When eating out, try to go to restaurants that allow subsitution. Eg. Today, I went to Greek restaurant and didn't think to ask until after I ate about sustituting the fries for more salad. I found out I could. That's good to know for next time.
Also even though I had fries, I just ate a few. I felt good with myself afterwards.

SCOTT_ERIN, it's your birthday! Don't worry so much about the food being good for you, but rather that it'll be something you enjoy! It's not going to kill you to eat out. One day over your calorie limit won't be the end of the world. You don't have to eat all the food in front of you either. Just enjoy yourself! You deserve a treat!

LINDAJUNE3, moderation is key! Don't avoid Mexican food if you love it! Just try ordering something smaller, or something where you can control the portion size, and what goes into it. Like Fajitas. That way you control how much meat goes in, if sour cream, guacamole, or cheese goes in (and how much) and can make it much healthier for yourself. That's what I do!

Hope this helps!

We were invited out to eat after lunch yesterday. We went to mexican food which I absolutely love. I ordered a taco, enchilada and refried beans. It was very tasty but when I got home I found I had eaten almost 800 calories! I was so bad yesterday I had cookies at church. I ate high fat and I was over my cholestrol amount and I didn't get enough vegetables and fruit even though I did eat some of that at home. should I just avoid mexican food all together or is their something healthy? I think from now on we need to go to a restaurant that has a light and eating right menu. linda

When I go to the chain restaurants, I don't get tempted by any of the other foods. I enjoy what I order, and am satisfied with that, and that I made a smart choice of something tasty, yet healthy. I would think an Italian restaurant would be torturous to some people, with the smell of spaghetti and pizza. Again, it wouldn't be for me, for the same reasons as stated above. I do agree it's good to know ahead of time what is a smart choice. If I have enough notice, I always do my "homework" before going to a new restaurant. I keep a list of restaurants in my purse, which tells me the low cal, healthy meals for each, just in case. I don't really need it much anymore, because I've gotten familiar with the good choices.

Do your homework. Stop by a restaurant and look over their menu if they don't have nutritional information online. Last night I had an unexpected invite out for dinner, but fortunately had a choice of where we went. I choose a family owned Italian restaurant where I knew that had an excellent Chicken Spinach Salad made with fresh ingredients, broiled chicken breast, and several options of dressings, including oil and vinegar which I like as can regulate. I knew what I could order there and so didn't even have to think about it -- which is less tempting than reading down the menu. I have several other restaurants where I know what I can order, but usually stay away from chains where the smell of Fried Foods is in the air. Way too much temptation. Why do that to yourself?

Its not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not.

I like to go to Ruby Tuesday because they have a smart eating menu: www.rubytuesday.com/menu/smartEating

TGI Friday's also has a small section of entrees that are all around the 500 calorie range. I couldn't find an online listing, but this gives you some idea:

Chili's has a "Guiltless Grill:" www.chilis.com/menu/default.asp?catI

Red Lobster has a Lighthouse Menu, you have to enter your zip code:

I can only give you ideas for the chain restaurants I like, since I don't know what other options you have available. I hope this helps and happy birthday!
