I hear ya!!! I'm signed up for my first half on 9/11 in Chicago - and the weather even then can be dicey. I ran in Chicagoland this past weekend and, well, can we say BRUTAL??? The temp climbed 8 degrees in just 30 minutes!!!

Yea - I think the day after DOES count! My husband now wants to run this with me which makes the decision to do it much easier. Now to get the courage up to actually plunk down the money and commit to it! After they closed down the race this past weekend in Chicago, it does make me second guess the whole "running a half marathon in August in Chicago" idea. ...

I did Vegas the inaugural year, and I'm currently signed up to do Savannah and Vegas this year.

I have actually run 7 half marathons, and I've done everything from races that had fewer than 1000 people to ING Miami, with approximately 20,000 runners. RnR races tend to be more of a party atmosphere. If you're looking to make a PR, it may not be the best place, due to crowding, etc. But, if you're looking for a memorable experience, with lots of fun they can worth the entry fee.

I'm officially in for Vegas. WooHoo! (Thanks Nicholas for the code.)

I can't wait until Sunday to experience my first RnR event (doing the half relay). I've decided against the new NYE run because of the cost - I can do one for $100 cheaper in November ( a repeat of my 1st from last year) and qualify for half fanatics that way!

I'll probably wait to go for a heavy metal next year by doing Portland and then probably San Diego and Vegas again.

PR races:
Nov 26, 2011 - San Dimas Turkey Trot 10K (1:07:34)
Dec 26, 2011 - Operation Jack Half marathon (2:27:44)
April 1, 2012 - Carlsbad 5000 5k (29:17)

I *technically* haven't done one yet.

I ran the Philly Distance Run in 2009, and they had lots of bands and stuff along the way, it was really a great race. In 2010 they changed it to the Philly RNR half. Apparently they changed the course a bit, but most of it was the same as when I did it the previous year. Several people I know ran it and said they really enjoyed it.

I also have a friend that did Virginia Beach, and she said it was a lot of fun as well. Very crowded and lots of traffice (its Labor Day weekend), but overall very fun.

Be fearless.

I would jump at $72 - they just opened registration for a New Year's Eve run about 1.5 hour from me in So Cal and it is $137 today and then $150 and $165 by this weekend. They claim it is going to be very VIP. I still don't see how a Champagne Brunch and the long sleeve tech shirt really make up for that $$$$. I'm so torn as that race would make me a half fanatic!

It's the Vegas RnR that got me into this half marathon thing. I haven't run it, but I asked a friend who runs marathons about how long it would take to train for a half and sent her a link to the strip at night site. She lives in South Beach. I live in Canada.

She promised that she and her husband would run it with me.

How could I refuse?

Thora (LOOKINFIT1) - If you decide to do it....I'll see you there, but it is a big sommittment of time. I do events to keep me motivated to improve and give myself benchmarks. I run because I LOVE what it does for me. You have plenty of time to prepare....I would just ask myself why I want to do this and do I want to invest the time. In reality, it's really only 6 or so hours a week, but every week until the end of Oct. Let us know what you decide?

Thora, unless you want it badly for you, I'd skip it! And, it does take up quite a bit of time. But, I literally started running last June 1st. I could barely make it a minute! And, at the end of November, I did a half marathon with a 2 min run/1min walk interval. I don't remember the date of the SL race, but I'd think you'd have time to train...IF it is what you really want!

I'm holding off on a full marathon right now because I know they will always be there & I'd rather run one when I could do it in 5 hours instead of 6! And, with only one HM done, I'm not really sure I want to run that far...or train that long! But, some days, when friends hear I run & ask if I've done a marathon, I want to do it...mainly to impress! But, for now, I'm waiting,

Hope this helps a little!

I don't remember how it came up today but in a conversation about running someone mentioned the Rocknroll in St. Louis in October. I didn't realize it is the first year for it until I read that on this thread. I also don't know why, when I have never run in a race, I think I want to run a half. (It's just as easy to walk out my door and run than to pay and drive somewhere to run.) So... Why would I want to do this I wonder? I can do 4.5 easily and it's not until October but is this realistic? I think I would like to be able to say I've run this distance? Maybe because I'm turning 40 the next month? Maybe because some of my co-workers run - but there is absolutely no pressure from them. Maybe because... ??

