Eva - I too have given up trying to use my phone for Spark - glad your modem is up and running.
Take care with the emoticon 5" alone can create hazards. It's hard to fathom 50"...
I hope your school administrators will use good judgment and let the kids (and their folks) stay safe.
It will be interesting to hear about the freight - I had to look up the company and considering their location, there may be some salvageable freight. We @ least can hope so...

I am almost feeling guilty about the fabulous weather we have.

It's rare to have such temperatures in August, but I took advantage of them today.
There's an whining noise in the emoticon in the morning when I'm not pressing the gas and coasting downhill, so I decided to get the tires rotated in the hopes that will fix the problem. Since the store is just down the street, I can drop off the vehicle and walk to (and from) the office.
emoticon It was almost emoticon like and a definite blessing. Keep your fingers crossed the 'noise' will disappear!

Sorry I was a no show yesterday. I had to spark from my phone and the page is a night mare on my phone. My internet was down for almost 12 hours. They messed up an upgrade that cost all of us with a particular modem that much down time.

I'm bracing for flash flooding. I look for schools to be let out early tomorrow, possibly today. And I doubt they attend at all on Friday. We are suppose to take the remnants of Harvey. I'm slated to get at least 5 inches of rain. It's no where near the amount of rain that Houston has gotten (prayers still holding for them) but it's enough to give us some issues for bus travel.

Jim's boss is being sent to the AAA Cooper Terminal in Huston next week. I'm sure I'll see his first hand pictures of the damage. We've also been informed that every terminal will be required to send drivers to help get freight either discarded or if salvageable, sent to it's destination.

The Monday visit with my uncle went well. Everyone enjoyed the trip. We had a band from Harvey come through while I was out of town. The good news is, I missed the rains going both ways.

Your Prosper Lincoln looks like a wonderful community outreach program. But I can see how being overly detailed might slow it's progress.

I knew you were planning to retire soon. Your 7 months will fly by. Don't be mistaken you'll still be "queen of the world" the duties will just change a bit. emoticon

I hope your internet issues gets handled. Sounds like a headache we are having. Our internet company just randomly restarts our modems from a remote location. In the middle of the day with no warning...

I'm happy to report today should be non eventful, with the exception that the weekly lunch ritual begins today. I try to let Bug get herself settled in before I start showing up. I'm a little excited. She's made friends with a girl that immigrated with her parents from China. I get to meet her today. Apparently they were the only 2 kids that brought something to read on the first day of school and that sparked a friendship. emoticon

Cool! Love the idea of adventure in an 'ordinary' world. Bug is definitely blessed to have you as a mom.

Interesting day - started with Prosper Lincoln www.prosperlincoln.org/ which has visionary ideas, but no measurable goals and now we're discussing campus master planning, which I'm suggesting is too detailed...
emoticon
The 'end game' is retirement in the near future (potentially 7 months), so while I'd like to be 'queen of the world', I am more than ready to let others take the lead.

Allo tech is (finally) coming to the house tomorrow to deal with multiple internet issues. I'm hoping they used some of our existing equipment which may be causing the problem and will (@ minimum) ask them to take their boxes off the electrical box and place them on a table...
We shall see.

I love your eclipse shirts!

Here's mine and Bug's

Thank you Kali. I find it hard to give up a good teaching moment. Particularly when I can add adventure in an "ordinary" world.

I hope everyone has a fantastic Wednesday!

Eva - I love how you make every moment a teaching moment!

We did enjoy the eclipse.

(My sis, BIL & DH)
And wore our t-shirts

It was partly cloudy, so the 'darkness' and corona were not as intense as other places, but we saw the diamond and it was marvelous!

Kali: A pacifier? WOW! LOL that's funny. I'm almost glad all my duct work is in the ceiling.

Did you enjoy the eclipse?

I got a nice surprise yesterday. My mom came and watched the eclipse with me! We were in the 98% of coverage. The kids at Brenna's school had science class all afternoon. Most of it was out doors watching the eclipse happen. For fun I told the Egyptian Mythology around an eclipse at dinner .We live in a house full of cats and as Bast takes that one front and center in her warrior aspect it's an interesting share for kids. Well and husbands too that never bothered to learn mythology!

Eva - I know what you mean about finding challenges that fit our lifestyle. I too am neither a runner or competitive, but enjoyed OKM's triathlon and the cross-training it offers. I am looking forward to finding a schedule that works for me and getting back to my daily routine of strength and flexibility training as well as walking. (If I can find a pool to add into the mix, that would be icing on the cake...)

Having the ducts cleaned @ the house and they finished the bedroom wing yesterday. They found a pacifier, so lord only knows what they'll find in the kitchen ducts...

My sis and BIL are headed here to watch the eclipse. They'll arrive either today or tomorrow depending on a delivery and weather. I'm looking forward to a fun weekend with them!

Kali: I hope you got that down time. Sometimes we need that insensitive mix to keep projects moving forward in a productive manner. I hope you find your balance between compassion and getting things accomplished.

