Goodness Barbara, I sure as hell wish I could find my Basil Fawlty'esque humor in this area, but living in it 24/7, never having a moment's peace from the staring, the noise of hundreds of kids on this block ( they all have 6 kids mimimum, many have 10, 12 or more, the ones next door to me have 9 ), knowing that if I need help with my Dad or I fall again, or need anything that a normal neighbor would do for you I am completely on my own. It is incredibly hard for me, as I am quite gregarious, helpful and friendly and living in such utter isolation is not for me.

One day all being well, I will be living permanently in England. My fiance and I had a lot of kinks to iron out which is why after living there with him for a year, I had to come back, but coming back was ever so hard, after having a life there that was a trillion times different.

Send the humor fairy my way BB, ok ?? I could sure use her. emoticon

You'll need to keep your sense of humor in high gear if you are to be there for a while longer.

Your mentioning that you have many stories to tell after all these years makes me wonder if there isn't a book waiting to be written by you, either fiction or non. You'll feel less angry about the stuff they pull, if you think of it as material for your great American-Italian-Jewish novel.

I never would have had any idea this kind of thing was going on right in our own country.

It could make anybody crazy.

Hope you can hold out!

Bizarre is not the word, I have so many stories of their 600+ daily rules and rituals that again people may believe I am a good storyteller.

No, I do not wear a wig or do anything but live my own life in our home in their area. :(
I come and go as I please, I am stared at every time I leave the building despite my being a very modest person dress wise. Being obese for a long time, made me cover up for years now, so my standard 'uniform ' is a pair of dark leggings, rock and roll t-shirt, sandals or Crocs. I never show clevage or bare arms, so hardly scandalous that somebody like me at my age bears staring at. To be stared down kids young enough to be my grandchildren and not corrected for their rudeness is beyond the pale.

They do not want anybody in their shops but as you are not breaking any laws, they are stuck with you, but will make you so unwelcome and uncomfortable, plus throw the change at you, you would be crazy to continue to patronize them.

They never say a word to me, after 30 years I have never been asked in, helped, offered anything, apart from when I can be of service on a Friday or Sat which I no longer do. If I am subhuman Sun-Thurs, then I am afraid I can not offer you my free services on Fri and Sat.

My boyfriend from England could not believe what he saw and experienced, he never saw such behavior, weird rituals, anti social behavior in his life, he was fixing my bike in Jan and turned around to find one had come up my driveway and was staring him down !!!!

I hope I do not lose my mind before this house is sold and I can clear off. emoticon

How bizarre! I just recently learned about the wigs, reading online. The only good part is knowing your house is worth so much $$.

I didn't realize they wouldn't want you in their shops. Do you wear a wig yourself, just to keep the peace?

BB !
Everything and anything you do around here will upset them ! You can not even go to the front of your house to throw out the garbage without your wig on, pantyhose on and arms covered from shoulder to elbow ! You can not even use the shower in your own home when you have your monthly !
You will get money thrown at you, should you be foolish enough to patronize one of their shops, something I have long since given up, as they will not risk you contaminating their men with your possible menstrual blood.

They also circumsize their babies at home, do not wear the color red, will not answer a door bell, drive, touch money, or answer the phone on Sat.

This area has a tremendous amount of HIV infection as they are not allowed one of the most common of sexual practices, so they go to prostitutes to pay for it.

30 years of being the only 'goy' on the block has taught me a whole lot, unfortunately it is stuff I would rather not know.

When my Dad goes to glory, I am selling this place to the highest bidder, which will be somewhere in the 2 million buck range, they want us out of here so badly they can taste, and clear off.
Constantly have had to deal with them coming up the driveway ringing the bell asking us to sell them the house. We are the very last Italians on both sides of the street and virtually in the whole area.

Sorry guys - I know it is one long litany of woe, but some people don't realize how difficult it is, many people have said to me' what's an Hassidic anyhow ? ' So the things I say sound like either horror fiction or clearly sci-fi !!

Sorry you had to experience that prejudice growing up, Reine. Other than that, the practices seem so quirky. How is finagling others to do the forbidden for you, so you still get the benefit, following the law? I will not waste any brain cells on that.

I imagine the male H. Jews are very good customers of internet porn sites.

One of my college roommates kept kosher in her diet. Her parents brought her a mini-fridge, and she yelled at her father for putting the meat beside the milk, instead of on the other shelf. I know there are old testament laws about it. As long as it doesn't bother anyone, live and let live. . .

But,in the TV show I saw, the door of an apt. building was supposed to stay locked, and other tenants didn't like the sabbath visitors squeezing in without being buzzed in, just because of their sabbath law. The Jewish tenant refused to buzz them in. In this case, the other tenants had a right to complain about strangers being able to get into the building on Saturdays.

