Good for you, DIAMOND. I spent too many years in the "I lost--let's party" "I gained--drown the sorrows" hamster wheel, too. I'm with you 100% on your new ways of thinking and judging success.

"That wet blanket comment someone made rubbed me the wrong way."

Hi Barbara, I too felt a bit taken aback by it at first, but I know her well enough to know you're right, she did mean well.

BTW, I've decided not to follow her suggestion to compare the weights because part of my six-week commitment is NOT to weigh as I work to change my eating habits.

Some people use scales to measure their progress. Never worked for me. I lost? Let's party. I gained? Let's drown our sorrows in sugar.

So I'm measuring how my clothes feel and how well I follow my 14 steps. So far, that's working better than the number on that rectangular box ever did.

And BTW, that emoticron you were asking about? Boy, I sure guessed that one wrong!!! You don't even want to know what I thought it was, do you????? emoticon emoticon

Now I have one for you. What is "YINZ?" Yes, I Never Zip? You In Nice Zebra (pants)? Yet I Now Zonk?

You know me too well, SUSAN!

I was feeling free as a breeze and simultaneously "at loose ends". Triggers for mischief.

So, I've made a plan. It's back to some of my "flylady routines" that disappeared during the winter holocaust. My sink stayed clean, so I did manage to keep SOME of my routine going.

Everyone has a better sense of direction if they have structure.Planning ahead minimizes problems. One of my failings has been that I am one who has habitually rebelled against structure. I thought I didn't need it. I was cheating myself out of something that really makes life and weight management easier.

I had to find a structure that works for me. It's not rigid. It's in the form of routines (like dancing). When I plan to do certain things each day and some things on designated days, my muscle memory kicks in and I don't have to think about them. Planning my days is merely choreographing routines for my time.

Isn't it amazing the word games I have to play in order to really mind-f*uck myself into doing what I know I need to do?!!

Can you feel the positive vibes, WATERDIAMONDS? They're coming your way!

Boo, it's great that the rest of the week is yours! Be careful of not having structure, though. If you're like me, that's a challenging time. Maybe, time to make your own structure and stick to it. I know you probably already have your structure going but since this is my issue, it helps me if I talk/type, if only to myself... Last week, I had great structure (though maybe a bit too much) with working the night shift. I came home and slept every morning, got up and exercised every afternoon, and went to work. This week I'm completely off (7 days on, 7 days off) and I can't just get up and exercise, I've got to get Kooper out and spend time with him. I don't have to be up at a specific time, Kooper doesn't have to be out for a specific time, so it's all up in the air. There are too many choices for me... But, I'm trying to create some structure today by saying (to DH, and now you) that Kooper will be out for a max of 2.5 hours and I will go run right after he goes back into his cage... After that, I'm committed to working by emptying out some boxes and then making dinner. So, today is good and tomorrow I have a doctor appt mid-afternoon, so I'll have structure there...

See y'all tomorrow at the party!

~ Susan

The only time I enjoy disrobing in front of strangers is when I'm on a stripper pole, of course, so if you have a moment, send me some positive vibes, because I'm going in for a medical check up today for the first time in years.

The good news is, once this appointment is done, I'm going to start the Eat To Live program. That, I'm really looking forward to.

Thanks, Barbara. I am better because I meditated several times today. I handled the stress, I forgave the transgression and the transgressor and I moved on.

And most importantly, I didn't eat over any of it!

So I just read one of this week's most popular blogs about this woman losing. 100 pounds. And I just have to vent for a second.

Although I want to congratulate her on her success, she referenced God too much. As if God has been micromanaging her life for five years. As if it wasn't her doing all the work or her going out of her way to meet encouraging people. Grrrr. If someone wants to thank God for nature or "creating" so many tasty whole foods, I get it. But to discount one's own efforts and accomplishments and thank God for his immense help, that I do not get. Seriously, if God was micromanaging your weight, it wouldn't have taken you five years to lose 100 pounds. It would have taken much less time, don't you think? God could have stalled your car, forcing you to walk. God could have given the candy and ice cream truck drivers colds, so you wouldn't be tempted at the grocery store. God is omnipotent, right?

