I think both of you hit what I was missing, that sense of connection to other racers. I do think a virtual 5K where I was reporting back to a group of people or somehow sharing the experience would be better than what I did, which was basically "send us the money for the medal and promise to run 5K in return". I did do the run, but it was pretty unfulfilling. If I do it again I like the idea of getting some SparkPeople to commit with me.
Here in Phoenix our "indoor-running season" is backwards; we run in the winter and hole up in the summer when it's 110 degrees. I should pair up with someone in the southern hemisphere!

I prefer to run actual races, but every once in a while there is a cool medal that I like or it is for a good cause then I will sign up for a virtual run. I just did a virtual 4 miler this Sunday and I met up and ran with a friend who was also doing the run.

I like to use a virtual race as an intro into warm weather. After my outdoor running has slowed or stopped due to cold weather I like to sign up for a virtual race to see where I am physically/mentally. Also, I am located in an area where I usually have to drive an hour plus to get to some of the "local" 5k races. If I'm in the mood for a race and nothing is close by I invite friends at SparkPeople to race on a agreed upon day and follow-up via message boards or posting on a SparkTeam's team wall. And to make my particular race interesting I plot the course on the Fitness Maps www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness

in an area I don't tend to frequent so it's new and challenging like a race should be.

I may not have gone where I INTENDED to go, but I think I've ended up where I NEEDED to be.

Have you/would you do a virtual race? After I got hooked on the "bling" from my first 5K I signed up for a couple more, but I also signed up for a virtual 5K so I could earn a particular medal I really liked. I found the virtual race to be disappointing at best; it felt pretty much like any other workout. I really missed the camaraderie of the real races.
Have you tried it? What's your opinion?