I do have the summer to spend getting ready, but I am returning to grad school this fall, working full time and being a busy mom and wife. I can't spend all my free time getting ready, that's just a fact. There is no one to train with/run with where I live. It would be just me.

Thanks for letting me ramble a minute. I just don't know.

I'm running the inaugural Savannah race this November. Originally I was totally pumped because I've heard great things about the whole RnR series and it's an event much bigger than what we've ever had.

However, they just released the course and it is horrid. It goes through some seriously ugly and sktechy parts of town. The swag and after-party better make up for it! :-)

I hope to do Chicago in my future because it's my hometown and after hearing the reviews, Nashville is on my list!

I've got this.

So far, I've run San Antonio and Nashville. I thought it would be cool to run them all but then I've noticed that they keep adding more and more to the series! They're even adding one in Madrid, Spain. I'll do more of them though because they really are fun!

Whoa! When I saw Pasadena, I assumed it had to be some Pasadena other than California since there is already one in Los Angeles. My parents live just 10 miles down the road - and running around the Rose Bowl is beautiful (tho it could be pretty hilly, especially if it goes through Old Town).

But, now I see it's only a half marathon and there's no full. I'm actually surprised by this. I see the RNR Los Angeles is the same. I thought all the RNR's were both fulls and halfs. Hmmm...

They are killing me .... I saw the Pasadena announcement yesterday. I live 50 miles from there so how can I pass that up?

Except my schedule would be crazy and I'm not sure how my knee will hold up. (And my credit card will be feeling it for sure!)

It would look like this - I'd pretty much be in constant training. I'm not fast, and I'd probably only go for a PR in Vegas. All the others would be to have fun and take in my surroundings mostly.

mid Oct - Nike Women's Half (Registered)
early Dec - RnR Vegas
late Dec - RnR Indian Wells (if they ever release the info on this one)
late Jan - Tinkerbell Half
mid Feb - RnR Pasadena
mid/late May - RnR Portland (Registered)

PR races:
Nov 26, 2011 - San Dimas Turkey Trot 10K (1:07:34)
Dec 26, 2011 - Operation Jack Half marathon (2:27:44)
April 1, 2012 - Carlsbad 5000 5k (29:17)

I have yet to run one, but I am hooked already. I'll be doing the half relay in San Diego in just over a month. (Eek!) I'll be registering for Vegas at that expo.

I'm eagerly awaiting details on the Indian Wells, New Years Eve run since that is less than 2 hours from me.

I was planning on doing LA too, but I'm running the Nike Women's 2 weeks prior, so probably not the best idea for me right now.

Oh and I've already signed up for the inaguaral race in Portland for May 2012 - I have family there, and I couldn't resist at just $55 on May 1st.

Running halfs is now the way I'll be getting in my vacations. I am young, have no children yet so now is my time to enjoy my life and use the vacation time that I earn working hard!

PR races:
Nov 26, 2011 - San Dimas Turkey Trot 10K (1:07:34)
Dec 26, 2011 - Operation Jack Half marathon (2:27:44)
April 1, 2012 - Carlsbad 5000 5k (29:17)

I can't believe it. After reading this thread I had to go sign up for the Chicago RnR. $110+ for registration, plus another 2 bills for hotel. Wow. This will be the most expensive half I've done (granted, it will only be my 3rd, but the other 2 are local) so it better be worth it!!!

I too just ran the Country Music Half in Nashville. It was my first as well and it was so amazing I can't even begin to rave about how awesome this event was.

I also have friends that have done the Phoenix Rock N Roll and enjoyed it, but once they saw the Nashville course they said that course was incredible compared to Phoenix!

