I find strength in reading these posts.
One day at a time. I went to work today. Was hard when mom called upset and I was not there.
Housework and yard work is going to have to wait. I am needed in other ways.

I will need support..yesterday my dad died suddenly. I have arrangements and such. He was 80 and a runner. Had just gotten back from a run/walk. My mom found him, but it was too late. He has been like a father to my kids as they lost their father(my husband 8 years ago) Everyone is coming in and I will try to drink my water and walk. do not know how I can be on SP but will try as this has been wonderful for me in getting healthy. thanks

Nee Nee -

Many of us have gone through this type of 'slump'. You are doing the right thing - reaching out for support.

You are about 7-8 weeks into this journey I believe - it is SO normal at this point to have these feelings...

Remember you have over 10,000 people on this team that want to see you succeed!!!!

Nee-Nee, I was faced with a similar situation at work. I chose to hold my head high, I chose to not let her have the control. When we allow someone else affect how we feel and our day, they have control. It hurts inside of us, but I decided, I chose to move on and not let it affect how I was going to feel that day!

When we only focus on what that pesky scale is saying we are not allowing ourselves to focus on ALL of the changes our bodies are going through...sometimes it is an emotional or mental battle we have been fighting also - so find all of those victories to celebrate!

I just learned that under your start page where you weigh in you can keep track of your measurements. So I just measured myself and typed it in. Even though gained 5 pounds my clothes are alittle looser. I hope I am loosing a inch or two. My neighbor told me I look alittle thinner.

Do you think that by working out we are toning up and that helps us look thinner? I know that there have been times that I have gained, but my fat clothes are starting to feel loose. Any thoughts?

Good for you Nee-Nee. I stopped drinking with my friends too (well as much, I still go out occasionally) so I know how hard that is. Great job choosing yourself over what your friends want!

Thankyou for the advice. I have told my family to hide the treats from me and their more than happy to. My sister has just confessed that there was a cheesecake in the house the other day and she hid that in her room away from me because she knows I'm on a diet and she knows how much I love cheesecake! That really is good advice!

WOW JNNSALAS....Love your visualizations...Very, very good advice..Im going to start using those when I struggle...

I have the same struggle with my family, especially my mom and grandmother. They want me to eat constantly even though I try to tell them NO, but it doesnt help. My grandmother thinks that if I dont eat a 7 course meal that I will starve. She sits and will list several things that she will fix for me. I have found that I have to get a little forceful with them so they will stop hounding me. After a few times of putting my foot down, they will stop at least for a few hours. I just think they dont understand what we go through...

You are a strong woman! You can do this! My first thought is let everyone in your family know your goals - they are more likely to want to support you in this and maybe might not bring it in the house. If that doesn't work, insist that they be kept out of sight and in a cupboard you don't open often. Lastly, try visualization. One of my goals is to avoid lifestyle diseases. When I think of cookies, I try to think of the butter cloggling my arteries, the processed white flour stuck like glue in my intestines, and the sugar screwing with my insulin levels. It makes me think - "I don't want that in my body".

HELP! I seem to be slipping up daily recently. My mum n dad have bought a lot of biscuits, chocolate etc into the house recently for my brother and sister. And when it's in the house I just can't help myself. I don't have the willpower to look at a packet of biscuits and say no! What should I do?

Thanks again Jenn.........I am beginning to learn so much about myself and "dieting". Losing weight is not so much "dieting" as it is "life changing" and "reprograming". Im learning it goes way beyond just the food I choose to eat....It is so much easier having help along the way...

I have the binging problem sometimes too. I find what helps is to go for a quick walk, or throw in an exercise DVD or something. Sometimes I get my daughter to sing with me or play a game or something or just sit and post online. Anything to take my mind off the food. I know it doesn't always work, but these are just a couple tricks. Maybe try putting a closed sign on your kitchen?

Ah! Help!

I'm falling off the wagon once again. It's like clockwork, week two/three and I start getting "cravings" or a slip a bit, and let my all or nothing attitude get the best of me.

The past few days have been awful. I go on these outrageous binges. I'm aware of what my binge triggers are, and I'm aware of when I am binging, but I just can't do anything to stop. Does anyone have that problem? I sometimes feel like I'm so alone in that respect. Sure people overeat every once in a while, but I outright binge. It's like bulimia, without the throwing up part. I don't even enjoy what I'm eating, I just do it, to fill some void that I can't quite pinpoint.

Anyway, I don't really know where this is going. I just needed to vent. And maybe by admitting to my compulsive binging, someone might notice and help me stay on track. Provide some accountability. I thought the challenge would help do that, but clearly I still think I can get away with binging.

Thanks to everyone for the awesome encouragement! You are all awesome! JENN suggested that I review the menu before, pick something out, and then not look at the menu when I got there. GREAT IDEA - why didn't I ever think of that. Unfortunately, I got JENN's message as I was headed out the door.

I did have a very successful dinner. The trick that I discovered was ORDER FIRST. That way, you won't be tempted when your dinner partner orders the blue cheese bacon burger with fries :)

In retrospect, I think that's the mistake I made the night before. I was the last to order and literary everyone ordered these super decadent meals. It all sounded so good I was crazy rabid by the time it was my time to order.

