I'm not really ready to wear the "runner" label because I only do it for bling, but when I'm standing at the starting line wearing running clothes with my number pinned on in a sea of other runners, I sure feel like a runner. If I ever start running around the neighborhood for fun THEN I think I'll consider myself a runner. :-)
Maybe I should start my own group???

I am just about approaching this point.......... and the feeling has crystallized ever since I started running a regular, timed, 5k, with Park Run on a Saturday morning. That is the only time I am with a real-life running 'tribe' - really serious runners who I can identify with. Standing with that group on a Saturday morning, I feel like a runner!

When I spent more time running than walking in a workout. And by "running" I mean that at any given moment, both feet might be off the ground. At 3.7 mph, I run slower than most people walk. So be it. I'm still faster than everyone sitting on the sofa.

15 months after I did my first walk 5K in Nov, 2011, I did the 2012 St Petersburg Rock n Roll Half Marathon! That was 3 months before I turned 62! Coming down the finish chute and crossing the finish line was pure euphoria! Never in my dreams did I ever think I would be a runner, much less finish a Half Marathon. I remember saying to myself, "I did it! I am a runner!" I'll never forget that day.

That was a hard one for me too. I was hesitant to give myself the runner label as it felt like I was walking way too much. What I have learned over the years, is that I was a runner the moment I made a conscious decision to get out there and make it happen.

Congrats on getting it done! You are doing so well:-)

Hugs,
Trish

I think when I started training for my first 5K. I may still walk a lot more than I run, but I know that in the long run (no pun intended) I'm going to be running and it's what I want to do.

There was this morning the first winter after I started running. It was pitch black and like 20 degrees outside with monster winds. It was so cold that the tears froze to my eyelashes. I ran in it anyway. That's when I knew I could call myself a runner. That kind of commitment doesn't come easy!

When I found myself doing my intervals in the pouring rain dressed in my running togs -- tee shirt and shorts -- every Tuesday and Thursday and once on the weekend.

Just wondering at what point you started referring to yourself as a runner or going for a run instead of a walk.

I'm enjoying the running I do but have a hard time calling myself a runner or saying I went for a run, I always feel the need to say run/walk bc while I do 4-5 miles usually, on any given day half of that may be walking depending on how I'm feeling.
