I'll look for some Mighty Leaf, KITPING. And the hours of sleep don't have to be consecutive, just all of them during the same night.

The serial killer is a useful image. Nice and dramatic. Gets a person's attention. I'll look forward to hearing the name of your inner stalking killer who wants to destroy you with food, CASSIES. If I were to give a name to mine, I'd have to call it the "BLT Killer", since I was fascinated by the "BTK Killer" story.

The compulsion a serial killer feels sounds very much like the compulsion I felt during the old "zombie-eating" days. I was out-of-control, watching myself overeat, powerless to stop. And I seriously used the serial killer comparison while learning to stop binge eating. It's an accomplishment that makes me proud and relieved (It took some time.)

When I would find myself in the persona of the serial killer, thinking obsessively about some food that I wanted to lay waste, I learned to stop thinking about it by telling myself something like "Stop. If you think about this, you risk having to sexually molest it, strangle it with a garrote and bury it under fresh cement in the basement."

I would smile at the outrageous thought, while, at the same time, understanding the inevitability of something regrettable happening, if I didn't quickly get my mind on something else. So, I would hasten to get involved in an activity that required my full attention. Gradually, I learned to shorten the warning to just the one word, "Stop".

Oh my goodness Barb, I love that serial killer reference. It is really food for thought (pardon the pun). Next time I start obsessing about food I will try to redirect that energy/thoughts/craving into another direction.

I will tell myself I am a serial killer who is stalking myself using food as a weapon.

Mmmmmmm...i have to think of a serial killer name...i'll be back with that one. emoticon

Mmm, tea. I love tea. Seriously, I would have left a trail littered with the bodies of irritating people without the calming influence of the daily cuppa. We tend to drink Mighty Leaf tea at home; they have some blends that are very good, and their Earl Grey is phenomenal. At work I drink Stash (usually lemon ginger or mint) or whatever I can scrounge. :)

I'm a little behind on the picking goals thing (I need to remember to check spark mail more often!) but I like the 600 minutes one, and I like the sleep one. ...Although if the sleep needs to be consecutive hours, I may be up the creek; my toddler is cutting molars and ain't no one in the house sleeping through the whole night while *that's* happening.

My favorite tea actually comes in bags. Celestial Seasonings make an herbal chai called Bengal Spice that's just amazing. It's slightly sweet without needing a sweetener and very cinnamon-y.

Good analogy Barbara!

Crystal Lite Peach is also good hot. I drink a steaming cup of that in the evening if I start to think about roaming around in the kitchen. It relaxes me. While I drink it, I either read or plan my next day's goals.

It's a good way to get my mind off food and keep me out of serial killer mode(or maybe cereal killer). I read that serial killers think so much about their target victims that their need to kill them gets unbearable and they have to do it. That's how I used to be with food at night.

Lipton makes the Green Tea & White Tea To Go packets that are flavored. I have one that Mandarin & Orange and it's very good. I don't like them too strong so I add one packet to a 1 liter bottle and drink that at my desk.

I drink a lot of plain water on it's own, but sometimes you just want to have a flavor. So I'll use one of the Crystal Light or Lipton water flavoring sticks for 2 times the amount of water recommended (for example they say use it for 16 ox - I'll use it for 32 oz) The flavor is there, just not as sweet. And then I'm content to drink the rest of my water!

Another thing I love in the summer is iced tea out of the herbal teas. Blueberry, cherry zinger, key lime are some of my favorites!

Good for you! I slept more than 30 minutes at a time last night so I'm pretty stoked too. I think the major stretch was about 2 hours but that's not outside my norm for sleeping. I'm a terrible sleeper. I sleep deeply but wake up every hour and a half or so. Most of the people in my family are the same. We all take about 9 hours to get 7 hours of actual sleep.

True Lemon & True Lime - there used to be a True Orange but it looks like they don't make it anymore.

Their website is pretty good and you can order online.

Oh, i've seen that. I think they have lemon too.

One thing I like to do is buy flavoring oil (the kind in tiny bottles you'd use to make candy not extracts) and put one drop in a large bottle of water. It adds flavor without calories. You have to be careful about flavor choices because some can be bitter without sugar but my faves are grapefruit, cherry and rootbeer.

Usually the oils are found in the baking aisle or in front of the pharmacy. Places that specialize in baking/candy making supplies carry the largest selection.

