Wow, that's surprising that you lose muscle mass just by aging.

Wow, thank-you both for the articles. I think the one that Sarah_VW referenced is probably where I got that number from, but I also specifically remember an article that mentioned the figure of how much you lose when a person has lost 50 lbs.

I am trying to find this out because I have a friend who recently lost 50 lbs with weight watchers without doing any cardio or strength training and thought it might be of interest to her.

Thanks for the posts and such prompt replies!

You are correct that the number is 30%. This might be what you were looking for.

Adults lose between five and seven pounds of muscle every decade after age 20. Strength training will help prevent this muscle loss, and rebuild what you may have lost.

Hey all,I need some help. I remember reading an article (recently) that stated when a person loses 50 lbs without strength training they lose a certain amount of muscle mass (and I thought the figure was 30% of their muscle mass, but this is what I want to look up). Does anyone know the article that mentions this figure? I am pretty sure I read it on SparkPeople, but maybe it is from a different source and that is why I can't seem to find it.(?) If anyone can send me the link I would really appreciate it! Thanks!