Thank you both about my challenges! I'm not a runner, (it's awesome if you are but I am not) so I sometimes struggle with finding the next challenge. Particularly when I'm a non-competitive sort. i think I like this one because the only person I'm trying to "best" is myself.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend.

Feline - your reunion sounds wonderful - I usually grab my sides from the local grocery, so other than some fresh fruits, have no advice...
Leslie - glad your leg is healing and emoticon on attending your exercise class.

Eva - how cool you actually were able to visit with your neighbor's brother. I'm sure OKM will be participating in more events. She's retiring this year to train! And talk about training - you are doing awesome with your planks challenge!

Karen - I so agree we need more resources to train our young folks to be adults particularly when they come from troubled backgrounds. Sending thoughts and prayers your granddaughter's way.

It's been a busy week, but other than one critical task to get out the door, I may get a little downtime today. (We shall see). We're starting some major reorganization changes and I need to remind myself to be aware of the people and their feelings. I am by nature, process driven and was not on the planet when patience was handed out, which can make for a very insensitive mix. Concentrating on compassion these days!

Karen: I'm sorry for the pressures that your grand daughter and her boyfriend are feeling. They really are not alone. These days it almost feels like high school needs to come equipped with "Adulting 101" as a class so kids feel more prepared. I hope you remind them that while genetics plays a part in addiction and mental illness conscious action can help control both. Consciously seek help for mental illness. And if you are not suffering from addiction, make a conscious effort to avoid "recreational substances." Addiction runs in my father's side of the family. It's a choice I had to make for myself a very long time ago.

I'm on day 8 of my planks challenge. Yesterday I was feeling the burn during Yoga. I did my daily timed plank first then I moved to my flow. I didn't realize it had a long plank in it as well. The good news is, I held it without hitting muscle fatigue.

Thanks for your support. I suspect this issue will be around for awhile due to some mental disorder iro lens with my daughter.

FELINE: the best thing I ever learned for dealing with my anxiety was ACT (acceptance commitment therapy. It involves mindfulness, acceptance & committing to something you value. For instance, if you value listening, at the reunion you would commit to practicing good listening. Your mind, of course, will habitually go to anxiety. You accept the anxiety as fully as possible. Feel it in your body, name it, & then set it to the side, like a concrete imagined object. Then you commit to 15 minutes of what you value, like listening. You continue this cycle for as long as needed. It doesn't mean your anxiety will cease, but you will have a valuable day. thehappinesstrap.com/

I was talking to my middle granddaughter & her boyfriend. So many issues face them since both of their families deal with addiction or mental illness issues. I wish I knew of groups that deal with the transition from high school into independent living for this age group. Unfortunately, we live in a small town. I feel led to do more but have no idea where to begin. Of course, I offered my wisdom & listened to them, but they are not alone in these issues.

I need to do some dancing to expend some of this fear & tension. emoticon emoticon

Kali: I'm glad your friend did well! Do you think she'll try another?

Feline: I should say I don't have a problem with Common Core specifically, but with the lack of support the teachers here get when switching out the methods. There are no work shops available to the teacher that struggles specifically with the math. I've had more than one to complain to me specifically about the state not preparing them for the switches. I'm glad your friend found a really good home school program that she likes. As I said, I don't always think the program is bad, I think our state "opt in" test is poorly administered. We have some company that developed our programming. They don't employ educators to develop the tests. We've had TnReady (our common core program)for 4 years now. They've yet to have one set of Tcaps (end of year testing) to even be distributed as planned, much less scored properly. It's a state wide issue.

I hope you enjoy your family reunion. That's a lot of people! Congrats on the loss. I don't know about dishes, but you might put a worry stone in your pocket to help with the anxiety. Something smooth that you can fiddle with when your feeling overwhelmed.

Leslie: I hope you are feeling better.

Thanks on the program. Honestly it's about an hour of work split up over the day. It sounds more ambitious than it is.

I sat with my neighbor's brother yesterday. He had a really good conversation. Most days I'm there he wants to sleep. Yesterday he was VERY talkative. Unusual to be sure but a change i welcomed.

Karen - I'm so sorry about the situation with your daughter, and the house on which she and her husband didn't complete the work! That must be very frustrating.

Eva - I'm sorry that the home school situation is so poor. It's good that you know what you can and cannot do.
Your exercise plan sounds very ambitious! I hope it works well for you.

Kali - I'm glad your friend did well in her triathlon! I wish I had done one when I was young, but I don't recall anyone doing them then.

Feline - it's great that your friend and her daughter are making such good progress with the homeschool program she has chosen. Good for her for doing so much research. It sounds like her daughter is doing amazingly well.

Thank you all for your kind words about the cellulitis in my leg. It is getting much better, but is still not healed of course. I had a hard time doing some of the moves in our exercise class this morning.

We finally have a day with no rain in the forecast, so I am on my way out to do some errands.

Have a great day everyone!

