Just a fun chat time - not related to pre-diabetes - just personal joy ...Our daughter announced to the families that they are pregnant - I have known since Thusday when the Dr confirmed their home test but now the whole world can now - they knew there was to be a family gathering on hubbys side of family today and chose to wait the few extra days to tell. but they wanted to tell me they heard their baby heart beat on the 5th anniversary of my getting my heart stents - so now a double reason to remember May 23rd for always. This is our sweet daughter that waited for the right man til she was 37, he is perfect for her and also never married - now baby on the way - Happy Momma!!!

Hello everyone.
My blood work in November showed Pre-Diabetic numbers and again in February. A1C.

Since then, I have been seeing a dietician, learning portion size, shopping mindfully, and working on exercise both for my heart ( triglycerides and cholesterol and A1C., mistake, itís the LDL number that is out of range! )
I plan to get my fasting blood work for Complete Metabolic panel including the Total cholesterol, the A1C test was not included on the prescription.( Cardio Dr.) etc. this Thursday as I have follow-up appt. next Wed. 05/16.
Iím interested in what ideas for breakfast? The A1C test was not included on the Prescrtion lab work ( on re reading).

PERDONATO - thanks for stopping by. I'm in GA after living in the NE, including Maine, for many years. Indeed, not having to shovel snow is wonderful! Daily tips are posted on the team wall, so scroll through some of the past ones and find ones that help you.

Hello everyone. I'm new here so thought I would drop by to say hello and get to know others on the team. I just found out I'm officially pre-diabetic yesterday which wasn't the best news, but I'm here to try and fix that!
I'm retired and now live in Florida. I'm originally from Maine. Sure enjoy being away from the cold and the snow! Looking forward to getting back to swimming. That is our major form of exercise now since my husbands leg gets numb when we walk. Not fun for him! We have a pool here in our community so as soon as it warms a bit more and the threat of daily rain goes I'll be in!! Hope everyone is having a great day.

Good Evening Pre-Diabetic Sparkers,
I returned from my trip with my sister on Weds., Feb. 27. It was a great trip and I can't thank enough my sister for planning the whole thing for us. Now she's trying to figure out how much I owe her!!

The Plane trip from Baltimore to Scottsdale, AZ was longer than I had expected and my ears started killing me when we made our descent. I was chewing gum but it didn't seem to matter. It's been a long time since I was on a plane and I forgot how my ears react. We had 3 days in Scottsdale watching the Arabian Horse show, going to a museum and the Taliesin West house built by Frank Lloyd Wright. We also had lunch one day with a member of another Spark team that I am on. That was a treat. I had never met her before.

The trip to the Grand Canyon was great but there were also several inches of snow on the ground. It gave the Canyon a different look. I had never been there before so I was amazed by it.

Our next stop was a long drive to Riverside, CA to stay with our first cousin. His wife just died the day after Christmas but he was happy to see us.

The plane trip home was uneventful, shorter and my ears didn't hurt on descent.

The rest of this past week I've been getting back to my routine. Not quite there yet. I tried not to eat too badly while away from home but I also didn't get much exercise.

Glad to be home even though it was a great trip. We had rain and snow in Scottsdale and have rain and snow here at home. Not much difference in temps so that wasn't an issue. We did have one day in Riverside, CA that was "warmish".

I, too, turn 70 in March and I find it best not to think of age as growing old but growing wiser.

Do you remember when you were in your teens and you thought a person who was over 40 old?

As my hair turns gray, I thank God for the blessings I have had throughout the years. I now know what I like and dislike and I have modified what I can and can no longer do (like crawling up a ladder, jogging, running). When I look into the mirror I see lines and wrinkles but I look at them as evidence of where smiles and laughter have been.

Richard Gere once said ...do not regret growing old, it is a privilege denied to many. Act as you always have, your younger friends enjoy you the way you are!

@Krys - That's nice to know. I have nothing against the younger generation (we were all there once) but at this time in life I'm trying to figure out what my place is and how I'm supposed to act and feel. Most of my friends are a lot younger than me (I could be their mother) and it helps to know people my age and see how they are handling this new challenge (of growing old). Thanks for letting me know you are "with me".

