Ugh, I just saw a prayer offer in one of my friends' blogs yesterday! I usually just ignore those...if they want to pray for me, fine, but I'm pretty sure all the heathen-like things I do on a daily basis will negate any prayer benefits ;)

It is a bit insulting though...the assumption that we are poor souls in need of saving. I'm just fine, thanks!!!

I would be offended, too, if a person publicly prayed for me in response to something I had shared in a blog. The nerve!!! How insulting!!!

The implication is that prayer is necessary, to rescue this poor misguided blog-writer from her evil self.

I AM glad that the pushy, judgmental action sent you to us. WE think you're great.

I found my way to the C&W team after some unknown Spark member publicly prayed for me in response to a blog I posted. I was shocked and, frankly, kind of horrified at that--what makes people think I want them to share their Jesus when I've not said a peep about religion on my SparkPage? Then, after some reflection, I decided that the whole scene was totally worth it because it led me here.

Welcome, GIRRRLYCHILD- hope you pop over to other threads... one of the great things about this group is that religion actually rarely comes up... this thread is an anomaly for us. FYI.

Girllly, you have a very good point. I was discussing with a neighbor Pat Robertson's assertion that Haiti was being punished for having made a pact with the devil, and he said, that's the kind of crap that chases people away from Christianity. He and his family go to a non-denominational church. Thank you for the reminder that not all Christians are nut-cases and proselytizers.

Nekkid and bi is good, too. :)

You demonstrate the kind of religious compassion and tolerance that I admire. We're not against religion here, so much as we are IN FAVOR OF an individual's freedom to be and believe what works for that individual, without being put down for it.

Most of us here feel as you do. Nekkid and bi doesn't bother us, either. Make yourself at home.

howdy....i just joined this group....and, hmmm....how to say this? i am a Christian. but i get really irritated by people who insist on bringing "religion" into everything. i have my faith, but it's not my place to shove it down anybody's throat.

i also don't see what the problem with being bi or naked is, tho. i'm bi....and usually nekkid. :)

overall, it makes me sad when people who proclaim to be a part of a faith/religion that's supposed to teach love go around being so hateful towards their fellow human beings. especially when, i would assume, we're all here for basically the same reasons....

can i apologize on behalf of the rest of us non-psycho christians? i swear, we aren't all judgemental a$$holes.

I think people filled with that much venom will behave the same regardless of their religious beliefs. I also believe that many of those people *use* their religious beliefs to belittle others and feel superior in a world in which something makes them feel inferior.

In a nutshell: she has "issues" and it's not her religion.

Hi, Raphaela, I'm new to this group, too. Someone downthread (upthread?) said it is important to carefully pick the people and groups we want to be involved with. Sound advice. As we say in our house, no good deed goes unpunished. Report this woman now, I say, and save the grief she will heap on someone else -- a random act of kindness. Better day today, you.

No but seem to keep running into them! LOL, seriously though, I feel sorry for people like that. They live rigid little lives inside rigid huge rules and most are secretly miserable. My mom was recently whining about some politicking at her church and I finally looked at her and said, "I thought religion was supposed to make you happy! All it seems to do is make you miserable." She didnt have much to say.

All of that meaningless drivel about "in His name, this" "in His name, that" that permeates SparkPeople at large is exhausting for me, too, PENGUIN. I see many comments "out there" as being hurtful and isolating to those who aren't on the same page with the "religious insiders".

Oh, well...they're not ALL annoying and judgmental.

Boo, I cannot imagine that mug being comforting even to a casual believer. Before I even got to the part about recommending smashing it on the driveway, that's already where I was going. At least breaking something like that could provide a momentary release.

I find that the confrontational are few here, but the religious quotes and the short posts with God invoked in every paragraph are many. It's exhausting.

Yipes! I can only imagine what pain your friend suffered during that time period, ROOBY. I'm sure she was worn out emotionally and physically. To care for her husband and son for so long and then to lose them anyway, in a two-week time period. So sad.

I agree that the inscription on the mug must have felt like a slap in the face, after all that she had endured. I'm glad you were there to help.

People, like that co-worker, forget that such inscriptions are meaningful only for those who believe them.

I heard some comic say that God has a sadistic sense of humor. Can't recall who said it.

I had a friend who lost her husband to Crohn's disease (in his forties), and their 11-yr old son to leukemia two weeks later. During the four or five years before this, she was juggling her job and taking care of the two people who meant most to her, both of them critically ill.

After the second funeral, a co-worker gave her a mug that read, "God never gives us more than we can handle."

She was BEYOND ANGRY.

I said, go take that effing thing out to the driveway right now and smash it.

'God' gives people 'more than they can handle' on a pretty darned regular basis, in my experience.

I'm quite sure that *I* was not created in his image - because I'd be a whole lot nicer than he is, and have a sense of humor about it.

If someone gave me a mug that said that, in that circumstance, they'd have been spending the afternoon at the ER having it extracted from their rectum.

It really hurts when someone we love dies. I would find no comfort in the comment that "God must have needed our loved one more than we do". An all-powerful dude would need a human person for WHAT???

As MARE says, "intent" has a lot to do with whether I'm pleased or annoyed by someone offering to "pray for me". If it's their holier than thou way of being critical of something about me, they are barking up the wrong tree. If it's a good-hearted sincere gesture, meant to give me strength in a time of need, I think it's nice.

I got this this weekend from someone at a family reunion. "I'll pray for you" I said pleeeeeeeeese don't! I don't want God paying any attention to me, last time he noticed me he took my only son. I kept hearing how God must have need him more than I do etc. I said if you do get God's attention tell him to go stop a war or something and leave me alone!