I'm taking notes water people. Thanks. Don't know why it's such a hardship for some, but I have a personal challenge/streak going and it's helping!

I also found something called True Lime in my grocery store. I think where flour & sugar type things are. Just a tiny sprinkle and the water tastes like lime - great when no limes are in the house. It's helping a lot! It doesn't have sugar in it or bad stuff as far as I can tell.

I'll try the hot water w/lemon in the morning. Thanks!

The crushed ice is a really good idea. I take water bottles with me everywhere, too. I got in the habit of doing that because I would be out of breath and panting in dance classes and a drink of water would help me breathe.

I used to freeze the water bottles. They would thaw as the day progressed and my water would always be cold. Then, I got concerned about freezing the plastic bottles.

Sometimes I drink hot water with lemon and a bit of sweetener for breakfast, instead of tea or coffee.

Well, I was using up vicodin 5/5's and taking 2 of them at a time. He called me in 7.5/7.5's so, while they're stronger I can actually take just one so I'm getting less. It's making progress anyway. Still... that walk to the bathroom seems really long. LOL

i go through phases on drinking water. Sometimes I drink almost all water or plain iced tea but mostly I'm still a diet soda junkie.

As mentioned below, here's my secret to drinking lots of water... except that I have no idea. I'm just a thirsty gal and always have been. Sorry...

Many years back we quit regular soda cold turkey and went diet, but I never really came to love it, so I drink very little soda now - I drink about a third and give the rest to hubby. I do drink iced tea from time to time and I count that as water. I take a 20 oz reusable bottle with me EVERYWHERE. I get water instead of tea or soda at restaurants (it's also cheaper). But mostly I just CRAVE plain, cold water. That's something too - I like it very cold or with crushed ice. I drink even more if I use crushed ice.

What worked for hubby - he hated water - was the 5 calorie Crystal Lite packets. He would have a flavored water instead of diet soda, and eventually began drinking water plain, too.

Good luck!

Walking on crutches tends to engage your upper body and core more than simple walking does. You purposely are hunched over trying to gain two legs in the process so you are doing all sorts of contortions there.

Similar to Swiss ball exercise idea. Just in this case it's walking. :)

And if you're having complications from medication causing you to have balance issues on top of it all, you are getting a bonus to your workout.

Just be bloody careful about the walkabout if you are that sensitive to those vici's.

LOL, ironically, I'm afraid of taking vicodin because of the addictive potential. You know it was bad if I broke it out. I also don't like the random bouts of head spinning that it causes. I'll be typing along and then suddenly it's WHEE! Like riding a merry-go-round.

I slept last night but mostly in 30-60 minute increments. That's how long the cryo-cuff takes to lose it's cold and need refilled.

The good news is that I;m not hungry. I worried that I'd crave lot of junk but today i've had an egg sammy for breakfast and a Lean Cuisine panini for lunch. Don't know if walking on crutches counts as exercise but it's definitely a cardio event. I'm usually sweating after my little trips.

Hi everyone! Just checking in to let you know that my surgery went very well. The first pain med he gave me wasn't strong enough but I called in and talked to him. I had some vicodin left over from my cracked ankle (the local hospital hands them out like M&M's) and he told me to try that and if it worked better then he'd call me in some. It's MUCH better! i'm going to have him call me in a few more tomorrow and I'd guess that by Wed or Thurs I can go back to the first pain med which doesn't make my head spin.

I'm keeping iced and elevated and hopefully will get some sleep tonight.

To take advantage of our enthusiasm about Team Goals, I have used the input that I have received so far as guidance in posting the following June Goals. This will get us started while we continue to discuss any revisions we'd like to see for July.
You can participate in all of them, or just a few. It's up to you. The object is to get healthy, together.

**Submit OR vote for 1 Team Goal Idea 1 time per month
**Do 600 minutes of fitness activities per month
**Get 7 hours of sleep per day
**SUPPORT YOURSELF: Be nice to yourself! 1 "Kind Word" or "Reward" 1 time per day
**SUPPORT OTHERS: Post an encouraging comment on another person's blog or SparkPage. 1 post per day

Please continue to post your opinions about Team Goals here. We can make any changes that the majority of you would like to make.

We can also talk about how we're doing as individuals, our small victories and any difficulties where we could use help achieving these goals.