And that brings up another point: if God designed us so intelligently, then why do we even have the ability to become overweight or obese in the first place? That doesn't seem very intelligent to me.

Okay. I'm done.

Well the weekend is almost over. I never ever get my weekend list completed, but I think I did better than normal. And as cheesy as it sounds I went to the county fair with my Mom, but we had a blast yesterday even it if was 107 degrees.
Barb, I agree we have to find out triggers that we each have individually and work on changes our reactions to them. I am to have a 2nd back surgery soon and there are days I feel so awful so in the past I would eat horrible and move as little as possible but now I am sticking to the eating right and trying to move more even if it is just small things. I know it helps in the end. and usually the next day I feel better, physically and since I behaved myself then I feel better emotionally. But it is hard - hard -hard.

FITTINGIN130: So, sounds like you will be enoying the Harry Potter mania this week as well. I can't wait. I am gonna sit down with my friend and rewatch the last movie to make sure we have all out info correct. It is gonna be great (and sad that its the last). Enjoy!

Yes, we have gotten used to celebrating with food the day after "convincing ourselves" that we were "deprived", even though we were probably eating reasonably, about like the skinnier people at the event. I am trying to get over feeling deprived any time I'm not totally stuffing my face.

I have connected fun and "lots of food" together in my brain. Breaking that connection is taking some time. I'm getting better, though. I WAS careful the day after, and the feeling passed. It helped to come in here and say that I did well at the event and was being triggered to pig out. That got it out in the open, so I could deal with it, instead of pushing it down and hitting the junk food.

Spark Guy is all about spotting triggers. He says that dealing with them differently than we have in the past will help us get used to feeling proud of ourselves for each one of those small changes. We just have to keep repeating the good thoughts, planning and action steps as consistently as possible. Over time, the changes mount up into something big enough to change our lives permanently.

That's one of the things I like about SparkPeople. We learn the value of not feeding the old habits to weaken them and of rewarding and strengthening the new healthier habits by paying attention to them and feeling proud of ourselves.

My thoughts are the main culprits. I have to be careful to notice when I'm telling myself the same old crap, in order to justify overeating.

Interesting that you say that, Barbara. I agree completely. If I manage to stay on track during an event, I somehow talk myself into feeling "deprived" and end up backsliding the next day. Why would that be? Why not be proud of myself and grateful for the "small changes" I've made. One of life's great mysteries . . . .

That's comforting news about your uncle, in a way. How he is feeling is very understandable. It's tough to get up and move around, even if you know you need to, in a situation like his. Hospice workers are quite good at gradually coaxing people into action, though.

Good for you, for working to do better yourself yesterday. Friends can be pains-in-the-butt. I'm glad the co-workers are being helpful.
emoticon

I did well again yesterday, on a day when I have often let it all hang out. All day fun event with friends I don't often see. Plenty of food and drink available. I made reasonable choices and didn't go overboard. Ate what I wanted and watched the portion sizes. Kept track with little quickie notes on my ipod-touch.

I'm a little hungry today, so I need to be careful. The days after social events have habitually been days that have triggered my food demons.

Yesterday was much better, eating-wise. I am not doing well with my friends right now, aside from two coworkers who have been very helpful with lots of emotional struggle.

As far as my uncle, he is doing okay. Recovering quickly from the broken rib and collapsed lung but he is in hospice right now to regain his strength and does not want to get up out of bed or do anything to show that he is ready to be at home alone again. And of course he's emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon that he can't go home yet, but does not want to be up out of bed. Fingers crossed we can get him moving more and then back home.

Those habitual thinking patterns so many of us share seem to make sense at the time that we are in the mood to overeat. It's only afterward, when we're in our right minds that they make about as much sense as slashing all of those tires because one tire was imperfect.

Hang in there. Are you still worried about your great-uncle, or is he doing better?
emoticon
I hope your Day #1 went well. If not, start another Day #1. I've been struggling lately and something has finally kicked in again. I have completed 6 days in a row of doing what I know I need to, in order to lose weight. Sometimes, we just have to keep at it, be patient with ourselves and wade through the rough patches as best we can.

