For Stings or Bites:
Apply ice or vinegar to prevent swelling.
A paste of salt pulls out and prevents swelling and stops itching.
Household Bleach is also good to use on bites, just put a dab on your finger and put on the sting or bite, it kills the germs that are present on your skin and usually the sting won't get red and swollen.

I use essential oils for just about everything! Like anything else you can get overwhelmed as there are 100s, but I just use a few that work for many ailments. I also use a camphor linament for pain as well. It is not 100% natural, but close and has been around for almost 150 years so good with me! I have 4 herniated disks, so pain is a big issue for me and my oils and linament seem to be doing good. I use Theives oil for added immune booster too.

For insomnia and RLS try magnesium, potassium and calcium.
For sleep chamomile tea to drink, make a strong tea and pour it in your bath and take a nice warm soak just before bed the warmth helps you sleep too! You cna take the chomomile teabg after it has cooled and apply to your eyes as a compress and it helps take away bage under the eyes.
Passion flower and hops can help with sleep and valerian root. Often these can be found in pill form in a health food store my favorite blend is by Highland Labs in Mount Angel, OR. emoticon

My husband got a puncture wound to his foot, stepped on rebar and it went right through his shoe into his foot! Ouch! We washed it off, soaked his foot in very warm water with sea salt added and dropped Tea Tree oil into the wound "neat" straight on full strength. He did this and alternated with ice packs and elevating the foot. It looks great, he is still hobbling but much improved three days later! I LOVE Mother Nature and all the healing the Lord has given us! emoticon

Hi LSBETH
I havent purchased any DMAE or ALA yet.
I remember reading about using honey in a mask - is that how you are using it? I have been using coconut oil as a moisturizer - it works ( and taste) great!

Does anyone have suggestions for insomnia and/or RLS? I love to make tinctures, lotions, etc. I have ginger tincture, eucalyptus/champhor lotion, and am waiting for supplies to make chammomile tincture. I'd love any suggestions!

SlimChances, I use raw honey b/c it has enzymes that repair sun damage & has anti-aging, anti-oxidant properties. Plus I don't mind putting it on my lips & around the mouth. Must be raw honey not the regular honey. Where do you buy your ALA & DMAE?

I control my food. I no longer let food control me.

I have discovered that Cedar Tea is great for respiratory infections. Cedar is a natural antibiotic, so I boiled a few leaves into a tea and breathed in the steam for about 10 minutes before I drank the tea. It's made me feel worlds better.

I listen to a radio show on Fri mornings - Holly Hills Health - and they were talking about a face cream made with Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin C Ester and DMAE. It is an anti- ageing cream and is supposed to be very good. Does anyone here have a favorite home made face cream?

Bright Blessings

This one is for our pets and works on any type of hair loss, skin condition even mange:

Make a paste of sulphur and witch hazel and apply to the affected area on Fido.

The sulphur is yellow in color, buy at the feed store and is put on roses in the fall. Now it Fido will try to lick and probably will, the mixture off so your yard is going to stink a bit, if you know what I mean.

I found this recipe in an old cajun cook book. And it works. Every time on of my petit ya-yas (dogs) starts itching out comes the old sulphur and witch hazel.

A super easy recipe that I use all the time: 16 Oz. of Aloe Vera Gel to 210 drops of tea tree essential oil and 100 drops of eucalyptus essential oil. I LOVE this stuff. It is a great general antiseptic (without smelling awful), instantly soothes bug/mosquito bites, serves as a natural insect repellent, and can be used to reduce abcesses and treat staph infections! (topical use only)

I make a tea out of elderflower, marsh mallow root and lemon balm for chest congestion. I also use hyssop tea for cough and throat irritation. I enjoy chamomile and lavender for relaxation as well. I buy loose dried herbs and I also grow and dry some of my own....I keep them on hand to brew teas, use in cooking and aromatherapy.

Need natural remedy for my husband's high iron, the Dr. is taking a pint of blood every week to correct it, but says it may take up to THREE YEARS to do it.