We began the week long celebration of my 70th birthday today with hubby's card and then surprise arrival of the daughter and SIL - they went to church with us, loaded the back of their truck with some of her stored "stuff" and brought me back to the city with them - will rest tomorrow and then Tuesday travel to the big city of Spokane 3 hours away for her business meetings and stay in ritzy hotels and dine out and visit family. Adventures! It is snowing again here praying for good travel on Tuesday.

Good morning, Team,
@Termitemom - Good luck with your hip replacement. I had no idea that you could have it on an outpatient basis. Knock on wood - I haven't had to have anything replaced yet but I have had some outpatient surgeries. I have known several ladies who have had hip or knee replacements. My prayers will be with you that the surgery will be a success and you won't be i too much pain.

@Krys - I enjoyed the Sparkmail for this week. I knew some photoshopping was done to photos of models but didn't realize it was so widespread. We all should definitely love ourselves for who we are and how we look in the mirror. I have 2 doctors who keep bugging me to lose weight, though one has praised me for the small amount I have managed to lose in the past couple months. I'm not so sure basing weight on BMI (you can't change your height) and using your weight (with clothes) as a person's true weight is a very good calculation of what you should weigh. I'm working on getting lighter but as to whether I'll make what the BMI scale says I should weigh, I'm not worrying about it.

I'm leaving for a 9 day vacation with my sister to Scottsdale, AZ and Riverside, CA on the 19th. Starting to get nervous about it, though I'm sure everything will go fine. Just hoping any snow stays away until then!!

I hope everyone is having a great day.

I had no pain, but mine was different from yours so I'm not sure I'm qualified to address that. I did wind up in rehab for 3 weeks and had to slowly progress to walking, sitting, etc. Again, mine was a whole different story.

Krys, thank you so much!

Yes, I wanted to have the anterior surgery, it is much better, less painful, and you recover faster. Unfortunately the surgeon yesterday said it is not recommended because the femur is damaged and he will have to bury the implant deep into the bone. So he needs room and he will have to go the posterior route. I am very disappointed.

Another thing I wanted to ask you: because of my son I requested the surgery to be done as an outpatient. The surgeon said he would do it, reserving the possibility to keep me overnight if I am not doing well. He said that however I would feel pain like hell. What do you think? Is this true?

Pending insurance approval, I am scheduled for March 19th.

Ok, tomorrow is Dr day - try to get good simple explanations but complete and Real!!!
Tell him you have to know ahead to prepare for care for you AND FOR THE SON.
Sounds like you need to emphasize to your son the things that will be the same.
That you WILL be there,
you WILL be the same person,
you WILL have pain but that you have been having pain and that this will make it get better. And then just rest in the Lord's provision for all to work together for good. Gentle hugs from across the miles - .

Good point Krys!

I have avascular necrosis of unknown origin on my left hip so yes, my case might be different although a hip replacement is the same treatment.

How did they do it for you? Anterior, posterior?

I guess the surgeon will give me all the details tomorrow.

Linda - what a powerful prayer!

Termitemom - make sure the doc also tells you about the physical therapy afterwrds and what that will entail as well as how long it might take.. I was very stiff from my hip surgery and had some excellent therapists help me get back to walking, etc.Since mine was from a fall, not sure if that's the same or not.

I am not really worried about me. I know it will be okay and I can go through this. I have also heard that a hip replacement is much easier than a knee.

MOST KNEE SURGERY TAKES LESS THAN AN HOUR TO PREFORM AND YOU ARE SENT HOME THE SAME DAY. JUST PREPARE A GOOD PLACE IN YOUR HOME TO SIT AND HAVE THINGS ON A TABLE CLOSE BY, LIKE KLEENEX, GLASSES, SNACKS, BOTTLES OF WATER, ETC SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET UP. YOU WILL NEED SOMEONE TO ASSIST YOU. JUST BE SURE TO TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT ALL OF YOUR POST OP RECOVERY NEEDS. THAT SHOULD HELP RELIEVE SOME OF YOUR ANXIETY.

Praying for a peace that passes understanding to come for you and especially to fill your son with assurance that you are OK, that you will be home and you will be better and not hurt so much once healing has happened. I pray especially for one special frind to come along side him that he can relate to and that there will be no excessive anxiety.
Keep us in the loop of how to be encouraging you. God bless you real good - you are being a mentor for us who may face this down the road.

