I'm not a fan of the true "continental" breakfast anymore, because it's an all-carb meal and I need some protein.

But good lord-- Biscuits and Gravy? Hash browns? That's going too far in the other direction!

Our portion sized are huge, and we expect them to be bigger now. Unfortunately, _we're_ bigger as a result!

My Mom and Dad drove across Canada this fall then went down to San Fransisco and across the States back home. All the hotels had continental breakfasts but when they crossed the border they found the breakfasts got a lot fattier. They'd been trying to figure out what this thick, creamy lumpy substance was. They'd finally decided it must be oatmeal and my Mom was about to serve herself a bowl when someone whispered to her it was gravy to go on top of the biscuits. The continental breakfasts in Canada tended to be coffee, tea, fresh fruit, and muffins while the ones in the States were more hashbrowns, eggs, sausage, biscuits, and gravy.

They couldn't get over the portion sizes at restaurants either. We usually find the restaurant portions to be quite large here (enough to need a doggy bag when we go home) but they found the portions were even bigger.

And Canadians routinely go cross-border shopping because the States has way more variety in junk food than we do here.

I work in a doughnut store and certainly see the liquid calories. I'll have customers come in and order a low-fat muffin... and a large coffee with three creams and 4 sugars (which ends up filling half the cup before I pour the coffee).

We have such an overavailability of junk food in the U.S.-- fast food, snacks (sweet or salty), all of it staring you in the face at every gas station, strip mall, convenience store or grocery store. By contrast, other countries have less junk randomly available and more of an emphasis on real food.

Then there's our tendency to drive everywhere instead of walk...

And in recent years, we've made the problem worse with the Starbucks and Jamba Juice crazes. One of the best dieting tips around is, "Don't drink your calories." But people are regularly chugging down specialty coffee drinks and smoothies, most at 300-500 calories. It's become a lifestyle habit that really helps pack on the pounds.

We need to wake ourselves up and take charge of our own lives!

@REINEMARGOT: I lived in the UK for a while, and I remember it being so much more HEALTHY than most of the US...but after visiting recently, I noticed that obesity is starting to become more common there too! Of course it's not at Texas-levels yet...but it definitely more prevalent than it was 15 years ago.

Thankfully I live in California, where there's INTENSE social pressure to be healthy and (more importantly...which is sad) thin. Otherwise, I'd probably weigh more than my car.

The tide is turning. I believe that as schools change their lunch programs and the focus begins to beam a light on the diseases of obesity, we will see changes. It IS possible to eat out and keep the calories in check. But it takes planning and thinking about it.

Apparently Australia beat us in the weight game, actually. We're number 2 now.

I am not really surprized to be honest. The changes I have seen in my lifetime are incredible and I have not even hit 50 yet.
NY is a 24/7 society, junk is available every hour of the day on every corner. It is incredibly cheap to eat in this country, many will disagree, but try living in the UK ( which I am dying to get back to, I absolutely love it there) where things are a third the size here and a mimimum of double or triple the price. Even gas is 3 times the price here.
All of this created the mess we are now in, myself included.

There's also the fact that food can be quick, cheap and healthy, but usually not all at the same time!

Not to mention the brainwashing that we all get from a very early age on TV.

Is it really that surprising? We drive everywhere. Everyone eats the ubiquitous fast food. Sugar is in everything! Snacks, frozen food and just junk in general are the best sellers at grocery stores. Color me shocked, but we live in a fat culture. We are down on people who don't live the fast and easy lifestyle, but then are absolutely terrible to people who can't eat crap all day and stay thin!

Is this obesity epidemic a spiritual problem? Failed U.S. farm policy?

All I know is, there is safety in numbers. I'm no longer the only fat chick in BodyPump class at the Y, or standing in line at Starbucks. We are everywhere.
