I think it would depend on how many kids and/or teachers are sick. I realize that it's hard on the parents when kids are home for any reason, but kids who are sick really should be kept home in order to help prevent the spread of illness. It makes it hard on the schools if too many kids are out sick or coming in and getting other kids sick. It also makes it hard if too many teachers are out sick, because eventually, they will run out of substitutes to call in to cover.

It depends on what it is. If there is something really nasty going around like measles, then yes. Otherwise, just some very strict policies can do the trick.
Our old daycare had very strict policies about bringing your child in if they had been sick. Any vomiting or diarrhea had to be gone from the system for at least 24 hours before the child could return. It was very inconvenient to stay home from work with a child who was healthy, just to wait out the 24 hours, but as I saw other parents getting gastrointestinal illnesses one after the other because their daycares weren't as strict, I started to appreciate the policy. I'd rather miss a week of work once a year than a few days 5 times a year. That same daycare even made us take our child's temperature upon arrival for a few months and if it was above normal for that particular child they wouldn't let you in. THAT was overkill and thankfully didn't last long.

It probably does make things very difficult for parents, but I also think it would be effective for stopping the spread of illness (illness makes things difficult for parents, too).

Do you think it's a good idea to close school so the sickness does't spread or does it just make things difficult for parents?
