Looks like we may have to add an UN-SABOTAGE AWARD, since sometimes we have THOSE KINDS OF DAYS when we lose our standing as saboteurs. How about this one?

Yay, SUSAN. Yay, LALA. Yay, ME.

That doesn't mean that I'm throwing in the towel.
MAYA'S gym adventure has inspired me to remember that I have a gym with great equipment 5 miles away that is free to me, as a Silver Sneakers member. I haven't been there in weeks. What's up with that? Am I so spoiled that I won't do it if it isn't dancing, pilates or a Wii game? Sounds like I deserve a crown.

Fine then. I get my crown back!
emoticon emoticon emoticon

I *have* to stop letting appointments freak me out. A couple of weeks ago, it was the work holiday party, yesterday it was the fitness follow-up assessment at the gym. No matter that I told myself "he's just a trainer, NOT someone with any right to tell you what to do" (no, not MY trainer. Just A trainer at the gym. I'm too cheap to *have* a trainer!)

I was stressed. Weighed in - 4 pounds heavier than a month ago. Worse. FOUR whole percent fatter (BF% rose from 40 to 44.2)!!! Did 5 pushups (yay, little win - the last test had me at ONE). Did 22 squats in a minute (my fault - I wasn't listening when he told me the goal - as MANY as possible; instead, I was doing the "slow squats for best results" crap). And only held the modified plank for 43 seconds (50 was last time's time to beat)!

Sigh. I told *him* I wasn't majorly upset at having deteriorated so much in just 4 weeks, but my eating for the rest of the day tells a different story. And I was up another pound this morning.

Okay, I know that *last* pound was only stress and will go away soon, but I'm majorly ticked at the other 4 and at the lower fit-test results. Grrrrr!

Not ticked enough to stop eating. Just enough to have steam coming out of my ears.

But at least I have my crown back! :) I will TAKE a small win at this point. :)

I too kind of Un-sabotaged myself last night. I was settling in for an evening of logic puzzles when a Wii Fit Plus commercial came on, and I remembered that I still needed to get some tennis in. So up I got, found a bra, and proceeded to get my bum kicked by two odd looking little cartoon characters. I was having so much fun that I went 10 minutes over my minimum time and didn't want to quit until my arm started to ache a bit.

I've been too busy to sabotage myself too. Last night I got home and ate with Wes and Kooper and then had under an hour before bedtime... Today will be the same story (I'm thinking).

I have no entries for the contest today. It's a pretty decent day. I'm too busy to SABOTAGE myself. I know it's a lame excuse....

Oh, well...I'll just rest on the laurels of my glorious past, my rich history as a self-saboteur.

OTHER PEOPLE weren't trying to give me trouble today, either. What's this world coming to???

You gals are doing great - WAY to steal my crown, ladies!

Boo - that was AWESOME handling of your WildChild and famine brain! I'm impressed.

And today, I don't deserve the crown anyway:

Today, I had every intention of overdoing things yet again. Worked at the kiddie store in the mall - with a light-for-me breakfast in my tum. Well, as *usual* on my lunch break, my brain was in "let's eat everything in sight" mode.

Stood in line at KFC to get myself one of those Big Crunch sandwiches. Paid. Noticed I was wearing my name tag from the kiddie store. Pulled it off and stuck it in my pocket.

Yes.

The same pocket that had the debit card in it.

Sigh.

Remembered instantly why this was a bad idea, pulled the tag back out and stuck it on my lapel again.

Went over to New York Fries and ordered myself a small fries (hey, *everyone* needs a good serving of fries - for the potassium, really!). Handed over the debit card to pay.

Er.

The poor guy swiped it about 10 times before we decided it wasn't going to work. They'd already dished up the fries, and they know me there (let's just say I'm a rather frequent visitor), so they laughed and told me to pay with my other debit card after work. Which I did.

That put paid to my trying to eat anything *else* on my lunch break, thank goodness. (Yes, I've been known to eat WAY more than that if my brain thinks I'm hungry - whether or not I really am!)

So. A fried chicken sandwich and fries. Actually fit nicely into my calorie allowance for the day - whee! :)

AND I came home and made a yummy veggie stew that'll last me for a few meals - yay! ONE less excuse to eat out at lunch. Oh, make that TWO less excuses - at least until I replace the debit card! :)

Cheers,
Maya

Here's a DOUBLE CROWN for SUSAN and LALA. Nice job. I learned the hard way, not to look at FOOD PORN or even TOO MANY recipes. I have to think as little as possible about food or I risk being off and running, on the SEE FOOD diet.

bah-dum-bump
emoticon

Poor KOOPER. You USED him, SUSAN. Well, I'll be a dirty bird. You've made him an accessory to your sabotage. He should really get a crown, too. Here, birdy-birdy.
emoticon

I've completed TWO straight evenings without overeating. I TRIED to sabotage myself and failed miserably. At 9pm, my current food curfew, I started telling myself I wanted to eat. My inner wild child warned me that she might just go into "famine brain" and my dictator self rolled her eyes. I reassured my wild child that we had plenty of food in the house and weren't likely to starve and that it would be fun to take a hot bath and read something escapey, since it's so cold.