I have a family reunion coming up in a couple weeks. Last year was a surprise for everyone - we hardly had anyone show up! Only about 100 people! Usually it's pretty crowded, so we rent out the fairgrounds every year. This year we've heard from people all around the country flying in, so I expect it will be much busier. That should make it more fun, but it also makes me a little anxious. I've dropped over 100lbs since I saw most of these people last so I know I will be getting a lot of comments. I have some pretty extreme social anxiety - I only attend these because of how happy it makes my grandmother. Any tips on handling this? Also, any suggestions on good picnic style foods to make? It's always a potluck style picnic and I typically bring 3-4 sides. I always bring a buffalo chicken dip (grandma's favorite), but the others I switch up from year to year.

Eva: Our school districts have always provided free homeschool materials, but just this past year the largest district in the state set up a virtual school that was targeted primarily for homeschoolers. It's pretty cool, actually, and is great for students who don't thrive in the classroom as well. I live in Nebraska, though, and while we helped to write Common Core our own standards meet or exceed the Common Core standards so we don't use them yet. I have some experience with them, since some of my education is in Education, and I am all for them. They're a set of standards to meet, not a set of methods to teach (although as a student with disabilities some of these newer methods I've seen would have helped me immensely when I was younger, tbh) - the important thing with homeschooling is to get a curriculum that can do that. There are a LOT of substandard homeschool curricula out there, and some real shady companies looking to make a buck off homeschool families. One of my friends homeschools for religious reasons, but she did a tremendous amount of research before selecting the right curriculum for her daughters. Her oldest is just starting Kindergarten this year and she's bilingual, can read, count, play the piano - all kings of things. She picked a great Pre-K program and is moving ahead with their Kindergarten program for her, too.

Karen - I can't imagine such a fluid schedule - glad you can handle it! Good luck on finding a new renter and I hope the family issues clear soon...

Feline - love that you can share your life lessons.

Leslie - sending healing thoughts your way.

Eva - the educational system is difficult to navigate - I'm just glad you are there for Bug and can keep her interests alive and thriving - WTG on your planks challenge.
The Energizer Bunny rocks it again!

Triathlon was super. Barb did great (as opposed to me who couldn't figure out how to post a photo...) Will try to blog about it later today (assuming I have a couple good phone photos...)

Kali: How did your friend do in her triathlon?

Feline: How fortunate you decided that surgery wasn't for you. It always scares me for other people.

Leslie: I hope you are feeling better :(

Karen: I'm sorry your daughter left you holding the tool bag. I hope you get your house fixed soon and can find someone to rent.

Our state sets home school students up to fail. If you want to re-enter the public school system you have to test in. I have yet to meet a home school child that tested in on grade level. It's always at least one grade behind. We have K-12 free home school materials through the state, if you choose to use them. Even so those children still test in behind. I think maybe that's why I say homeschooling isn't for us. I can do many things but I'm not proficient to teach common core math. And it's my experiance that when the teacher shows frustration with the material the students suffer. And trust me, I get frustrated with the extra steps. I often set Bug to a different task, go figure it out and come back just so she doesn't hear me mutter when it doesn't work out right the first time. Oh and I teachers aren't being taught how to teach the program either. So they are in my same boat when the rules change.

We had a busy weekend and I'm in for a busy week. I started a planks challenge last week. Planks, Yoga, and cardio. Today I'll get to the first 2 but the cardio is up in the air. I may just run out of daylight.

School officially starts back today so I need to step up & be organized after 2 weeks of lollygagging around!

My daughter & family moved out of the house we own & still isn't talking to us so now we have to compete some work that she & her estranged husband left unfinished & find new renters. We can't afford th mortgage otherwise! emoticon

Went to church last night & saw a much needed friend at just the right time so I am grateful for that! emoticon

FELINE: Thanks for what you shared. My Human Development prof seems very nice, works with Vets with PTSD. I think I'm going to really like that class. I've often felt called to helping prisoners, but I see so many needs in our society that I'm overwhelmed by them.

LESLIE: Sorry you ended up in the emergency room. I hope you feel better soon.

Karen - the courses you will be taking sound good! I believe there's also free tuition for seniors here in Ontario. I know what you mean about doing school well but not careers.

Eva - you are lucky to have such good shelters there! And lucky to have a handy husband!

Kali - I love your glasses!
I agree too that 4-year colleges are not for everyone.

Feline - You certainly have a lot of education! I'm glad you're finally in a good situation. Your goal sounds fantastic!
I'm very glad you didn't have that surgery.

