You're welcome... I'm watching again right now. When it's finished another about open mindedness starts automatically... it's so far very good... back to the vid..

Ooh. *Thank* you, Blue! That was a FINE video! How come I've never seen it before? LOL!

Okay, then, that was almost better than the sheepies! Almost, I said.

I like the new vocabulary I'm learning: horizontal prayer! :)

Cheers,
Maya

I've been lurking for a few days - just saw the sheepie vid - THANK YOU! That was one of the funniest things I'd seen, and I have to admit I thought you were commenting on how religion makes sheep of people! :)

Sadly, I can't watch the other one, because the firewall has been setup to NOT allow tinyurl.com links. Sigh. One of these days, I'll fix that - apparently too much malware was getting through there!

Cheers,
Maya

I liked the "Baaaa-Stud" video, BLUE. I was impressed that you were letting your hair down, discussing prayer and sheep in the same post.

In fairness, I also liked the other one. Watching it, I felt a "glimmer" of hope, though we all have a ways to go before religion or its absence can bring us together.

Tolerance and open-mindedness is a 2-way street. It's hard to take a step toward the other side when I feel bullied by the insistence that I am wrong to believe differently and that it's their way, or the highway.

It seems, though, that those on "God's Team", who often outnumber the others, like they did at the SparkPeople potluck JEN attended with her son, MISS THE OPPORTUNITY to CELEBRATE OUR ONENESS. It's sad. How much more powerful it would have been to have left their prayer a more private matter(vertical--straight to the big guy) and welcome EVERYONE with open arms, with one less barrier.

I'm sorry, JEN, that it became necessary for you to go to the playground and to do it with enough grace that they didn't take note and punish you for it. SparkPeople is great and it COULD be even greater.

That was a great article. Thanks for posting! (I'm at work, so I'll have to watch the video tonight).

I found myself subjected to horizontal prayer at a local SP picnic yesterday. Normally I would just stand there quietly until they were done with their thing, but I had my 2.5 year old with me and I was not about to have the "what are those people doing" discussion with him in the middle of that group. So we headed off to the playground until I noticed people were eating.

I wonder why it is so hard for them to realize that not everyone wants to participate. Ugh. Frustrates me to no end.

I love the phrase "the horizontal devout". And I DO feel excluded (and angry) when events are begun with public prayer.

I read the first article aloud to my husband because I agree with so much of it. Now, while I'm trying to think, he's sitting here watching TV, babbling about "the taxpayer's carpet" being over the top, bordering on playing the victim . He says he has almost as much trouble with "fundamentalist atheists" as he does "fundamentalist evangelicals". I thought he would like Ebert's blog since Baha'i (what he is) was mentioned.

I have no experience with "fundamentalist atheists", though I can't imagine they could bother me as much as "fundamentalist evangelicals" do. I didn't even know there were different kinds of atheists until a quiz labelled me a "spiritual" atheist.

I'm going to read the other article now.