This morning, I made ANOTHER FEEBLE ATTEMPT at SABOTAGE. I had bought a loaf of banana nut bread FOR MY HUSBAND. This morning my wild child wanted some and threatened me with the "famine brain" again. I decided it was reasonable to re-work my breakfast plan to include 1 serving.

That gave me the opportunity to wipe out the whole loaf, like I've done on some previous occasions. But, alas! I ate it slowly, enjoyed every bite, and was satisfied. I've clearly lost a step in my self-saboteur skills.
emoticon
Oh, well, tomorrow's another day.

Speaking of nasty birds... last night Kooper forced food down my throat! Ice cream, m&m's, walnuts, whipped cream, and (Kooper's favorite) cereal! I felt so guilty for leaving him in his cage all day and then coming home and eating stuff he couldn't eat that when I got the cereal out I had to encourage him. He eats so much better when I eat *with* him! LOL! And yeah, I was *over* 2,000 calories yesterday!

I might have to take that crown for this past week, thank you! Two words for you: Food Porn.

I have been drooling through page after page after page of faboo food pictures and recipes at a site called Food Gawker (don't DO IT!). It links to a billion other foodie blogs with decadent photos. I have added approximately 50 new recipes to my desktop file, and none of them are diet friendly.

So there...

Muahaha. Okay, Boo. YOU can have the crown back. Here: emoticon

I just put all that food in the nutrition tracker - WHAT? I'm still below 2,000 calories for the day! Wheee!

So, despite the chip-and-dip (oh, I "forgot" to mention dip earlier, huh?) attack, I'm within my personal goal of "under 2,300 calories for weight-loss". Now to try to keep THAT up for 7 days! :)

I'll have you know that I have also had a habit of starting my day like a rock star, and then having it all come tumbling down at night, REPEATEDLY.

Nah-nah-na-nah-nah!

I have set myself a 9pm curfew on comfy yum yums. After that, I am looking for my nourishment elsewhere, something inedible that I also enjoy. I'm 3 days from turning myself around. I did not overeat last night. By Tuesday morning, I'll decide if I can do another 4 days.

You may have to have your "popcorn/chip-buying" license revoked, until the fluffiness goes away. As you know, we aren't really saving money when we buy things that stand between us and what we really want. Your ROYAL picture will be going up at Costco within 24 hours, with the caption, "Do not serve this woman."

You really were having a great day. I think it turned to crap when you decided to let those people drag you around, powerless, all afternoon. Right? What would you have rather been doing?

You way have won this round, MISSY, but the rest of us are not throwing in the towel. We have skills.

NO. ME! Memememememe!

So today started out so well, right? Got in that great workout early this morning, ate a healthy breakfast.

Then went out for dimsum with the family - ate lots of steamed shrimp wontons, just ONE fried wonton.

Was stuck in the car as they went from mall to mall to mall getting their errands done. Getting antsy. Final stop was Costco.

Umm.

YEAH.

The emoticon QUEEN emoticon of saboteurs got it into her head to go buy popcorn at Costco. Which was a fine decision - I'll be keeping the bags at work. But then I saw - and bought - the ginormous bag of kettle chips. Came home, ripped open the bag, wolfed down two or three helpings.

Yeah.

I win. IwinIwinIwinIwin.

I don't know WHY I do that - there's NO sane reason why I'd pick up the chips. Except that just yesterday, my brother was telling his wife that the bag of kettle-cooked chips she bought was overpriced. So somehow I translated that to "Hey, *THIS* bag is cheap, so I have to get it!" ?????

Yep.

That's me all over.

Now we know why I look so cute and fluffy.

Not so FAST!

You ARE a worthy opponent, MAYA. Despite the fact that you, like Napoleon, have placed the crown on your own head, it looks like I'm also a strong contender. If you want to fvkk with falcons, you must learn to fly. I created this thread, and you're letting it make you want to eat. MuahhhhahhhhaHHHHHAAA! I'm so evil. I can barely stand it.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I shouldn't tell you this, but even your BEST friends can help you to sabotage yourself. You have to watch us like a hawk! (SUSAN, ask KOOPER to forgive all of these nasty bird references. I won't say anything about parrots. I promise, unless, of course, the subject of Margaritaville arises.)
emoticon emoticon emoticon

I have a friend who is doing one of those "Let's see who can lose the most weight this month" contests with her family. She's already trying to think of ways to make the others stumble. And I have a hunch they're plotting, too. Human nature.
emoticon emoticon emoticon

We can CHOOSE to outsmart them all. We don't HAVE TO fall for their evil deeds (whispering to self), not even by letting this thread make us eat.
emoticon emoticon emoticon

BTW, what were you thinking about at Johnny Rockets when you threw caution to the wind and decided consuming less was for the birds? If you can find the clue, you'll know how you fell prey, so that you can make some subtle changes and still have fun.