Sorry I've been missing. I have cellulitis in my lower right leg, so that's been pretty uncomfortable. I spent yesterday morning at the ER. I've been falling way behind on the computer. I'm trying to catch up today.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Karen: It took me a long time to figure out what I wanted to do. Five schools and eight majors. I knew I wanted to work with underrepresented groups, but I couldn't figure out how. I started as a pre-nursing student (something I'd had my heart set on since childhood), but a learning disability winnowed me out of the program early. I was kind of in limbo when I realized I couldn't be a nurse, and when I told the advisor I liked helping people, reading, and libraries she told me that librarians didn't go to college so I should consider being a teacher instead. So then I tried inclusive education, early childhood education, drug and alcohol counseling, human services, liberal arts, family science, and finally library science. I still didn't really know what I wanted to do - I touted myself as a "generalist" and took classes all over the place - until I just happened to sit in on a seminar on prison librarianship one afternoon. It covered everything I was interested in and made use of most of my education. The seminar director thought I would be perfect for the job and encouraged me to apply, and in weeks I had 8 offers for positions (before graduation!). My time with the inmates was eye opening. My state doesn't have prison librarians, so I can't continue that career here, but I can continue to learn about what contributes to youth deviant behavior and try to help my community stop that process by teaching at-risk youth that success has so many different definitions.

Kali: There's such a de-emphasis on vocational education anymore, at least in the U.S. So many studies point to the benefits, though, even for students who choose to pursue a 4-year degree. Vocational education improves high school retention, graduation, and grades! Providing real world examples for core classes is key to maintaining interest and allowing kids to explore and learn in multiple ways.

Eva: If I ever have kids I plan to homeschool. I'm not creative like you, but I'm persistent! I'd hope to get a homeschool co-op going (there's a big group in my area, since it's a military area) and "join forces" with the other families to create an online learning community with offline supplements by the parents in the subjects they're comfortable in. Since I'm a librarian, maybe I could do English or reading?

FELINE: All I can say is WOW! I have no plans for after I'm done. That's the main reason why I'm in counseling. I do school well but not careers.

EVA: After homeschooling my grandkids for 13 years, I can say for certain that I couldn't teach everything equally well, but the internet is a boundless resource, I'm great a finding stuff on the internet emoticon . Being resourceful & creative, however, isn't taught but rather encouraged to develop & it sounds like you have that gift.

And a handy husband is invaluable. Mine is handy but doesn't have a lot of free time. emoticon

KALI: I miss hearing Garrison Keillor. I still listen after church on Sundays as I drive around doing shopping in the big city & then home, but it's not the same. I also get the daily jokes! emoticon

My DH won't be home much this weekend. My middle granddaughter wanted to come over for dinner but we may need to squeeze in a brunch. One of the issues that affects my eating is DH's weird schedule. He leaves usually in the late afternoon and gets home in the morning. It's hard to plan when to have a meal together. This morning a fellow trucker woke him up to see if they could meet for lunch while he was traveling through our town so I quickly packed his cooler & off he went!

If you're a planner, don't marry a truck driver! emoticon

Feline - hope your glasses work as well as mine. What a marvelous goal! Your life experiences and education will make you an excellent career resource for young people. I so agree 4 year colleges are not for everyone and we need to promote the 'trades' by remembering those who work with their hands (and minds) are artists in their own right. Interestingly males are now a 'minority' in higher-education. Re-emphasis on skills training could tip that balance back...

Karen - how cool that you can attend tuition free. Wonderful that GA is supporting lifelong learning and the benefit the 'kids' will get from your participation will make the experience even richer. English and Psychology - you'll have to let us know which you decide to pursue...

Eva - so glad Jim could do the work himself, but sorry for the trouble. I beg to differ on your characterization of teaching. I believe we 'learn' far more by doing and you are an excellent teacher in that field!

The fan is replaced AND the same company cleans ducts. I'll get a call Monday to set up a time for an estimate. The bedroom wing is compact, so the duct runs are short - in the ceiling on the lower level and floor on the upper. I think I'm going to ask for a separate bid for the living wing - only one floor, but much longer runs.
A emoticon is participating in a triathlon practice swim today to decide if she plans to compete. She suffered a concussion from a couple falls and while I have no concerns with the run and bike, she's never competed @ the swim distance. Whichever she decides, I'm riding with her tomorrow to support her decision.
Tomorrow night we have tickets to Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home "Love and Comedy" Tour @ Pinewood Bowl.

So we will have a busy weekend with emoticon on Sunday!

I have a subscription to a legal news outlet through my work, and one of the stories this morning is on how 5 people died last year from weight loss surgery. Specifically, from having weight loss balloons inserted. It really struck home for me since I was considering surgery this last year, and made me really glad that - even though I was considering the sleeve - I decided not to get surgery. Feeling kind of introspective today.

Kali: The glasses are fantastic. I hope they work.

I does seem like it's always something.

Karen: How interesting! I started college life as a pre-law major, dropped and became cosmetologist. Now I'm a full time mom.

This week I've had about 15 people ask me why I don't teach. I do believe they are after someone certified to do homeschooling. Nope! I love kids. I'm happy to do science projects and art camps and nature walks but I'm not teaching the baby darlin's math and social studies. I'll tutor them but teaching is a whole 'nother ballgame.

