ShaolinWarrior, what an awful situation you have! I complain about averaging 5 hours a night during the week, but multiple nights of 4 interrupted hours per would do me in. I'm too old to burn that candle at both ends. Any chance you can ever switch to working days? I remember in my (much) younger shift-working time in the AF how hard it was to sleep days in base housing.

Sleep is important, but I rarely get the rec 8 hrs. My Dr. advised 9 for me. LMAO That was a laugh. I wk 12 hr nights, 4 on 4 off when the sched is running smooth. I also have a 1 hr commute.I live in a subdivision where houses are about 15 - 20 ft apart.

I do all the normal stuff, relaxion, meditation, darkening curtains, blocked out windows, fans, etc. yada yada. LOL Im lucky to get 4 - hrs sleep a day, and thats usually not uniterrupted sleep. I do get more on days off when I can sleep nights.

But there is nothing I can do about all the Srs that need to get out early and do yard wk before the 100 degree temps arrive. Or the neighbor that always slams his trash cans against my bedrm wall, or their kids that cant play w/o constant sqealing and yelling. Now fig in the horns, sirens, thumping music, parties, and active AF Base down the street.

Everyone tells me to move, but I own the house and cant afford to move, The neighborhood had drastically changed from a quiet Mil retiree area, to party central for young couples with multi kids.

Oh yeah, you bet my spiritual practices keep me sane! LOL

Consistently good sleep continues to elude me. I try, and I have good intentions, but it's so hard to squeeze in life between long commutes, long work days, and the early alarm. Have to agree with the risk of poor sleep and obesity. I really packed on the pounds when my job changed last, bringing with it the long commute. And yesterday was a big example, when I was ravenous before my feet hit the floor from bed after just a few hours of sleep, and all my foggy brain would think about all day was food.

Sleep is so underrated in our society. I get at least 7 hours per night - often more than that. It is the BEST thing that I have done for my health!!

Health Buzz: Short, Disrupted Sleep May Spike Diabetes Risk

By Angela Haupt

Poor Sleep May Lead to Diabetes and Obesity

Getting too little sleep—or disrupted sleep—may increase the risk of diabetes and obesity. So suggests a new study of 21 men and women who spent three weeks in a sleep laboratory, getting only five-and-a-half-hours of shut-eye per 28-hour period, spread out over various times of day and night. The researchers observed a slowdown in participants' metabolism and a reduction in insulin production. Such changes can lead to weight gain and increased blood sugar, according to findings published Wednesday in Science Translational Medicine. At the end of the study, the participants' resting metabolic rate, for example, was 8 percent lower than where it had started—which could translate into a 10-pound weight gain over a year. "If you're not getting enough sleep, then it's hard to find the energy to exercise," study author Orfeu Buxton, an assistant professor in the division of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School, told Time. "And if you're not getting enough sleep, you not only eat more than you need but you tend to make poorer food choices. So in terms of obtaining optimum health, all three pillars—diet, exercise, and sleep—are important."