I like the idea of a word of support for another one time/day and one for yourself as well. I vote for that (and water, and exercise, and can't remember my other one).

Just my last week since joining this group I have really felt SO much enthusiasm and motivation. I was a bit stuck and now things are happening. This is a great team.

Our team goals last one month right? So maybe you could go ahead and pick the ones NOW for June...then more people will have time to input for July??? Or is it too late for June? Or do we keep the goals longer than a month?? Here I go again...corn-fused.

I saw this on one team:
"Burn 300 Calories per day"
How does that sound?

Here are two interesting "Custom Goals" from another team:
"SUPPORT YOURSELF: Be nice to yourself 1 time per day" (to overcome negative self-talk & pessimism--can include things like rewards, affirmations)
This is something I do, and it is saving me from a world of hurt.

"SUPPORTING OTHERS: Post a supportive comment on one other person's blog or SparkPage 1 post per day"

Thanks for the link, PENGUIN. Good information.

600 minutes per month divided by 30 is 20 minutes per day. That's less than 5 minutes more daily than the 500 minutes would be. I think the 600 makes sense, too.

Count me in for 600 minutes exercise/week

Also, one of my other teams has a goal of leaving an encouraging comment for someone new once a day. I like that one for myself, so I'll throw that out there.

I would like to vote for the number of fitness minutes per month, but I want to make a case for it being 600 rather than 500. With 4 weeks (and some change I'm ignoring) in a month, that allows for 150 minutes per week, which meets the physical activity guidelines recommendations for all Americans. I know people who were involved in writing these guidelines, and the science basis is impeccable. Although any exercise is good, there is compelling evidence for health benefits increasing substantially at 150 per week.

The guidelines alternatively say 75 minutes per week if it's vigorous exercise, so we could theoretically meet the guidelines while staying at 500 minutes per month, provided that some of the time is spent in vigorous activity.

Just a suggestion.

I'll let you all vote this thing out. I get to have my first of 2 foot surgeries on Monday morning at some ridiculous hour. I'll probably be done and on my way home by the time I'm normally up and eating breakfast. LOL

My personal goals for this month are to improve my eating habits which have really slipped lately and to do as much upper body and core workout as I can handle.

JAZZIEGIRL, this is where you vote.

To get a SparkPoint for voting, go to the Team Goal area in the middle of this page. Click on "Track Goal". That will cause a box to appear under "Other Goals" on your "View SparkPoints" page. Check that box each time you vote, whether it's once a month, or more often.

I'm excited about this project. It's interesting to hear what changes others are making. We can swap stories to help each other out. People like LALA & STEPH who find drinking the water easy, can tell us how they made that happen, for example.

Water is an easy one for me too, so my votes are for 500 fitness minutes per month and for 7-8 hours of sleep per day.

Thanks for all you do Boo!

water is an easy one for me. I always drink plenty. I have trouble with exercising enough and staying within my calorie range. I also need to focus on sodium intake. That one is really, really hard. So any of those would be good for me.

ha ha! That is the exact look on my face somewhere around the 3rd glass of H2O!

My votes:
Water
Fitness minutes (plus calories would be grand...maybe 3000????)
Sleep

Do we vote here? Or somewhere else too? I'm feeling like a bear of very little brain, but not sure where we enter the info.

Thanks for the motivation!

You can choose MORE than one, JAZZIEGIRL.
We may end up with FOUR more, since we already have one and 5 is the max. If we do that, people can choose to do all 5, or just their favorites.

I struggle with the water intake, but I am on a 2-day streak. That one gets my vote if i must chose one, but they're ALL good!

Yes, we can change the range. Sleep is a big one for me, too. There are all kinds of reasons why I need healthier sleep habits.

I like the others, too, and I would be up for any of them. It helps to know our team has another sleep-deprived maniac (no offense, I'm joking) besides me.

Now, let's go click on "Track Goals" to create a box under "Other Goals" on our "View Your SparkPoints" page so we can put a check mark there and earn our SparkPoint for voting. That'll get our team graph moving.

Hi Barbara - I read your Sparkmail and just wanted to suggest that we change the sleep goal to a range rather than a hard 8 hours of sleep. The suggested amount is 7-8 hours - could we do that? I know I need help with that a lot!

I liked all the other ones too - so not much help am I?