That's what I get for sharing our project videos and photos on facebook. emoticon

I overslept by 20 minutes this morning. A rare thing to be sure. The alternator went out on Jim's work van and had to be replaced. He got finished at 7:30 last night. Needless to say between battery and part we are $312 poorer but blessed we didn't have to add an additional $150-200 labor since Jim did the work himself. And he didn't lose it to a shop for a day. It's good to have a handy husband.

Karen: I didn't start in library sciences. I changed my major 8 times! I was a Family Science major, after I took the class. After I discovered Library Science was real (my original advisor told me it wasn't) I double majored in Library Science and Family Science. The school discontinued the Family Science program one semester before I could get the degree, though. It led to a strong interest in Sociology (I was highly encouraged to triple major in Sociology since I took every Sociology class at the community college and nearly every one offered at the 4-year school, but at the time it would have been too much), particularly in the development of youth deviant behavior. I ended up becoming a maximum security prison librarian, and though I had to leave that to return to my home state for cancer treatments I work in a law library now. On the side I am working with a SA assistant director to research the effects of learning disabilities and accessible library resources on young adult recidivism, and my PhD dissertation is going to be in the development of career and technical education (CTE, or Vocational Ed) resource accessibility in public libraries. I will be using what I learn and a grant I received from my school to open an alternative career center dedicated to helping at-risk youth discover careers that don't require a 4-year degree. That one intro class introduced me to the entire world of human development, and how we can change our futures by changing ourselves and our environments.

EVA: I'm getting a BS in Integrative Studies which means I can study whatever I want as long as I get a minor of 5 classes in one area. Since I like both English & Psychology, the minor will be in either one of those.

KALI: I hadn't heard of Visionkr. Something to keep in mind. You look good in them. Keep us informed if they work. I had to stop using blended lenses because they tired my eyes too much. I have a large astigmatism.

FELINE: How did Human Development lead you to be a librarian? I'm not fond of phones either but my DD uses texting to rant & rave. I don't want to encourage her so I insist she meet with me in person, but she won't. Everything has its pluses and minuses!

I'm actually able to attend school for free except for the cost of books due to a Senior Waiver available in any University System of Georgia school. I understand South Carolina has that program, too, so probably lots of states do.

Karen: I loved Intro to Human Development. That class changed my life, not even kidding. I changed majors because of that class and that set me on the path to where I am now!

I also communicate almost exclusively by text. Even at work I use pretty much exclusively email. I talk to my doctors by email, too. I hate the phone.

Kali: Nice! I just got new glasses, too! They have an anti-glare lens, a special coating for frequent computer users (I spend probably 12+ hours a day in front of a screen), and are bifocals.

Leslie - wonderful that you can share your neighbor's cats when you want.
Amazing how some people can impose upon us...
Karen - emoticon Keep you busy? Wow - what a wonderful selection of courses!
Sorry about the kids and texting as so much can be lost even over the phone.

Eva - I'll bet you do feel rejuvenated - glad you took a Me Day.

I have to share my new glasses.

I've been suffering eye strain so am trying these Visionkr specs. They have an anti-glare lens; block over 30% blue light and are registered with the Food and Drug administration as a Class I medical device.
(The sky looks a little green when I look out the window, but otherwise they seem like they will work.)
Our HVAC fan failed from too much dust emoticon as apparently our electrostatic filters stopped working ... I'm trying to set up an appointment with the company and apparently the work order hasn't been turned in yet.

Also made an appointment for Monday to take the emoticon in - it (was) making a whining sound first thing and I want them to check the brakes + will get an early oil change.
If it's not one thing - it's another! emoticon

Kali: The house is Beautiful! and I'm so glad Rose feels better.

Leslie: We have a couple of awesome shelters here with kitten and puppy rooms. I sometimes forget that abandoned pets aren't always so fortunate.

I learned a few years ago that I have to take a day away from anything but a true emergency about 4 times per year. The day may be random but some days my brain needs to decompress. I also learned in my mid twenties that it's okay to shut it all down for a few hours. I'm still working on the art on "no."

Karen: I hope it all shakes out with the granddaughter. one day she'll understand.

What will your degree be when you finish?

I did get my silent day and what a blessing. Today I feel like a new woman.

KALI: Glad Rose is doing well again. Pets can be so routine oriented that changes in their environment can upset them. Your house looks beautiful.

EVA: I did "stick to my guns" even though I suspect she is angry. Hard to tell since it was through a series of texts. emoticon . It's frustrating but even my daughter communicates exclusively through texts. I like your choice to do radio silence. I used to go camping to achieve that but I have too many people & pets to care for now to leave home. I need to determine a regular sabbath from electronics.

LESLIE: This granddaughter is my youngest and will soon turn 17. Some of the problem does relate to her teenage "stuff" but also a contentious divorce her parents are in. My food was better today. Thanks for asking.

Thanks for all the support. Today was better & I see my counselor tomorrow. School starts on Monday so I'll have a focus back. I enjoy studying. I am taking Advanced Composition, American Romanticism literature & Introduction to Human Development. That ought to keep me busy. emoticon

I enjoy the situation my parents & I have. It's been very healing for us.