We are told it is genetic, so what will help his body detox so they don't have to do this as long?

We do eat a fairly healthy diet, much better than most, but I am the health nut, not him.

Shirley are you on any meds? Many meds cause that.

My mother was taking prednisone for arthritis and had that same problem. Her arms looked like she'd been beaten.

You might try typeing bioidentical hormone cream into your favorite search engine; I haven't used it personally.

Plantain - not the banana, the weed that seems to grow everywhere in my garden. A friend told me it was great for a ton of things and the internet seems to agree. I just chewed a few leaves (not delicious alas) and it has given me a reprieve from incessant coughing due to a cold.

Hi,
I just got home today after three weeks in the hospital...came home with a new hip and an infection in the new hip :(...Should hopefully be okay after 6 weeks of IV antibiotic therapy.
Thank you for your prayers. Considering the risks of the surgery for me, this was a "minor glitch"...
hope you are well.

Hi NEW_HUSKER_MAMA,
I put nopal cactus into my search engine and came up with this website. It has the most in depth info on it. It has some advertising for their product, but good info too. It has alot of healing properties, including reducing inflamation, reduces swelling in joints muscles and organs, improves breathing, normalizes both blood pressure and blood sugars.

If you have a tooth ache and are unable to get to the dentist immediately, place a whole clove between the cheek and jaw bone near the affected tooth. It will sooth the pain in 10-15 min, but should be left in place for a few hrs.

I'm wondering if any one knows of any medicinal uses for nopal cactus fruits?? I'm in TX & have LOTS of them scattered about the 10 acres we live on. Plus we've got lots of mesquite too. I've tried looking up uses for mesquite beans & nopal cactus fruit online but can't find much & my county ag office considers both to be nuisance plants ....

Bee/Hornet Stings
Slice an onion in half and rub the juice over the sting. In a few minutes the redness and swelling will be gone.
* This remedy is interesting because sometimes when a bee/wasp/hornet stings you they also can push bacteria that is on your skin down into the sting area causing more pain and swelling. The onion has anti-bacterial and anti-septic actions so I guess that's why it works.

I've been revisiting the water cure. I tried it years ago a little bit...

www.watercure2.org/

It seems to work a little better for me now that I add a little raw apple cider vinegar to the water... This helps to alkalize the body. I also do better with weight loss when I have this much water and some ACV.

PS To my old SP friends - It's been a very rough journey... My beloved, healthy, athletic, tall, dark and handsome husband died in August 2012 from a very aggressive cancer... In the many months caring for him I was stressed and didn't "care" anymore, and put back on 30 pounds I had just finished losing... And then I gained even more...

A short, but very sweet, video tribute to this beautiful man:

That's really interesting, thank you so much for sharing that information with us! I hope your husband is doing well and you also. I'm glad some doctors are realizing the benefits of using treatments that have been used in natural remedies for some time.

Baking soda is also now recognized by the medical community for its effects of reducing mouth sores and removing toxic effects of chemotheray. My dh was put on this 2 parts baking soda to 1 part salt in one quarter to one third cup of water 4 times a day, morning, after lunch, adter dinner, and before bedtime a week before chemo and has been on it ever since. He has not had toxicity or mouth sores due to his chemo.

Baking Soda:
People used to use baking soda in the water they used to sterilize baby bottles.
Was used as a substitute for toothpaste.
Was and is still used as a treatment for acid reflux/indigestion. Use 1/2 tsp baking soda in 2 0z.warm water...stir until completely dissolved...drink, within seconds you will usually burp. Very fast relief!

I have had like kidney stone, but with one thing or another including heat I was able to get the pain to subside. Last year I had an attack I could not get over, vomiting, pulsing pain, the whole bit. When I went to the doctor they found two kidney stones. They also found one atrophied kidney. The doctor said it was merely an empty sac hanging there. When I asked how this could have happened, he said that kidney stone had probably been bouncing around in the kidney for year and it had totally destroyed the inner working of my kidney. I am living a normal life but with only one kidney. Take care of yourself. I care.

