So the basic idea of measuring intensity is good, but it's like 'Biggest Loser' ... how many calories you'll burn is not only a measure of the activity but your own weight. All else being equal, a heavier person will burn more calories than a lighter person.

It could be measured as calories per pound, which would put everyone on equal footing with respect to their weight. Then it becomes purely a function of the activity.

We could go in a different direction....just challenge ourselves. Commit to a certain number of fitness minutes/calories to be burned for the week and get points if we meet/exceed the goal. We can take go through our fitness page and figure out what our average is and add 10% (or 20%).
I guess what I really want is to challenge myself to do better but be held accountable by posting the effort/result.

In terms of assigning points for intensity, I thought that we could assign points based on calories burned instead of minutes. That way, sprinting for 30 minutes might be about the same calories burned as walking for 2 hours. Just a thought - I may be wrong on that one...

I think we lost a ton of people because some of us (cough, cough) became too competitive and people didn't like it. Oops. We're down to 4 or 6 but I think we started with about 12 or 16.

I can temper my trash talking on the next one :).

Being selfish... I'd love to see you start the new challenge right away, and finish it right after New Years. (I'll be gone from 12/15 for two weeks.) If you do, I'll know what it is, and try to participate despite not being able to get on-line and chat about it or know how the competition is doing. emoticon
If the challenge ended after the Holidays, and another one started right back up... I'm in again. Otherwise, you know me, I'll just jump in anyway.

I'm voting for a day or two of rest each week. Being politically correct, my body needs it. Truth...My workload starts to get pretty heavy, leaving less room to get in 7-days (60+ mins) of cardio.

Keep in the water... I still need to be held accountable. I slipped between challenges, and will likely do the same again. (Remember, I'm half camel.)

PS: Wonder what the other SP team members want, that aren't always duking it out like the 4-5 of us are? Do we need to add other things in... like Random Acts of Kindness, ME Time, or Family Time (2/wk = 10 pts each)? (I stole these ideas from another challenge... no original thoughts here.)

Well, being that I seem to have the "sweat simply from breathing" gene in me, I can't say I miss sweating. But there is a definite difference between 90 minutes at 15% incline and 4 mph on the treadmill and walking around my neighborhood (which is as flat as you can get) for 90 minutes with my wife at at 3.5 mph clip. Which is what I was doing for a while when my energy was just zapped.

I'm not really sure how one would take intensity into account, because intensity varies directly with a person's fitness, but I think - like 2 challenges ago - if we could get points on "rest" days (again, maybe 1-2 each week), that would give everyone the recommended rest that we all need and let us do the intense cardio the remaining days without fear of collapsing :-)

Throwing a few more of my cents in ...

Alan

Honestly I never even thought that people wouldn't take a day off. You guys are just more competetive than I am I guess :) It will definately be addressed in the next challenge.

I was thinking too that the 90 mins a day that most of us are trying to get in every day means that I mostly have low intensity cardio workouts. I have 2 or 3 a week that are higher intensity but to keep up with 60 - 90 mins/day I've really had to do alot more low intensity. What I'm trying to say is that I miss sweating. Can this be something that's addressed in the challenge? Do others feel the same way?

I'm ready for another challenge whenever you're ready to start it. I would ask that any new challenge that includes exercise, allows for a rest day or 2 each week. I've gotten my 2nd wind and am chugging along with my daily cardio, but I'm pretty sure its actually healthier for me to take a day or 2 off each week.

I agree with the quality of foods should be considered also BUT ... I still prefer my veggies in the form of low sodium V8. Lack of fiber (and more salt than fresh veggies) aside, it's still veggies - and it just is one other form of hydration besides all that water!!

Just my 2 cents (which are probably worth nothing in today's economy :-)

Getting more veggies and fruits in our diet sounds good. I know I ate more fruits when it was part of the challenge (don't have a problem with veggies).

Could we take a break for a week and start a new one right before xmas?

I was thinking that we need some help focusing on the quality of the calories that we are taking in. I still go some days without putting a veggie in my mouth. Something like you get points for whole foods low on the food chain and you get negative points for processed foods. Just a thought!

Do you guys and gals want me to start another challenge right away to get you through the Holidays or do you want a break? I can work on something to start the 15th (day after the current challenge ends) if you like. Let me know so I can start thinking!
