When I started out running several months ago I was around 230 and I felt awkward. I was slow. Slow as Christmas. I am fortunate though because I live in a community where people run, bike, and stay active. One day I was running and I had just started hitting five miles. Now that five miles took me 1:47 minutes to complete back then but on my way back, another runner who obviously was a pro at running said Good Job! You are doing great and you are almost to your destination. That was the first time I realize I was a runner. It doesn't matter the pace or the distance! What matters is that you got out there and did it. It doesn't matter how much you weigh either. Today I can run five miles in an hour and three minutes. I have lost 69 pounds and have 55 more to go. But those first weeks are what started it and even though I was slow as Christmas and weighed more than I have ever weighed, I still got out there and did it. That is what counts. So it doesn't matter what you weigh, how fast you are, or how far you go. What matters it that you are out there doing it and trying your best!

No goal or distance is too small. What matters is that you started, you are doing it, and you will conquer that goal and distance in the future!

Nice read. Thanks for sharing and to all those who keep it alive by adding their comments

I struggle with running in public like the rest. I'm nowhere near my goal weight. I'm getting over it.

This brought me to tears. Thank you for sharing it. I have been worried about doing the 5k - running in public. Now, I feel a lot more confident. Thank you!

That's awesome!!!

And why wouldn't you be able to pace a group, if that's something you want to do? Once you get comfortable with the distance, you could pace the ones who doubt, who don't know if they should even be out there.

Wow. Just, wow.
That literally brought me to tears. I am that runner, the one who doesn't think she should be allowed to call herself a runner, the one who can barely finish a 5K and who does it in pitifully slow time. I'm the one who's embarrassed to tell my friends how long it took me to run/walk those short three miles.
Not anymore.
I. Am. A. Runner.
I know I'll never pace a group--I don't even want that. But I will run my races with dignity and I will hold my head high when I shuffle across the finish line to collect my finisher's medal, my water and my banana. Because...
I. Am. A. Runner.

Thank you for sharing! Being 80 pounds overweight, short, 52, and a beginner, I feel like I'm a source of amusement rather than inspiraiton.

What a great article! Thank you so much for sharing.

I'm part of a beginning runner group and have shared it with our "Coach" so that everyone can hear its message. You've absolutely passed along smiles and motivation today. Thanks again.
