I would second the advice to familiarize yourself with the course. I just did my first half, which was in a different city. I struggled to pace myself/maintain consistent energy levels in the last few miles just because I wasn't familiar enough with the course to know where it ended. Otherwise, it was an amazing experience. Best of luck, runners!

i just did the Capital City Half in Columbus Ohio on May 3rd. halfs are incredibly fun due to the festive atmosphere and the crowds. be careful you don't start out too fast on an adrenaline high. it might cause you burn out before the end. just take it easy and enjoy the comraderie of fellow runners...

I pledge to never see my highest weight on a scale EVER again

It's actually pretty simple. Either you do it, or you don't!

I am a slow runner...12 minutes is way too aggressive for me! I hope to get there one day, though.

I'm doing my first half in November. I'm really excited. The only goal I'm setting for myself is to keep an average pace of 12 min / mile. Good luck on yours!

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."

Good point. The first one you just want to finish! You'll experiment a lot with hydration/gels, etc. Stick with the training plan- it works and will get you to 13 miles! Good luck!
Oh- check out the course your running too ahead of time if you don't already know it, it helps to know what type of course it will be to prepare for- out and back, a single loop and flat or hilly!

Just do it...and next time you'll PR. The first time is a "freebie".
But train anyhow!