Eating half and leaving the rest on my plate is a good suggestion although I'm such a clean plate person that the food on the plate just taunts me. Instead, I plan to order really healthy (like I did last night) or I'll have them box up 1/2 in the kitchen.

Thanks again to everyone... I will try not to abuse the Panic Button thread but I will use it when I feel like I really need it.

xo

I would love some help with trying to figure out how to navigate through this.....I am doing the reading, posting, and mini goals, but do not know how to begin tracking food, exercise, find a meal planner. I have been used to following a diet like Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers....I just don't know how this all works......Help, please.... emoticon

Jnnsalas,
eating out is difficult. The fact that you are trying and know that it is hard is a small step. Just do not eat your whole portion. Just say you are full and leave it at that. Drink lots of water instead of pop or a drink. hang in there tomorrow is another day.
You can do it and are. emoticon

I need a pep talk! I went out to eat for the first time since I joined SP last night and I kind of blew it. Not crazily but I went over my calorie range, fat, and sodium for the day. I've been feeling crappy about that all day. I know it's only one day and all but I feel down that I would do that.

I just found out today that I have to entertain a client tonight and eat out AGAIN. The client chose the place: cheeseburger in paradise!!! This is a VERY tempting place for me.

One of the most important things to remember is to not compare yourself to others in weight loss. Everyone is different and we lose at different rates. You just have to hang in there. Take me as an example. A lot of the people I started with in January are at their goals already. I have thyroid issues and have a REALLY hard time losing, no matter how good I am. I just keep trudging along, knowing that I am living a more healthy lifestyle than I used to. My blood pressure has gone down so I know I am doing something good for myself. Keep at it and know you are doing well!

I haven't really lost much either. I think that some people include the weight they lost before they joined Sparks? But we are definitly all getting healthier.

Hi..do not worry I am down .5 or maybe a pound. I have been really good food and exercising. sometimes the fat you have turns into muscle and that weighs more. I do say I do feel better..more energy.
Hang in there, it will happen. emoticon

Hi, after looking at all your tickers i've noticed that everyone seems to have lost much more weight than I have, which is strange considering we all started the same week! I have kept within my calorie range and I've been exercizing like mad! Does anyone know where I'm going wrong? Please help!

Claire, maybe you can get a container to go and take half for lunch the next day. That way it is not wasted and you spread the calories out for two meals. Hang in there you can figure it out.

I don't know much about low carb diets except I hear they aren't sustainable. If you count calories and get all your nutrients in, that is a more sustainable lifestyle change. I have read how carbs are very important for brain function, so personally, I wouldn't cut them too low.

As far as losing that last 10 pounds, just keep doing what you are doing. If you aren't doing strength training, add that. It will help tone you up and will also make muscle that will burn the fat even when you aren't working out.

I also tend to be one of those people who starves. I am doing pretty well these days, but am just feeling a little uncomfortable with myself. I feel that I have very reasonable expectations (at least, I am trying to!), but I am really not sure where the proper place to begin is.

I already eat fairly well, so this is for tweaking, and generally get to the gym 4 days per week, so any thoughts on the 10 lbs I want to drop to be at my comfortable weight?

I am having a little trouble getting started. I am one of those people who think they have to starve in order to lose weight. I have so much to lose I don't know where to start. Is a low carbohydrate diet a good one to follow or should calorie counting what I should be focusing on right now. emoticon

I agree with Katie. They need to respect your wishes. Ask to serve your own food or show them how much you want. If you haven't told your family your goals, you may want to because it may help (although I know in some families it doesn't work that way!) You may even be able to help them start eating healthier as well :) Good luck!

Claire, just tell them how it is. You would prefer smaller portions, so that you don't waste food. If they won't listen, then dish your own!
My family never minds if you leave a little food on your plate as long as you ate a good amount of it... but better to take a smaller portion in the first place.

What did you mean by "making them suspicious"? Maybe if you explain to them WHY you want smaller portions (a weight goal, fitness goal, etc) they will be a helpful addition to your support system. emoticon

I need help! I live with my parents and we tend to eat together. Also, they dont like it if anyone leaves too much on thier plate so I find that i'll have a really good day and then ill ruin it all with a huge dinner.
I tell them to give me smaller portions but generally they ignore me and I end up eating a huge amount of my daily calories because of that.
Does anyone have any idea's on how I can eat less without making them suspicious??

Jenn is right on - your body goes into starvation mode and won't allow the release of weight because it is concerned about where it's next fuel is coming from.

It seems crazy to be trying to lose weight and HAVE to eat enough to do it - but I've seen it work! I have even had to go over the top end to push my body to lose those pounds once in a while...

Remember to take in to consideration your exercise too - if you exercise too much and don't put that into your tracker info so the calorie range can be adjusted, it is the same as being in starvation mode....

Change is whats hard, but its change that will reveal all the wonders that life has to offer

You could actually gain weight from not eating enough calories. You can put your body into starvation mode when it doesn't get enough to run basic functions. You start breaking down muscle instead of fat.

Check out some of these resources which will explain it a little better (and don't forget your spark points!)