Karen - sorry you have an issue with your granddaughter. How old is she?
I have had a parrot in the past, and loved him, but I really think I'm better off with my stuffed animals at this point.
It's great that you share a duplex with your parents!
I'm sorry you had a bad food day; I hope today will be better!

Eva - I used to volunteer at the shelter, but they don't have kitten or puppy rooms. The animals are all in cages, and the cages are stacked too high for me. I loved getting the cats out to brush and play with them, and give them treats, but I hated putting them back in; sometimes it was physically impossible for me to do it. The last straw was when I was trying to get a cat back into a cage which was on the floor. When I tried to squat down, I fell. Fortunately I didn't break anything that time, but that's always a worry with the osteoporosis I have. I think my pet days are over. One of my neighbours, just two apartments down from mine, has 3 cats, so I can visit with them sometimes. They are sweet cats.
I love goats too!
Good for you, with the 'radio silence'. I hope that gives you a calmer and more peaceful day! I used to have a neighbour who would wait for my husband to leave for work, and would come over from next door instantly with her coffee in hand. I was 22 at the time and didn't know how to be assertive, so I ended up getting a job to get away from her!

Kali - I love the pictures! Your place looks fantastic!
I'm glad Rose is doing better.

Have a great day everyone!

Leslie - definitely a good choice not to foster...
I'm sure your grandsons will love their care packages!

Karen - I can relate to emotional eating - hope your interaction with your granddaughter improves and you had a good food day. Wonderful that you can be there for your folks.

Eva - had to look up SAHM (shows no small people around our house...)
Glad you are going into radio silence. I take the weekends and 'go dark' - no computer, email, etc. A little scary @ first, but now folks @ the office know I'm serious about working during working hours.

Rose is doing much better - I think she ate too much food @ one time. (DH had been siting with them in the morning to get them to eat out of their own bowls and with the painter @ the house, the schedule was disrupted.

Speaking of the painter - Pictures!
Front is probably the best color match. Two colors are the dark brown and sandstone/taupe.

Fascia, windows and side doors were also painted and I had the color over the flat roof changed to brown to 'hide' the siding.

I also asked that he paint the galvanized flashing @ the base of the chimney and he did!

Meeting this morning followed by a tour of Tabitha www.tabitha.org/ one of our elder care continuum facilities and Foster Care Review Board this evening.
All is GOOD!

Kali: how's Rose? I look forward to seeing your painting.
My normal is never actually normal LOL. it's a good thing I roll with the punches.
Did you get to sip that wine on the deck or did the weeds win the day?

Leslie: I had forgotten you had advanced arthritis. You can always volunteer at the shelter to play in the kitten or puppy room. "Pets" with no clean up. It keeps the animals social. I fully understand the want of a companion. I'm animal companion poor. And my kid wants a baby goat. I'm so glad we live in the city and goats are a no go. I don't plan to move but if I ever did I'd have to buy a farm. Brenna would flourish on a farm.

Karen: I hope all is well with the granddaughter. Stick to your guns, Lady. Sometimes we have to.

My grandparents lived with us when a child. I think multigenerational homes are fantastic. It's why I'm the 37 year old woman that sits before you today. my grandpa passed in 1990 and I helped care for my grandmother until she passed in 1998. I'm glad you are there to help care for your parents. It's a wonderful thing.

I'm going to do a rare thing, Today I'm going into radio silence. meaning I don't answer the phone for anything less than an emergency call. I need a day free of the mindless chatter. i have a friend that's a SAHM as well and man she's been up in arms about her kid drinking too much green tea. I was a bit of a smart tail and told her, "Hide it or don't buy it.." This has gone on for over a week.

Woke up too early this morning ruminating about an issue with my youngest granddaughter. I'm going to stand on my principles even though it is unpopular emoticon .

LESLIE: Changing litter boxes is a regular daily chore for sure. My grandmother used to have parakeets. Still need to clean their cage but it's at eye level. emoticon Pets are good company but do take quite a bit of work. Self care comes first!

KALI: I hope Rose is keeping food down.

EVA: DH & I share a duplex with my parents. It's the little things that make all the difference in caring for elderly parents. But I've also been glad we are around when my father has fallen. It's good you were around for your mom to get back in her home.

Yesterday was not a good food day since I was angry about my granddaughter. Anger & boredom seem to be my downfall with food. Hopefully, today will be less self destructive.

Eva - I hope your schools are air conditioned if kids have to be there in August; and I'm sure it's hotter there than it is here in Ontario!
I did consider seeing if I could foster cats from the shelter, but with my arthritis, it's hard to keep the litter box clean, and would be very hard to transport cats to the vet. And, if the cat needed medication, it's hard to bend down. Last year when I was trying to give my cat a pill, I lost my balance while bending down, and broke my collarbone when I fell. That's why I considered a rat or a tortoise, but I think I'm really better off without a pet at this point.
I'm glad your mom took a mental health day! Lucky you live so close.

