Sweetie you are not alone. I have been licensed to teach zumba for over a year and I have seen it all. I teach basic, zumbatomics, aqua, toning and son gold but what I tell everyone is that to most of us this all is so foreign. For most of us the music itself is new, our body doesn't "know" how to move like that. It's all so new so if you can't get a step, you know what, smile and laugh and march it out, shake your shaker! It will come and hats off if you have an instructor who breaks it down for about 15 minues before class begins. It's a huge advantage.

It can take time to get used to the routines but if you stick with it, it does get easier, and it is so much fun you don't feel like you are working out!

Yes, everyone feels like that.

Relax and enjoy it - you will get it. Some moves will always be easier and some will be more like " Are you kidding me? I don't move like that"

But stick with it, you will amaze yourself.

Goals -

Get rid of 30 pounds
10 pounds gone - Buy a bikini - DONE!
20 pounds gone - Buy slinky cocktail dress
30 pounds gone - Buy size 4 pants

Life's journey is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting, "Wow, What a Ride!!!"

Keep trying and watch your teacher's feet or try the DVDs until you learn the steps.

Never give up.

I tell my student's to toss their shame right out the window before each class. If you loose your step it's not worry at all, just shake your hips til you get it.

Zumba is ment to make you feel good while you work out. Slap a smile on your face and sing along to the tunes. Even when I take a class and I'm not 100% sure of a move I just keep moving. I've had times were I'm facing a totally different direction than the rest of the class! Chances are there are a few others in the room who are equally worried about the way they look/move, and the reality of it is is that no one really cares all that much because they're all having such a good time.
Treat it like a dance party. If you feel the need to stray from the moves that's fine, if your like my favorite Zumba parter, download the music and practice at home.
In a month you'll be a Zumba pro! I promise emoticon

It takes a while to learn the moves for me about 4 months so your not the only one. If you stick with it you will fall in love with it and you will see results.

Don't stress you are not the only one... I never realised I was so "unco" till trying this. It will all come together. I got my teenage sons onto it... now that is a chuckle to see the hips wiggle!

I feel the same way but the steps slowly fall into place and it's a great feeling when you start to get it. I also made my husband swear he would never walk in on me when I am doing zumba!

I lived a lot of years in Miami growing up and had many Hispanic friends who had parties where I'd do these dances. However, even with that experience, I found trying to follow along on the DVD much clunkier than following along in class. I don't know if it's because it's so slow and I'm a visual person?

You might find it easier to do the steps in a live class, too. Then there are some moves that will take a few times to get the gist of it. Remember though, the most important thing is to keep moving and to have fun. :)

It's true that in the beginning you feel very weird and uncoordinated...that lovely fish out of water thing. But like anything the more that you do it the mroe that you'll not only get used to it, but you'll it will be second nature.

Yeah I was hoping that I wasn't the only one. I have only tried it twice now. I bought the Zumba fitness for the Wii. I am going to be purchasing the DVD's though. I am hoping to lose weight and tone up by using this as one of my forms of exercise

You are not the only one, don't worry:) There are still probably 4 or 5 moves that I don't have down yet. It's going to take time. Keep trying; I learn to laugh at myself when I don't get it as supposed to getting mad and stopping the DVD:)

No you are not the only one!!!
OMG--I felt like such a dork the first few weeks/months!! I almost quit Zumba!! But now I'm so glad I stuck with it! I LOVE it now!! I've toned up, lost weight, and it's SO MUCH FUN!!! I love to work out now!! I also recently became certified to teach Zumba classes, and just started doing a Zumba in the Circuit class at Curves!!
SO----stick with it, don't get discouraged, "feel the music", and soon you'll be a pro!!
Do you do the videos? or take a class? both? If you're embarrassed in a class, try practicing the steps at home with Youtube videos, if you don't have the DVDs. If you have the DVDs--JUST DO THEM!!! LOL!!!