As with anything else, "Your right to extend your arm ends where my nose begins."

That's too funny about Elvis, and US riding through Brooklyn with our bootylicious bodies.

INteresting discussion. Thanks for the link, DANCING.
Too bad ELVIS is no longer around, since I think he might be needed to make peace between the hassidic jews and bike-lane travelers.

Here's a google link for background on what's happening with the bike lanes.

When we get our bodies to the sexy level of fitness we desire, how about a field trip? We could all meet in New York, rent bikes, and wear our most revealing gear to ride past the Hassidics to torment them and make their lives he77 on earth? Too irreverant? Never mind.....

I did have some experience with a person refusing to work on a Saturday, come to think of it. Ten years ago I was field operations manager for a census office. One Saturday when the regional office was leaning on us to meet a deadline, I called an enumerator who hadn't shown up for work. She flatly refused to work because it was Saturday. I explained to her that others were working on THEIR Sabbaths (Sundays) and she still refused. We were all working long hours, 7 days a week, so I was cranky and it really ticked me off. I told her we were unable to function without her total commitment, that I could not make an exception for her, and that I would be sending someone to her home within the hour to retrieve her materials. She said "fine" and we parted company.

To the best of my knowledge you could turn on the air conditioning when you're in their house during the sabbath, but they can't do it nor can they ask you to. They also can't ask you to turn it off when you leave, they can only try saying things like "wow it's cold in here" and hope you get the hint.

The idea is that if you just have someone who you tell to turn electronics on and off, that's skirting around the sabbath rules. Some people get a shabbos goy, which is someone who isn't Jewish (or at least isn't Orthodox) to turn up Saturday night and turn off any random electronics that they forgot to turn off before the sabbath started, or turn on the heat, or whatever. They're told in advance (before the sabbath started) what they need to do because you can't ask someone to work during the sabbath, even if he/she isn't Jewish.

Ooh, apparently Elvis was once a shabbos goy: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shabbos_goy

Hearing that they would call you to turn on their AC's on the sabbath is quite a revelation. I didn't learn until recently about the non-use of electronics on the sabbath, and it was on a TV show, telling about a problem because of sabbath visitors who would not ring the buzzer, and it was a problem for other tenants in the building.

I never thought about their own AC's in their apartments. It's one more thing about the most extreme parts of every religion, that it's fascinating to hear about, to me, at least.

It's true, the ones on the road in the remote county were very friendly.

About the catholic religious things where I live, they were in model homes - evidently to appeal to Catholics, without regard to alienating non-Catholics. My location is just north of Albany.

I know it is always a no no to talk politics and religion, it rarely achieves much, but anger and hurt feelings, but I just felt I had to say something about your thread.

I am a native NY, and apart from 9 extended trip to England, have not lived elsewhere. I live in an area of Brooklyn that is 100% Hassidic. It is not by design, my grandfather bought this house in 1950 when it was heavily Italian and Greek, but the area changed in the early 70's after he was already dead and for sentimental reasons my father refuses to sell this house.

I was nearly bowled over when you said friendly. They treat us like we are lepers, I live on this street for 30 years and have never been asked in once apart to turn on their ac's in the summer on a Sat. Stared at up and down, ignored, horrible.
I have been walked around when I fell, as their 'religion' does not allow them to have any contact with women they are not married to.

I better stop now, I sense my being banned off SP for religion bashing.

With regard to crucifixes, NY has a heavy population of Irish, Italian and Polish folks, those groups are mainly Catholic, so perhaps you have been in a lot of those areas, not sure really.

What part of NY are you in? Must be a very different part than I live in... I definitely don't see a lot of crucifixes hanging in stores or doctor's offices.

fascinating

I read a novel a few years ago about a group of orthodox Jews who spend most of the weekends of the summer in the same town in upstate NY. The lives of the people in the novel was interesting - the plot line, not so much.

On the Hasidic Jews' hats: I believe the type of hat you're referring to is a shtreimel, but there are other types of hats.

It's good to hear that your move is over and that you're out and about in New York.

One never really knows about a place until they've lived there, right? I'm sure there will be MANY surprises in store for you.

Be careful. Try to keep your sports injuries to a minimum.

I already knew it's heavily Catholic here, but I didn't expect to see crucifixes and other religious items in model homes ( ! ) or doctors' offices ( ! ), even though it is private property. They must think the crucifixes will attract more people than they turn off, OR are they trying to tell us something emoticon ?

Not a surprise, but a curiosity, are the ultra-orthodox Jews we saw walking along the roads on Saturday (don't drive on the Sabbath) when we drove way into the Catskills. I had seen the men's long sidecurls before, but not this type of hats - large round fur ones. They were so friendly to us as we drove past - couldn't help gawking at the outfits.

We are on an adventure!