I win! I win!

Go read the other threads to see how I can sabotage a perfectly good day by giving in to impulses. First *I* talk my friends into coming to the mall when they weren't planning to. THEN I join them for dinner at Johnny Rockets. And proceed to totally ignore what's been working for me - Martha's 2-rule-diet. Sigh.

Almost 3k calories yesterday. Barely a half-hour of mall-walking. You think the scale will show an increase today? Yeah. DUH!

'kay.

So I get the crown, right? Huh? All that sabotage has to be good for SOMETHING!

emoticon emoticon emoticon

I'm gonna get off this thread QUICK. The longer I stay here, the more I wanna eat!

OK, SWIFTY, I apologize for implying that you were a piker at self-sabotage. I see that you DO have skills to fall back on, when you really want to compete.

You get extra points for having a RATIONALE.

SUSAN, you & I can definitely hold our own, too. The DH and I stayed home by the fire and watched the NY Times ball drop, too. I DID get 7 hrs of sleep, which will throw off my sabotage game. It's worth it, though. I feel rested and strangely clear-headed. Wow!

I'm so good at self-sabotage, I even have rationales for it, for why it isn't really sabotage. As I've been told way too many times, "I think too much." Still, I'm happy that I have this ability!

See?

Did everyone have as pleasant a New Year as I did? HAPPY 2010 ! !

My most SKILLED efforts at self-sabotage have usually revolved around some form of negativity. I would make a food choice that I immediately regretted and then TRY TO MAKE UP FOR IT WITH STARVATION, launching myself into the familiar vicious circle. Mistake----bashing self----unreasonable efforts to erase the mistake---hunger AND anxiety----another mistake---and round and round we go.

I have been working for months on breaking this habit, with positive self-talk and not trying to starve.

Procrastination is another self-sabotage technique where I like to think I was second to none. I am working on it.

Nightowl eating and too little sleep have also been handy weapons in my self-sabotage arsenal. I'm working on that one, too.
emoticon emoticon

I KNEW I had skills in the self-sabotage arena. I just had to FOCUS, so that I could remember. I'm sure there are others.

Others did their part, too. There's always someone around with treats to offer, along with their "friendly" advice, disguised as concern about my health, as if eating doughnuts is somehow equivalent to penicillin. What are people THINKING when they DO that?

Here's an article on defending against saboteurs, if you are interested in exploring further.
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutriti
on
_articles.asp?id=371

A grown daughter used to crawl in bed with me to watch movies, bringing heavily buttered (lots of hard to resist smells) popcorn with her. She also knew how to push my buttons, venting about every little issue in her life, helping me raise my anxiety level to "need comfort food" levels. We have both gotten past these behaviors, FINALLY.
emoticon
I stopped watching movies in bed when she's around. And I've convinced her to NOT vent around me, unless there's something I can DO to help. Venting for the joy of drama leaves me cold. It FEELS like someone dumping their problems on ME.

Oh, I have another one! Yesterday, not only did I leave the healthy lunch at home, but when I stopped at the grocery store on the way to work to compensate (*didn't* give in to the McMuffin, by the way!), I wound up with a bag of tortilla chips as WELL as the healthy "Simply Steam" and the okay single portion of Salisbury steak and gravy over garlic mashed potatoes.

So I had a healthy eating day and an unhealthy one at the same time. :)

Today that stupid little snot on the Wii is going to tell me I've gained. Grr. :)

Cheers,

Does it count when I pack my lunch, then leave it at home?

Or when I eat breakfast at home, then "get tempted" by a McMuffin on the way to work? :)

Sigh. The best laid plans of men and mice gang aft awry - when faced with foods we love! ;)

Cheers,
Maya

Share some details of your self-sabotage, as you think of them, SWIFTY-GIRL!

I think a LOT of us shoot ourselves in the foot from time to time. You'll have a hard time winning in THAT category.

We know that people will try, for whatever reason, to sabotage the self-improvement efforts of others. Sometimes we even sabotage OURSELVES.

Let's have some fun and pretend we're having a CONTEST to find the BEST SABOTEUR. What's the nastiest thing you've said or done, to sabotage yourself or your rivals? OR, if you want to nominate someone else for the BEST SABOTEUR TITLE, tell us what others have tried to do to YOU.

Let's hear some entries. Have you ever wanted to stick your foot out to trip a competitor in a race? WHO IS THE BADDEST?

All entries will be kept secret. No one will know but us.
