Ooo, I'm definitely going to try the applesauce one! This is a perfect day - hanging out with friends later & I always bring treats. I'll have to add some applesauce in. ;)

I loved baking but now that I'm the only one in the house I don't do it any more.

To be totally honest I have not tried any of these baking (lighter) suggestions; however, after reading this article I most certainly will... I will not be baking anytime soon it has simply been way too warm for baking but I love many of the ideas. Especially the applesauce one. What a great way to cut some unnecessary calories from your daily intake.

I love to bake and cook... and when I am at home all the time I do much better. I have always substituted FF milk and egg whites for eggs in a lot of recipes- the problem is you need to know which recipes to make which adaptations. you can't just start doing all of these at once- you find a flavor that your family can live with- for example I am not much of a baked banana, but we can do the pumpkin without seeing much taste change in some recipes.

many times if I can just adjust the fat in the recipe it comes out fine- and I often help my diabetic husband by using artificial sweetener and use sugar as a spice which takes away the after taste and doesn't send his blood sugar sky rocketing. Diabetics need some fat to delay the absorption of sugar in the blood. I have felt like the kitchen chemist sometimes, but with practice it has been a good skill to develop and I think has helped us eat healthier.

We do a lot of crisps with plain fruit in the baking dish and an oatmeal, 1.5 tablespoon of butter, some splenda brown sugar which is blended brown sugar and splenda brown sugar, and cinnamon-nutmeg-allspice mixture over top- my husband loves this and asks for the cherries (1-2 bags of frozen cherries depending on the amount of people) I made this for my non diabetic family and they ate it all up and were delighted that it was not full of sugar- said they could taste the fruit better.

I have not baked much in a long while. But, when I do I use several of the suggestions to help make it a little healthier. Hope everyone has a great 4th tomorrow.

Thanks for the article. I don't do much baking but when we make a cake we use applesauce in place of the oil. I stay away from oil and butter.

The link below is my lifesaver! Using the "light" baking suggestions, I can have my cake and eat it too. Read the article, and choose one strategy to try. My favorite is using applesauce in place of flour. I use that trick for cakes, cookies, muffins, and breads. Good luck!