I just did my first RnR event, the Country Music (half) in Nashville. I was blown away by how much fun it was!! The event was very well organized, the course was interesting, and the crowd support and runner morale was second to NONE! When I tried to think of anything I *didn't* like about this race, I really had a hard time coming up with anything. YES, the registration fee was $$$ but I feel like they gave me my money's worth, between the nice tech shirt and medal, all the food they gave us on race day, the expo, and how well organized pretty much everything was. I highly recommend the Nashville race to anyone who has a chance to check it out!! I really would love to do other events in the series, especially Vegas, Seattle, and New Orleans.

Going to the site now to check it out. I have a message out for my baby sis to see if she will be in town. I am running my first half on Sept 11th, so that should give me recovery time to be able to do the St. Louis RNR. It would be awesome meeting up with some fellow Sparkers! IT'S A GO!!! Registering before the end of the month - sis is excited for the visit too! Might finally have a family member show up for an event! WOOHOO!!!

I did the Las Vegas R&R HM last December (it was my second HM). It was a very fun race except that I was having issues with my legs =( I swore I wouldn't do another one but then I see the medals and I can't help myself. I want them all! I am currently registered for San Diego (where I live) and plan to do Los Angeles & Indian Wells on New Year's Eve.

My advice if you do Las Vegas is to stay off your feet the day before. I didn't think we were walking that much, but my feet felt it the next day.

Upcoming Races:
01-20-13 Tinkerbell HM

Personal Bests:
5 K - Carlsbad 5000 34:30
10K - St. Patrick's Day 1:13:48
HM - San Diego Rock & Roll 2:51:54

@TRILLIUM22 - Yes, I've been checking the site. I see they finally added a time to it. I haven't registered yet, but will definitely do it before the 30th. Oh, don't forget about Lucky 13. If you register on the 13th of the month, you get a $13 discount.

I have heard so much about the Vegas half, and with it being a night run this time, have already added to our agenda! I can't wait! Hoping to be able to get my husband to do it too. So far, I've only done the Dallas Inaugural RNR and the San Antonio RNR and enjoyed both of those.

One more date for the St. Louis RnR. Prices jump go up on June 30th. I'm in town and will register for the full close to the 30th. At 49 I can't quite shake the possibility of an injury out of my head. I'm real excited to see the route. They have been adding stuff to the website in the last 3 weeks.

I ran Nashville Country MusicMarathon and It had the best support of any of the other races I've done. I'm from St. Louis and run the local Halfs and also done the Memphis St. Jude Half Marathon. Nashville was my first full marathon and I could not have been more pleased. I felt Memphis was better run than the Go St. Louis or the Lewis and Clark. The Lewis and Clark is the local race that is being dropped with the coming of the RnR St. Louis. I will run RnR St. Louis in Oct and it will be interesting to me to see if it too is well organized.

I ran the Las Vegas RNR half last year and I can't say there is any other RNR race that I really *have* to do. This year it's on The Strip AT NIGHT which should be incredible. It's a destination race, for sure. They had so much food and drinks at the end that I couldn't even fit in one of everything! And I'm not partial because I live here or anything, either. :)

OOOH! Vegas at night sounds like FUN!!!

I have run one RnR - New Orleans in 2010. I did not care for it, other than the company - I ran it with a bunch of Sparkers, which was AWESOME! It was the most expensive race I have ever signed up for and they gave out one bottle of water at the end and one bag of chips.

That said, it was the first year they held it there and I think they had a hard time getting volunteers.

I am running Seattle in June and I am hoping that it will be a better experience. Definitely willing to give it another shot!

I did 6 RnRs last year (New Orleans, Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Antonio and Las Vegas). While they are quite pricey, they have been, for the most part great events. My all-time favorites are Vegas, Seattle and Chicago. I would not run New Orleans or San Antonio again, not because the towns weren't fun, but the roads were very uneven and the course, especially SA, left a lot to be desired.

I am running Seattle again this June and Vegas (night time down the strip).

From what people tell me, you have to do at least one race in this series at some point in your running career.

Have you done one?
What was it like?
Would you run one again? Why or why not?
Which would you recommend? Why?
Running any this year? Which one?
