Coffeediva, A 5K is 3.2 miles long. And my son troy is in 3rd grade also. He dosen't run he walks it with me. But my oldest will run way ahead of me.

Thanks, Kim, for sharing details. Jeff and I talked about running 5Ks last night. He wondered how long it was in miles (he's a 3rd grader and they haven't learned how to convert those distances yet!) He says he thinks he could run 2 miles, and I told him he (and I!) have to do a little bit better than that.

there was a few 5K's going on this past month but I couldn't do any of them due to to much going on in my family. But I also have a son who loves to run but I could never keep up with him. He wants to run track. He's 15 and I am 39 But my 8 year old did do a 5K back in April for earth day. It took us 63 min. So if they have one again next year we are going to work on being faster.

I'm going to check out the Couch to 5K program. My son is quite interested in running lately -- he feels he is an endurance runner, not a sprinter (like me!) So maybe we can train together, and run our first 5K together too! He's 8, I'm almost 48 -- but what the heck!

Have you run at all and just not the 5k or not at all? I just completed the Couch to 5K program 1 month ago and just signed up for a 5k on 11/1. I have been running the 3.1 miles for the last 2 weeks and my best time was on the treadmill at 42:12, although my outside time was 48:38. The course I registered for is a flat course(according to the website), so hopefully I'll be closer to the 42:12, but I'll take either one.
I recommend definitely doing at least SOME running before the race if you've never done the distance before, and if you've NEVER run, I would plan to walk at least part of the 5k, if not all of it. Just my opinion of course.

Wow, Kim! Good for you!! I just ran my first one in August. Let me tell ya--I was SO nervous at first (my heart was beating so fast even when I signed up--online at home...lol!). And when the race began I was thinking 'What the heck did I get myself into?!' But I reeaally enjoyed it and would love to do it again (once things slow down a bit for me).

I ran it one week prior to the actual race to see how I would do and to become familiar with the trail. I did pretty darned good for my first race. I posted in my blog about it.

It just felt so good to actually accomplish something that I've never done before and that I said that I wanted to do. Never in my life did I think I would be running--and enjoy it!!

I wish you the best and will be cheering for you!!

I registered for a 5K today! It will be Oct. 26.

Does anyone have any advice on getting ready? Should I try to run the whole distance prior to the race? Or let that be the first time I've done that much?

I know some of you have been 5King and I love to hear how it's going and any tips.

Thanks!
