Most people will walk an extra 5-10 minutes per time the walk if they wear a pedometer. It also makes you want to go a little faster so you can fit more steps in if you only have a short break.

One of the teams I'm on set up a steps goal, so you can enter your steps in the goal tracker. You could set one up here, I suppose.

The best one I've found is the Omron-I think someone mentioned it, along with another brand that is similar. I really like it because it stores 7 days worth of steps (no more forgetting to write them down or counting 2 or 3 days together!), and it also calculates miles and aerobic steps. It also does calories burned. It doesn't count just any movement, so you can't shake it up and down to record extra steps, like some pedometers. You can also put it in a pocket or a purse and it will record steps, in addition to being able to wear it around your waist. It's pricier than some models-around $30 or so, depending on where you buy it-but I think it's worth it. And yes, I do find myself walking more, just to get the steps!

Lodrigue-I also got mine at walmart. I found that it wasn't recording all of my steps, so I had to try it in a different position each day. The instructions say to put it on the front of your belt or rim of the pants. For me it records best on the back of the pants. Of course, as with many things, you get what you pay for...If all else fails, maybe try to attach it to a shoe and double the number to get a more accurate count. Good luck!

I wear mine all the time. I started off with one from Walmart, and then KMart. I upgraded to a LifeFitness one similar to the Omron version. I found that the less expensive ones were calculating more steps than I actually walked. In addition, the one that I wear now has a feature that doesn't count the slightest movement. It stores so many moves until it starts to count it as steps. It kind of hard to explain, but no more fake steps from me hitting it with my arm. Also, I carry it in my purse of wear it around my neck when I am home in a night gown.

It's like my American Express Card...I do not leave home without it!

Interesting comment in that article:

"The bottom line is, everything works for a month," said Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatrician and obesity expert from the University of California at San Francisco. "Everything that's novel works, and as soon as it stops being novel, it doesn't work."

I've been "sparking" for well over a year, and it's STILL working. It's not novel anymore, but the healthy habits I'm learning here are staying with me!

I just bought one last night at KMart and put it on when I got home. I did 400 steps in 2 hrs. I never would have thought, I don't do that much between 9pm and 11pm, at least I thought I didn't. My goal is to do 10,000 steps per day.

I have an inexpensive one I got at Target. I'm suprised about how little I move when it's a "rest day" and I didn't go to the gym, and then surprised again on the days I went to the gym, and then had some errands to run or chores to do, and how much activity that can be.

Since it clips at the belt, I've found myself not wanting to wear a dress, since I can't clip it on!

I got the Go meter from Wal Marts. It's about $ 13.00 and to me it's worth it. I can keep track of how much I haven't moved. That's like when I think I have been moving and look and see 264, and I say oh, I haven't moved at all. So it keeps me moving.

I wear my pedometer every day. I have my goal set for 10000 steps plus per day. It forces me to get out and walk so I can reach my goal. I walk on my breaks and also on my lunch break. If I know I won't be able to walk on my lunch break I get up earlier and walk in the AM.

interesting reading. I know that when i wear a pedometer i am sometimes surprised to find that on a "busy" day I do not do as many steps as i thought i might have if I had guessed. helps keep track of what you are actually achieving and not what you think you are doing. emoticon

Pedometers Really Work to Increase Daily Walking Exercise
by David Gutierrez

(NaturalNews) The use of pedometers to track daily walking goals actually leads to an increase in how much people walk, according to a meta-analysis conducted by researchers at Stanford Medical School and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers examined the results of 26 studies on a total of 2,767 people. They found that people who set daily walking goals for themselves or who used pedometers to track their walking went approximately 2,000 steps farther per day than people who did not use pedometers or set goals.

The researchers suggested that pedometers may help people quantify their walking goals, and hold themselves to them.

"My sedentary patients know they need to be doing more, but they haven't been motivated," said lead author Dena Bravata. "I'm certainly recommending a pedometer and a step goal now."

Pedometers are small, matchbook-sized devices that are usually worn at the waist. The devices, which cost $5-$50, record how many steps a person takes, as measured by the impact of the foot upon the ground. In addition to counting steps, more elaborate models calculate distances traveled and allow users to track their numbers over time.

Patients who used pedometers also tended to show a slight improvement in weight and systolic blood pressure, although the researchers noted that this change did not appear to be due to the increased exercise. Bravata speculated that for some reason, people who use pedometers may end up adopting other healthy behaviors such as watching their diets.

Health experts warned that pedometers are not a quick-fix for obesity, and that it takes long-term commitment to improve health.

"The bottom line is, everything works for a month," said Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatrician and obesity expert from the University of California at San Francisco. "Everything that's novel works, and as soon as it stops being novel, it doesn't work."

"Can a pedometer help you? If you have the motivation, sure. If you don't, it's useless," he said.
