I did the gym about 10 years ago, worked well because I was laid-off and had the time to go. But once I started working again, it became difficult and I lost all the effects of the gym, plus gained about 30lbs.

Now I use exercise videos online (exercisetv.tv,realage.com), from the library, a few of my own, and walk weather permitting. I am enjoying what I do.

I have been to gyms, but I'm still so self-conscious that working out at home using DVD's works best for me right now.

Like working out at home, but do a lot of outside walkking when weather permitts, also belong to a community pool and take a water aerobics class. Need to use my community center gym for weights and strenghth training and they even have an indoor track so I really have no excuse and I get a senior discount which makes my total membership to pool and gym $15.00 a year! so what am I waiting for? I hate to even go down the street in this cold! LOL!

I like working out at home. I also go for walks outside in the good weather. I use hand weights at home and a treadmill.

I have used various gyms and exercised at home. What works for me is home. I tend to work harder (noone is looking)and it is open 24/7...so no excuses. I also have 3 kids with Hubby working out of town so it's hard to fit in a gym.

I Own a Bowflex Ultimate, am a TurboJam junky (just ordered the new ChaLEAN Extreme), do P90X, and various other DVDs. I also subscribe to Oxygen Mag and find their workouts inspiring and gives me new ideas of how to mix it up a little.

This is what works for me.

Everyone is different. For myself, I go to Curves early in the morning, and when I get home from work & weekends use the gazelle. Just got Leslie Sansone's "Walk Away the Pounds" and love it! Also got a belly dance dvd - a great workout and fun!

emoticon I LOVE having a buddy or group but truthfully - financially I can't do a gym membership now, but I have and loved classes in the past.

Then I did Bootcamp outdoors for a few months this summer and it rocked!
Now I do workouts at home like 30 Day Shred, Billy Bootcamp, The Firm and walking/ jogging when weather permits.

I choose peace instead of this.

I work out with a friend. It works very well, as we are both early morning people and both consistent. I am very lucky to have her! We do boot camp workouts three days a week and walk the other two (week days.) The motivation is there, because we don't want to let the other person down!

I have a lot of DVDs at home that I work out to. I find that I stick to it better when I plan out what workouts I am going to do on what days that week. I mix cardio, strength trainin, abs,and Pilates so I have plenty to pick from.

I wish I could take a class, but I have to work out early, early, early and my gym does not offer classes in the early morning. Someone mentioned taking a Jazzercise class. I used to Jazzercise...I used to love Jazzercise. Maybe I need to see if there are any Jazzercise classes around town I could take...hhhmmm.

i tried once. its fun bcos you are not exercising alone but having 3 little kids at home make me difficult to go. not mentioning that my work place is quite far from home. now i have download some exercises and do it at home either before off to bed or early morning. the best part here, my kids also are with me.

oh wow, that sounds interesting. Let me know how you like Hip hop and belly dancing. They sound fun but I'm afraid my workout in there would consist of laughing at myself. I'm so uncoordinated. I've always wanted to try though. Let me know how it goes please.

Currently, I workout by myself in my school's gym. However, I am going to start the MWF aerobic classes along with my morning cardio and starting in January, I am either going to take a Saturday Belly Dance class or Hip Hop.

I like classes too. The hardest part for me is finding a few that are affordable, motivating, and challenging. I like to try new classes and change my mind between sessions a lot. Even if I'm new though I try to get to know the instructor or another person in my class so I feel accountable for showing up. Of course the best option is to sign up with a friend or family member if possible. Then you know you'll be going, enjoying yourself, and your workout doubles as social time. emoticon

I used to go to classes a lot and I loved it. I find I push harder at the class than I do at home. It's the same reason I prefer to exercise outside...Too easy to quit if I get tired at home. If I'm running, walking, or biking outside, I have to get home so there's no stopping after 30 mins.

I'd love to do classes, but not very convenient with my schedule. It's not a set certain days of the week schedule, so I'd miss out. I guess I could do several different kinds of classes. That would get some diversity in my workout anyway.

I can do this!!

I love to take classes it's easier to make yourself go, but where I live the classes are either in the afternoon or right at 5 pm. It's impossible to make them when you don't get off work until 5 and then have a 45-60 minute drive home depending upon traffic. No one ever has them at 7 or 8 pm, which is when I get to work out.
So I have several videos that I switch so that I don't get burned out or bored. You have to know yourself and what will make you get up off the sofa and just do it! I have a treadmill as well so when I watch TV I run on the treadmill. I also participate in sports several times a week.

I don't know about you, but I am more comfortable doing my exercise at home, if I have difficulty with something I can learn it in my own time and don't have to feel inadequate. There are some good exercise dvds in the store, my favorite are exercises on the ball, great if you have any back problems and have had good success with them.

I'd like to do more classes because I think I work harder, but the scheduling is tough. As it is, I do about 90 min 5-6 days/week on my own, and try for up to 5 yoga classes each week; haven't really found the classes for me yet.

I'm sure what works for each person is quite different. I know that I personally do much better in a class setting that on my own. If I know I have to be somewhere at a set time, I'm more likely to get my butt there than just a generic "get to the gym." Yes this could be changed by simply setting a strict schedule for my self-imposed gym time, but that is easier said than done :)
I guess overall what I'm trying to say is that if make the time for it (which is what is hardest for me!), be it by yourself or in a class, you have to stick to it for awhile to get it to become a habit.

I mostly work out on my own or sometimes with my husband. In the past, I've taken martial arts classes in a dojo and I really loved those. These days, with the price of gas and the economy and all, I'm working out mostly at home.

I exercise by myself. I work rotating shifts so it's difficult to fit an exercise class into my schedule ... I can make it at a certain time one week, but not the next week. I like the Leslie Sansone in home walking DVDs and have loaded up with them. I have a few other videos for strength training, but don't like them as much so don't do them as often.

I find both work for me, but it depends on the timing. I'm currently taking jazzercise classes and am having a blast. I find that in a class situation I push myself much more than I do at home. Also, if I don't feel like working out, once I'm there I get into it. I have had some success at home - treadmill, videos, etc. However, I don't yet have the self discipline to continue this for more than a month at at time. Working out at home definitely saves time (driving to/from gym or class, etc). If you need the support of the class, I would do the class; if not, developing a home routine may be best, or change up according to your needs (need more support, time issues, need push to meet goals, etc.)

I actually have done both. I actually go to the gym and I meet my best friend there. That actually helps me to get there. I think it is great to have to be held accountable, I would feel bad if I ditched her and didn't show up at the gym. Hope that helps. Also the classes are great because the instructors keep you motivated

I am trying to figure out where people have had more success, taking classes or exercising by themselves? I have signed up for classes and even when I have a lot of fun I have a hard time getting there every week. So what work's best for you? Do you have any tricks that get you to the gym to either take a class or just hop on the treadmill? Thanks!
