follow the tips provided and when it gets hard...embrace the day when your knees and ankles DON'T hurt when you get up. Man, I sure did. didn't even notice at first then I was like "wait, they don't hurt!!!"

My first stop was my family doc to make sure I was medically cleared to go. Then I started a walk/run program (could only run for about 50 metres or so at a time at first, then walked for a couple of minutes and repeated for up to 30 minutes). I did notice joint pain in the beginning, and water jogged a lot of the time to alleviate the stress. Just getting outside will raise your spirits, congrats on taking this step.

Do make sure you have good shoes, I always get mine at a specialty running shop. Once you get sneaks that work, you can usually get them cheaper on-line.

Two ways I started walking / jogging was 1) in a swimming pool, 2) on a mini trampoline. Both of these options alleviate stress on joints. Also, be sure to invest in good shoes.
Your local running shop can assist.

I may not have gone where I INTENDED to go, but I think I've ended up where I NEEDED to be.

Hi all-

I'm a very new runner and very overweight. I currently weigh about 260 lbs and would like to start running for fun and fitness. However, I have noticed that walking around, walking up and down stairs alone makes my ankles and knees hurt. Any suggestions to avoid these things as I don't want to give myself a "way out" of this activity.