Kali - it's good to hear from you!
It's actually been too cool to read outside for a few days, but it's sunny today and in the 70s, so I may go out today.
I'm glad your painter is a fast worker! I would love to see a picture.
Sipping wine on the deck after work sounds like a lovely idea!
I'm sorry Rose is starting to show her age. I hope you'll be able to have her with you for quite a while yet.

Nothing new here. My son sent email addresses for my grandsons at camp, so I've sent them each a message. I'm waiting for my doctor's appointment on the 23rd.

Have a great day everyone!

I've missed the notification for this discussion, but it sounds like all are doing well.

Feline - sorry you didn't click with your therapist and hope the next one works both physically and mentally.
emoticon How cool that you offered to take your niece for a girl's day out - it sounds like it was a blast.

Eva - glad the 'meet the teach' went well! I'll bet you'll be delighted to get back to 'normal', although it sounds like there is no such thing. Good thing you were there for your mom...

Leslie - I hope your health is improving and you can continue to enjoy your reading on the deck - sounds idyllic!
Karen - emoticon Please do not feel uncomfortable as we are a great group who loves to share. Hope your day went well and we'll see you soon.

emoticon abound in Nebraska. The emoticon is being blessed inside and out with painting and cleaning. I'm thrilled with how wonderful (and fast - should be finished today) the painter is. The change is subtle (we picked the garage door to 'match' the siding which of course it didn't) and painting 'out' the siding above the low roof has worked beyond my expectations. (I'll have to post a picture.)
I'm planning to pick up some emoticon to sip on the deck after work to celebrate (or maybe I'll pull more weeds - we shall see...)
The only worries we have revolve around our 13 year old emoticon Rose is starting to show her age and 'lost' her dinner last night. I'm going to go easier on the treats tonight and hopefully all will be good.

Feline: That's fantastic. I'm glad you had a good day with her. It sounds like she really enjoyed herself.

Leslie: Yes, our schools generally are air conditioned. In my town the elementary school is a very old building, but a new one will open next year. The high school was built about 6 years ago and the middle school was built not long before that. So relatively new buildings.

Is it possible for you to become a foster home for cats? You'd have your felines but when you aren't able to take care of them, you just have to stop accepting them into your home. It might be a good solution for you.

I hope you enjoyed your holiday.

My mom had an emergency yesterday. I ended up having to go let her in her house because she locked herself out. I'm glad I live 5 minutes away. I talked her into taking a mental health day. We went out to lunch at a new Japanese place and then she relaxed at home while I sat in pick up line. She said it was so nice just to be busy doing nothing. I told her sometimes we all need that.

Eva - I hope your daughter enjoys 4th grade! She sounds like such a good student. I gather your schools are all air conditioned; I don't think all of ours are, and of course July and August are usually the hottest months. The schools certainly weren't air conditioned when I was attending, and quite often kids would faint while taking final exams in late June.
I envy you and Feline with your cats. My last cat died last November and I'm too old now to start over. I did think of getting an older cat, but vet bills can be high.

Feline - it sounds like you and your niece had a wonderful day together! I'm glad she was willing to settle for chicken nuggets.

It's a holiday here today, so not much is going on. It's cloudy and cool, so I won't be on my balcony today. I do have to start my car and run it for a while to charge the battery. I haven't driven in for a couple of weeks...

Have a great day!

Eva: My friend got called to work, so my husband ended up following us around all day (which is fine, she loves to tease her Uncle). I kept her from about 10:30-7:00 and we had a blast. We built the truck, and she wanted to see her nana so we met up with the grandparents for Chinese for lunch. Then we went to the pet party where she got to pick out toys for her kitties and hold a 10-week old puppy. Then we saw Cars 3, where she got COTTON CANDY!! She wasn't ready to go home so we went to our house and played with the cats for awhile. She wanted pancakes from McDonald's for dinner, but sadly those are morning only, but it was okay because chicken nuggets come with a toy. She admired the fancy ketchups emoticon

Feline: How was the Girl's Day out?

Leslie: My girl is in 4th grade. I think our "Summer" break is set so that we can enjoy cooler weather for vacations. It's the norm in Tennessee unless you are a year round school.

Karen: Welcome back! Don't feel awkward! And another cat momma ;) I have 5 in the house and I care for neighborhood feral cats. There's always a feline lurking here!

Feline - thanks for answering my questions! I hope you all have a wonderful time!

Karen - emoticon
I have also raised a litter of 6 kittens when the mother cat was killed on the road. I had to hand feed them and I think they thought I was their mother. They were very sweet.
I hope you had a good meditation.

HI,
I'm new here AGAIN. And feeling a bit awkward.

FELINE: I hope your day with your niece went well. It sounded wonderful. We have 4 cats., My husband, the truck driver, rescued 3 of them from the woods after some guy abandoned them. They were 3 weeks old. It was quite a feat to keep them alive but they are thriving now & tearing up the house emoticon .