Quote of the day
"If you cheat: get right back on track, immediately. A lot of people think after cheating, “I’ve blown it so I might as well REALLY blow it!” Let me ask you - if you get a flat tire do you get out of your car and slash the other three? Thanks y'all. I had a stiff drink after all - ICE COLD WATER :)

Trying to get all the emotions under control and booze wouldn't help haha.

emoticon all around indeed! I love hugs. I also ate a healthy dinner and am trying not to compensate with chocolate. EEESH.

This healthy stuff is hard when our emotions are out of whack. It's been a while since I've felt legitimately unevenly keeled. Hmmm. Thanks for letting me lean on you while I get my balance back.

That WAS a rough weekend. A lot of stuff hit the fan all at once!

My mother was only 72 when she died, due to an aneurysm in her heart. I hope the docs can prevent that in your great-uncle's case. My cousin with COPD is doing great right now, thanks to portable oxygen tanks.

Wouldn't it be great if we could go on a big drunken bender together, after we get this weight under control? What a party that would be!

I'm not sure if I want to start with a beer or something stronger. Got bad news about my great-uncle today. While the collapsed lung and broken rib are healing well, they also found an aneurism is his heart, kidney failure, COPD, and a few other things for good measure. He's 77.

And to top it all off, I biffed it hard yesterday (drinking on Father's Day with my dad usually ends in someone getting hurt) so I feel like a whiny b**** who probably shouldn't have anything to drink (especially since it's a week night). UGH.

Logged food so far today. Emptying out more drawers and closets this afternoon and evening. The plan is to have a healthy dinner (already in slow cooker)--cold again here today. Geez!
One healthy snack after dinner and call it a day.

I have fairly deep-set authority issues...challenges feel way too much like someone barking at me. Plus, I just don't have the kind of life where I can sweep away everything else going on to do X, Y, and/or Z on a given day...I get it in where I can!!

Woman on a park bench, reading the newspaper.
Man sits down next to her.

She says, "I have been reading about horrific treatment of cats without homes. Do you like pussy cats?"

Their eyes meet, prolonged eye contact. Then, he kisses her passionately, and they proceed to have fantastic sex right there in the park. Afterwards, as she straightens her clothing, she asks, "How did you know that's what I wanted?"

He asked, "How did you know my name is Katz?"

Dancing Penguin, hang in there, and enjoy surprising the doctor's office with that weight loss! Last time I went in, they asked my weight and apologized they had to do it. My response was "ask away, lady, I've lost 30 pounds since the last time I was here" and she was suitably impressed :-)

I'm seeing my weight loss journey as chunks of 15 pounds at a time, then I slack off on tracking and take a break, and let my body settle into that new set point. It's actually my body that picked the 15 pound thing, and it took me 2 rounds to see the pattern. And it knew I wasn't ready to lose again this January, so I didn't even though I was tracking. Turns out I needed to work on the emotional issues, and now that I am doing that, the weight is slowly coming off. So don't beat yourself up about feeling lethargic. Relax, and take a break for a while; maybe that's exactly what you need.

I'm located in Pacific Daylight Time.

I have heard of Dean Koontz but he tend to write in the Horror realm, I tend to read mostly hard sci-fi or hard science. My daughter has read many of his books and tells me they are "ok" (whatever that means in 21 year old speak).

Went to the doctor Monday. She hadn't heard of Spark. I didn't go into a lot of detail because the way it came up was I said I was a good 20 pounds less than this last year, so all the weight gain has been recent. She wanted to know what I'd done before. Track food.

The trouble is that I've had difficulty caring, of late. And it shows.

Bleh.

Lala - I had my margaritas (well, Courvoisier) on Thursday!

And now it's almost 11 a.m. here in Toronto, which means, in just an hour, it'll be 5 pm in the U.K. :D

Breaking out more margaritas: emoticon

Susan, I thought I was the conversation killer...I don't know how many threads stop with me as the last poster! I guess my humorous sarcasim doesn't read well in black and white.

Looks like rain this weekend, so might stay in side nurse a few drinks and catch up on my reading...Any good books?
