn't pace myself and started out way to fast so I was really hurting by the time the song ended. I had breathed so hard and got so hot I had irritated my sinus and bronchial passages. Yesterday I thought it was going to lead to a cold but today I am much better. My hubby didn't go so I have no video of the event. Couple of coworkers said they did but they haven't sent it yet. I have no idea really what I did or the what the three people in front of me did. I would do something and the crowd would laugh so I would do it again. I was trying not to fall off the little makeshift stage or crash through it. I did a few leaps and no one would ever say I land gazelle like. LOL!!! Plus towards the end there was real oxygen deprivation going on. I work with some respitory therapists so there was some professional concern going on. LOL!!! There is one still picture of it on my facebook page. Plus I forgot to put my fitbit on that day so I missed logging all of that and I am sure I would have pegged our the heart rate monitor. LOL!!! Really though one of the most fun evenings I have ever had. Made more so by the fact that no believes I did that stone cold sober. I think my boss now realizes I have some hidden depths. LOL!!!

Oh and best part my group won. And from the comments I heard because of me and my scarf. So very happy as the prize was $50 gift card for each of us. And my Christmas gift for the night turned out to be two tickets to a Minnesota Wild game(hockey). So my son and I are going to go to a hockey game together.

Good morning all!

Trish - I'm so excited too. :) I already feel more like myself again.

I thought I'd get out for a run this morning, but a) it's raining (ugh) and b) this cold is not helping. I think today needs to be a *total* rest day. I told myself that yesterday was a rest day, but I still took down my tree, ran a bunch of errands, and cleaned the apartment. So much for rest. I think the rainy day will put me in the perfect mood to throw on some jammies and kick this cold to the curb.

Have a great day, Rookies!

Hey all,
MIssy's team ended the round robin in second, and will be playing the only team that beat them in the first round of the playoffs tomorrow. Should be an interesting one for sure:-)

Josh will be coming back over from the Island to stay with us in Vancouver for tomorrow night. Not because we have to, but because I want to:)

Carrie, AMAZING news hon, sounds like this is the job that was ordered specifically for you!! So excited!!

Heather......boo, I hope it feels better in the AM!!!

Hugs,
Trish

Hubby and I ran around all day shopping and did a lot of walking. The good news is I got my steps in. The bad news is my hip flexor is acting up again. I'm scared it's going to derail me. I have to rehab it again and see if I did any lasting damage. :(

Calories are still good, so that's happening.