When my brother died, I appreciated the "I'll be praying for you", as just a loving response.
When I talk about being bi, or naked, or not a Christian, and somebody says they'll be praying for me... well, that's a whole other kettle of boiling fish.

The only bad experience I've had like that so far (I've been on SP for over 2 years now) was from a bunch of Nascar lovin', right wing fringe, "Christians" that came here together from a yahoo chat thing they all got booted from.
They have no intention of losing weight or getting healthy, they just want to make trouble and cause confrontation at every turn.
I just drop any group I see them join.

Ha, now I "know" karate AND I have backup! She'll never see it coming. ;)

She's been messaging me again this evening, telling me all about how Christian she is ("very Christian," apparently, although I don't know what that means), and how I need to "grow up, kid." I told her not to contact me again for any reason, so hopefully that's that.

I honestly didn't know the Holy Ghost was so itchy when it crawled up your shorts.

RAPHAELA, you tried.

Sorry you ran across an intolerant Christian or two, who behaved in a way that, from what I've read, Jesus himself would not condone.

Here's a prayer I ran across a few days ago that might help you feel better:
"Dear God, your most visible representatives here on Earth, are all a bunch of kooks. Sorry."

Welcome to the team. I really admire and respect the people here, and I think you will, too. Kind, thankful for diversity, supportive, smart, funny...I could go on for days. Make yourself at home. This team is our own special refuge from intolerance.

BTW, ROOBYBEGONIA, your profile picture is blowing my mind.

Call me sensitive, but I was a bit upset about that thread (I'm sure you couldn't tell, ha). I don't feel quite so much like a fish out of water any more, now that I've heard from some like-minded Sparkers, so thank you all.

It's nice to know that this sort of thing isn't a normal occurrence here. Thanks for the confirmation that the site population isn't made up entirely of closed-minded individuals. I wouldn't have been driven away quite that easily, but it might have made me a bit more wary of the forums.

On a side note, my husband was sitting on the couch when I got that PM, coaching me to respond only with "Bitch, I know karate."

Sadly, I do not know karate, so I resisted. ;)

I can attest to Raphaela's recounting of this episode. I was in at the very beginning of the thread, when it was light and fun and amusing. Unfortunately it soon turned ugly and stupid. Raphaela's was one of the few consistent voices of calm. But the strident posts of the believers refused to be placated. It was nasty and unpleasant.

I truly hope, Raphaela, that you do not allow such ignorant people to drive you away from Sparks. There are many nice people here as well.

Regards,
Alex

Oh, I'm sorry you had such bad experience! Don't let it sour you on SP in general though. I've never encountered anyone who treated me badly. The worst thing 'round here is that a huge number of people have bible verses or praise in the signatures or on their SparkPages - I mean, more power to 'em if it makes the happy, it's just more stuff I have to skip over when I read a post.

Ick. So sorry Raphaela! I've been around awhile and haven't had anything like that...I think, AND HOPE (but not necessarily pray emoticon ) that it's rare.

That's too bad, honey, that someone had to make the effort to insult you privately as well.

Look at it this way - we need those kind of people in the world, and they need to reproduce. Otherwise, there won't be anyone to work at McDonalds and Walmart. Or was that shop there? I forget.

Okay, that was really horrid and mean.

I feel better.

Hey there,

I have to say that, in my year-long membership of SP, I've only encountered one instance of inappropriate behaviour and the moderators dealt with it swiftly and surely. Bullying is not tolerated on here under any circumstances, so if someone (who is supposed to be a Christian(!)) starts giving you a hard time, just report their inappropriate behaviour and they'll be brought to task.

Thankfully there's not a lot of people who behave like that, so don't be discouraged from using this site. In my experience, most people are friendly and supportive, so stick around a while. And don't try to intervene in arguments that aren't any of your business - I learned that lesson the hard way! Let other people sort their own disputes out and just concentrate on doing your own thing.

Best of luck on your journey.

Take a deep breath.

Let it out.

Take another. REEEEEEALLY deep.

Let it out.

Seriously, those bozos don't matter. You tried to make peace. She didn't want any. If she continues to bother you via SparkMail (or otherwise, say, on your SparkPage), then bring it to the attention of the SP moderators. They'll deal with it quite swiftly.

On the whole, though? She's the one sitting there drinking her own bitter brew. All you did was make nice. :D

So.

Welcome to the team! :) We've got an eclectic mix on here - but one thing stands out: we're tolerant of each others' foibles and fancies and size and shape and general nuttiness. Oh, wait: Nuttiness is actually encouraged! :)

Cheers,
Maya

I'm a new member and I haven't even introduced myself to the team yet, but I have to get this off of my chest. I'm sorry.

I was recently involved in a thread where a Christian and a non-Christian were both being rather rude to one another. I tried to bring peace, and the Christian went off and started insulting non-believers, threatening us with "eternal hell" and saying that we are not "grown up." I tried to be as polite as possible to point out that she has every right to believe whatever she wants to, but I'd appreciate the same respect.

I was then accused of creating conflict where none existed (because apparently calling people's intelligence and maturity into question is not creating the conflict to start with). Okay, whatever. It's the internet. Who cares?

But then I got a private message that not only blatantly misinterpreted half of what I had to say (she read my typing the word "antagonistic" as "agnostic" for instance, and proceeded to accuse me of being too stupid to use the word), but informed me that my attempts to make peace were pointless because "Christians aren't supposed to be buddy buddy with non-believers."

I am dismayed. Utterly appalled. I'm new to the site and I can't believe I've found such intolerance already. I guess it shouldn't surprise me.

Is this the sort of thing that happens often at SP? I'm so upset. I really like this site, but if that's the sort of reaction I should expect to find I'm not sure how happy I'll be here.
