There's lots of tasty whole grains out there! I love quinoa, and have been known to have quite a few others around as well, such as spelt. Its another world when you try different ones.

Hi Silence,

I am new here as well and certainly don't know all, but having yo yo'd my weight up to 256 I have learned a few do not's, one of which is low carb. You do loose quick, but feel deprived especially if you like bread.
With a family history of diabetes I need to get my eating habits on track, and have done a lot of reading. It is hard to cut everything at once. As for carbs, avoid foods made with refined white flour (white bread, pasta etc.) use whole grain, and whole wheat as alternatives. They are also higher in fibre and "flush" toxins out of your body easier. White flour is assumed to be "sugar" by the body.

Pasta usually measures similar whether it's cooked or uncooked (i measure in cups, not weight, though). I've been measuring dry pasta and only cooking the servings that I'm going to eat (if there's no more, i can't have seconds). Once it's cooked, I measure it again to make sure I'm not eating too much...usually the cooked pasta is maybe 1 or 2 noodles over, if that.

To clarify low carb diets: Someone asked about SP providing low-carb diets as a choice in their given meal plans. SP does NOT do that. They DO have teams that do low-carb and I am sure they are a great resource if that is what your dr determined is best for you.

As for exercise vs calories, I go back to my start page and update my current goals, exercise burning, etc. once in a while.

What I sometimes do (since I don't have a scale yet) is look at how many servings the label says it serves and then determine approximately how much is a portion from that.

I second what THISISCHARITY said about entering my own. I find that it is more accurate. As for the cooked/uncooked question, I base my measurements on uncooked pasta. Sometimes it will tell you on the box, but if not I just use the measurements for uncooked.

Thanks- that is what I did. I love the Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta. It is great. But I wonder how do you measure how much you eat- dry or cooked? I can only measure ounces based on a measuring cup. What does everyone else use???

Elizabeth, it could also vary on what kind of pasta the site uses as a reference I guess. I've taken to manually entering all of my food since it will be more accurate since I'm using the specific nutritional values on the label of the food I'm actually using. Since I generally buy the same brands for each ingredient, it's only a lot of extra work right now and when I have it again, I've got it stored in my favorites to pull up quickly.

Hi all, this is a little off topic but I am very confused tonight. I just put in information about Pasta- I noticed on the nutrition list- on the website it has cooked pasta, 8 oz is only about 300 calories, but an average box of pasta has 2 oz at 200 (which would make 8 oz about 1600!). Is this the difference between cooked and uncooked? I am not sure if this is correct. Thanks.

Silence, I would also go by what the doctor recommended (as difficult as that may be). I would also take into account how much I am exercising each day. There are a lot of healthy choices that could really make those calories count for you--things that will fill you up and keep you satisfied. You can never go wrong with fruits and veggies. Grains help to give you fiber and helps you to stay fuller longer.

I would also have to agree that writing things down (keeping a food journal) would be VERY helpful. When I keep a journal I stay on track. I found that I started to go off track when I stopped journaling. It keeps you accountable AND helps you to see how much you are really taking in. You'd be surprised sometimes!

Alicia, I am having the exact same problem- I am exercising a lot more and so I feel constantly hungry- 1500 calories is not doing it for me, and it shouldn't when I'm burning 700 a day right? How do I fix this in my calorie recommendations?

How/when does SP change the recommended caloric requirements based on exercise goals?

When I signed in initially, I listed 3 days a week for exercise. SP used this to determine my daily caloric requirements. I have done more than that this week. The fitness page told me that I should update my fitness goals so that this would be reflected in my recommended calorie range. I did so, but my recommended calorie range didn't change.

Thanks in advance!

Alicia

I would probably just follow the doctor's advice... as difficult as that might be. The good news is the less sugar you eat, the less you crave sugar. (I assume this works for carbs, etc. as well.)

In solidarity I am going to cut sugar from my diet for 2 weeks. (I am a candy-holic, so this is no slight feat.) I encourage everyone to make the break from their food addictions today.

You can do it Silence!

Silence...don't diet! I've know a handful of people that have failed major on low carb diets. They lose this miracle 20 pounds and the first time they cave they put that 20 pounds right back on. I highly recommend just making a life change of eating healthy!! For the first couple of months I wrote down in a journal everything I ate. Every drink I put into my body and it really made me accountable for what I was doing. Good luck with your journy!!

Really? I went to the Community section and did a team search using "low carb" as the parameter and it came back with a LOT of teams that are low-carb, including one for low-carb vegetarians (I have no idea how that would be done, but since I'm not a vegetarian I don't suppose it matters).

SP doesn't do low carb diets as they aren't healthy, so you won't find that on here. Tracking your food is honestly the best way. More info on carbs: www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutriti

I knew they all existed, but found them by going to the top of my page and entering in key words like portion, carbs, sex.

After a "mild coronary event" my doctor has indicated that I MUST lose the extra weight. However, the food plan he has given me would not sate an anorexic chipmunk. So, I am in search of a diet that allows me to not be hungry and not have to worry about keeping strict records of what I eat.

I have heard that the low-carb diet does this, but I don't know where to get information about it. Is there information about it on this website somewhere? or does someone here know of a website where this information is available free?

I tell you the truth if I have to go hungry or measure weigh and write everything that I eat I shall certainly stay fat.

i have a question about serving sizes. when serving sizes are given in weights (ie meat) it's difficult for me to estimate how much i am eating. i have read that 3oz of meat is approximately the size of a deck of cards? i want to be able to count my calories as accurately as possible. does anyone have any useful tips in this area? also, is it possible to buy a food scale for this purpose? and are they expensive?

REALLY silly and embarrassing question:

Does sex count as aerobic activity? How many calories does it burn? How can I record it to get "credit" for working out? I mean, I'm not talking "hanging from the chandeliers" active ... but also, it's a lot more vigorous than "lie back and think of England..."

I can't beleive that I'm asking this! emoticon

Have a question? What better place to ask it then over a healthy dinner in the dining room! Ask away, and if someone doesn't have an answer, Shay or Stephanie will find it.