Kidney Stones:
I had kidney stones for the last 3 days and they got very painful yesterday so I treated them by drinking the juice of a fresh lemon, this helped some but still really painful so 30 minutes later I took 2 oz. apple cider vinegar followed by several ozs. water. I took my first lemon yesterday at abt 2:00PM.
My pain ease somewhat but still very painful. At abt 6:00 PM I took 2 more oz. of apple cider vinegar. Went to bed early...by 8. I hurt off and on most of night started hurting in several places like I had additional stones. Pain got weaker toward morning but was still hurting, pain scale abt 5, got up at 5am, fixed a cup of hot tea..Celestial brand Chai, added Splenda and non dairy creamer...within 30 minutes of drinking the tea my kidney stone pains are gone.
The apple cider vinegar is said to break up stones and the herbal tea has cardamom as one of it's ingredients and it helps kidney stones.
Right now I've been pain free for a couple of hours.

Hi RUSSALKA, I use garlic fresh in cooking and I buy it in capsules to use as a natural antibiotic.
It is in my opinion better used fresh if you can tolerate it.

My research shows that white ginger is Not edible. If
team members have more info maybe they will share their knowledge.
Your plant does look similar to a ginger plant but I couldn't find one with the same color flowers to compare.

Hi CEB, I visited your sparkpage to see where you are from...since you are from Alabama the sassafrass
should grow wild in your area. My trees are growing wild in woods near my house. They are common in fence rows along highways and roadways. New saplings appear along the rootline of older trees and can be easily dug up and transplanted.
I'll do some research on the white ginger.
I couldn't identify the plant on your sparkpage but one of our members might be able to do so.

One or two cloves of garlic a day (preferably raw) for high blood pressure, to lower my cholesterol, and as part of my anti-inflammatory diet for arthritis. Eat parsley at the same time to combat the smell.

All four of my grandparents lived well into their 90's and (amongst other things) garlic was a main staple in their diets.

That sounds great but I don't know where to get sassafrass plants. Where do you get yours? Also have you ever heard of "white ginger." Is it good to eat?

I dig my own sassafrass roots and keep a supply drying for future use. I cut the roots into 3/4" x 5"
pieces that will easily fit into a pan to boil. I boil 3-4 pieces each time for about 15 minutes or until the water is a dark reddish color. I then pour it in a jar or pitcher and add water just like making regular tea. Add sweetener of your choice.
The sassafrass is especially good this time of year because the sap is down and the roots are juicy.

Bar of soap in your socks for foot and leg cramps. Google it! It works. Also calcium/magnesium/D or coral calcium works great to prevent them. If I quit taking it the leg cramps come back quickly. I have to use 2000 mgs. For some people quinine works but it has not worked for me.

Cotton Root-For cases of bleeding one of which may be heavy menstruation.
Use freshly gathered or dried roots. Wash and boil 4 oz. in 1 1/4 qt of water for about 5-10 minutes. Let cool , strain if necesary. Sweeten if desired and sip as tea. Bleeding should be much less within 24 hours.
Take abt 4 oz. every half hour until you use a qt. of tea.
I have used this one and it works great.
As usual...before you use any home remedy be sure and look up all pros and cons of the plant before you use. Certain conditions can be aggravated by some home remedies.

Comfrey is one of my favorite herbs but I learned it is safe for topical use only and ingesting it isn't recommended because a reaction is likely. Love it, love it as an ointment or paste though.

Swollen areas such as jaw from tooth...use crushed Comfrey plant leaves and apply directly to area, may cause rash if left on too long if you have sensitive skin.
To draw out small areas of infection...crushed leaves of House Leek/Leak plant applied directly to site, leave on overnight. Hold in place with tape or gauze.
Toothache or ulcer on gums...break Aloe Vera leaf and apply juice directly to gums as needed.

You may post remedies that you use regularly. One that I use is a mixture of baking soda, a little salt and vaseline to make a paste for insect bites.
It stops the itching and dries them up quickly.