I'm not sure what today holds since my husband is out on the road. I will try & be mindful of my eating. Off to meditate.

Leslie: She's almost 5. She's a girly girl who's very interested in nature and science - but she hates getting dirty! I think the kids club will be perfect - she gets an apron and they teach her how to build the truck, then let her decorate it anyway she wants. She gets to keep the apron, too! I am not sure where her mom will be. My brother just said she'd be gone all day, so I am guessing she either has to work or has a Saturday class. Usually she goes to one of the grandparents houses if they both need to be somewhere, so I'm not sure what turn of events led to him asking me, but I can certainly arrange a fun day with her. If all else fails, I have four cats - we can spend hours at my house just playing with them!

Kali - I have been enjoying our heat but the humidity not so much. We have a severe thunderstorm watch now, and it will be much cooler tomorrow. I'm glad you've been having a break from your heat.
I have been noticing the shorter days too!

Feline - I'm very happy to hear that your arm is better!
I'm glad the massage helped, but sorry you didn't hit it off with the therapist. I hope your experience next month will be better. I've never had a massage, and don't like the idea of being touched either.
Happy anniversary!!
I'm sure your brother will really appreciate you and your BFF taking your niece for the day tomorrow. It sounds like you have a really fun day planned for her. How old is she? Where is her mother? I'm sure your brother will be very glad to be done with school!

Eva - Your school year does end early! The kids here go pretty much until the bitter end of June.
I'm glad meeting the teacher went well! It sounds good that the group will be calmer this year. What grade is Brenna in? I'm glad the first week is done.

I continue to do a LOT of reading, often on my balcony. I have a new health concern, but can't get in to see my doctor until the 23rd. If I get worse before then, I'll go to the ER.

I hope you all have a good weekend!

My brother texted me last night asking if we could take my niece overnight, or at least for a few hours. He's trying to finish his last school project (Ever! Then he's done!) and needs some quiet time. Today is my anniversary with my husband so we can't take her tonight, but my BFF and I offered to take her out all day Saturday for a girls day. We're going to pick her up in the morning to go to Home Depot for their monthly kids club where she gets to build a toy truck, then we'll head to the children's museum and to lunch (her choice), then to a pet store that's having an anniversary party (with puppies!). After that we'll check in with my brother to see if he still needs some time alone. If he does, princess mani/pedis will take up a good chunk and then dinner with my husband (we'll invite my brother, too - brains need food!).

Leslie: We start early, but we also end kind of early. Our last day is May 23rd.

Kali: Enjoy your temp break! We get one too. And RAIN! We need rain.

Feline: I'm glad you are feeling better. I too have touch issues so I understand. There are very few people in this world that can walk up and touch me that I don't tense up. When I've go for a massage I have to prepare myself for days before I go. I hope you click with your next therapist.

Meet the teacher went well. It helps that Brenna can read allergy labels. I told them she will request to read the information herself and both were rather impressed by that. I think we are in a good group this year. there are a couple of kids I'm not sure about, but the rest of the group seems like a calmer group than we had last year.

Eva: My arm is MUCH better. I'm not icing it anymore and I hardly need the ibuprofen. It's still stiff by the end of the day so I am still taking the muscle relaxer at night, but it's a huge difference from last week and the week before.

The massage experience was okay. I am uncomfortable being touched in general, so it was never going to be a perfect first experience, but the therapist and I didn't totally click. She did a good job, no doubt - I could feel the knots unwinding as she worked them and was more relaxed when I left - but when I signed up for their monthly membership plan I did book next months massage with a different therapist. The manager who sold me the membership told me the woman I'll see next month is the only one of her staff that has actually put her to sleep on the table before, so hopefully that is a good sign for me!

Eva - I like the idea of a 'mystery' teacher too. No preconceived ideas.
Leslie - enjoy your emoticon - I'm emoticon we get a break from them.

Didn't get a chance to test the sprinkler head (hope it's not broken), but was able to finish laundry and put plates on the emoticon (Good thing - I'd be illegal today)
Have a reschedule zero balance massage late today followed by spraying the arborvitae (bagworms decimated one tree and are chomping on others), sprinkler test and adding Clorox (tbsp) to the AC drain. Code requires kinks in the line (trap points) and the additive keeps it clear in the summer months.

Eva - it's hard to believe that school is already starting there; it doesn't start here until the day after Labour Day. I hope your new teacher is all you could have hoped for.

Our hot weather seems to be just starting, finally!

Welcome to August! May your days get shorter, your evenings get longer, and possibly cooler? Maybe ? Hopefully!!!

Kali: I hope the soreness is gone by now, but your flowerbed looked lovely.

Today we meet our teacher. She's a "Mystery Teacher" as this is her first year in our school district. I almost like it better this way. School supplies are labeled and packed for the first day, tomorrow. After we do today's dry run of the morning routine I plan to spend the day reading or watching K.C. Undercover with my girl.

The last day of summer vacation is always the hardest...
