I, too, am baffled by the opinion that the more religious you are, the happier you are. I had an experience where I had PTSD issues, major depression, suicidal thoughts, and was just plain cracking up, triggered by a lot of bad things that had happened. I needed help, pronto, and went to a psychotherapist recommended by my jobs Employee Assistance Program. What did this woman tell me on the FIRST visit???? That she was sure that my symptoms would all be handled better if I were to go to her church. Honest!! I was so freaked out that I never went back, and it took me a full year to get the courage to try therapy again. (Luckily the next time I found a wonderful therapist who has literally been a life-saver, life-changer for me.) But, WTF, a therapist pushing her religion on a traumatized patient?!?!?! You can't get much pushier about your religion than that. I have a spiritual life, it's religion that I can't stand.

That article is interesting. For some reason it reminded me of A Softer World...

Maybe it was just the happiness thing. www.asofterworld.com/index.php?id=43

I think we've all been there, the "I'll pray for you" when they finally have nothing to say that is actually reasonable and logical with a condescending tone. Blind faith is what religion is and it's all fine and dandy with me so long as they keep their practices in their own home. If you want to throw some gasoline on the fire with your BF's sis, ask here why god won't answer her prayer. ;)

I don't engage in religious discussions unless I feel it's brought upon me. The last one was a family member wanting to buy a crucifix for my kid's room... errr... not unless I can hang it up-side-down ;)

Hah. Obliviousness might be nice... best I can come up with is to ignore it, and occasionally vent. :)

I told Boyfriend's sister that I am not religious. She said, "you believe in science!" And I said, "It doesn't require faith." So she said, "I'll pray for you..."

I guess it doesn't hurt me, but it is a bit annoying.

I know, right? It just really struck me wrong for some reason today... Must remember to ignore the offhand comments of others. Maybe I am just not getting enough exercise.

Hey Leauxra, :)

Yep, I remember that quiz. How annoying is that assuming we all believe in invisible supernatural things and that it puts us at a disadvantage?

I would say it depends if you've made your peace with the fact that there is no life after death which seems to be the big incentive, fear.

The question might be, how do you find continuity if it matters to you?

Personally, I don't of myself worse off, rather better off and find myself to be just as messed up as anyone else ;)

ETA: forgot; it's also easier to blame someone else than face reality, we're the one at fault for where we are.

I guess I am kind of new to actually doing anything with my Spark account... but I am trying. Reading discussions, reading articles, taking quizes...

And then today, I took the quiz, "How Stressed Are You?"

One of the items they wanted rated was, "I get strength from my religious beliefs." By marking it low, they counted it as higer risk for stress. Honestly, I feel pretty stress free about my lack of religious belief and lack of judgement of others for the most part, but this really pissed me off.

Yes, I know that there are lots of people who are religious... but it does not increase my health risk to be an athiest.

The question added stress to my life!