My church will be able to help, but I am still very worried. My son can have anxiety attacks and become violent... I have no idea how he will react when I am in the hospital.
How long did you stay? Hopefully I should get details/answers when I schedule the surgery on Thursday.

TERMITEMOM - I had one a couple of years ago when I fell and broke the femur bone. Do you have a church group or a special friend that can help with your son during your recovery?

Thank you!

I feel bad because I did everything I could to avoid surgery (a big problem for me because I live alone with my handicapped son), and I failed...

I went to see an orthopedist this morning to get a second opinion.
I need a hip replacement, and sooner rather than later. That is is the only thing that will get rid of the pain I have been having for now 3 months.
I have an appointment with a surgeon next Thursday afternoon.

Got the taxes started! Using anew Quicken program - my other one was 10 years old and wanted new one on the laptop. But that means entering al new categories etc Will be slower for the first couple months then should do fine Ö

Doing well with blood sugar, gluten free and intermittent fasting and hoping to see some dropping on the scales if I can stay faithful to the efforts - less mobility is keeping the scale pretty even.

Lost another Father figure from my life today - seems like each one just draws me closer HOME. I kind of think through past losses and can encourage those that are close family to these great men of God. I have been blessed to be surrounded by good friends and family and I am thankful! Feeling kind of nostalgic - the 70th birthday coming up is making me feel really old! Counting blessing!

Love Anne of Green Gables, kindred quite possibly. Yes, it is good to share info and help others.
I, too, used to have the burning and pins in needles in my feet, so I can sympathize with you. I also hope your two sons will be okay during this horrible shutdown .... such a terrible abuse of our citizens. Just hearing the word proud is cruel. Prayers your way and for your sons.

Sunshine - I think we must be kindred spirits[line from Anne of Green Gables] Being a past ulcer patient, the red pepper does not work for me but Puritan Pride has been my frind for years and I even have Dr recommendation for Vit D, CoQ10 and Mag malate and B12- I also supplement Alpha Lipoic acid and Bcomplex and Dr is always pleased with my supplement routine and questions - has even referred other patients to me for encouragement since our rural area does not have a nutritionist. Being a former nurse, the Drs have shared my name with patients for 35+ ears - I don't claim expertise - but study daily and sort out my own health needs/helps and share with others happily. I am blessed . The pre-diabetes really threw me at first but after a year of studying and working on my own, I also am beginning to feel onfident to share that too.

Linda..Some of the most common deficiencies linked to neuropathy are deficiencies of vitamin B1, B6, B12, vitamin D and Magnesium. tTy adding Red pepper to your meals...it eases pain and improves blood circulation. I add red pepper flakes to omeletes, chili, meat loaf, stews, etc.

A 400 mg. of a magnesium supplement may help as well. My nutritionist recommended that and a vitamin D supplement. I also take a 120MG of the recommended COQ10 supplement which helps mitigate neuropathy and assists the heart.

you can check out Puritans Pride supplements on line, i found they are most reasonable for supplements...and of course speak with your health care team before supplementing.

Just to add on about doctors, most of them have no clue how to treat senior citizens and those that specialize in that are few in number.

Sunshine, I turn 70 in mid-Feb have progressive neuropathy for several years before Dx of pre-diabetes. I am proactive with nutrition and fighting to keep my mobility but seem to loose ground - still working at it though and determined to do the best I can. It has helped me to be accountable for my fasting blood sugar every morning. Also am tracking all my food - and adding it up at end of day for cal - carbs - fats - saturated fats - proteins and fibers and drinking my water , tea and one coffee per day for 104 ounces (weight 206 this week)

Blessings and keep working at being the best you can be - Sparks is a great place to get knowledge and encouragement.

Doctors aren't trained in nutrition and refer patients to nutritionists, dieticians and diabetic educators. They should know about diabetes though and be on top of it more. Sometimes we have to push for ourselves and be proactive.

I am quite surprised doctors are telling people diabetes is no big deal after 70. I am turning 70 and my doc is still concerned since older diabetics face higher risks of such complications as heart attacks, stroke, kidney disease, vision problems and blindness and diabetes-related nerve damage. I take diabetes seriously and will continue to monitor my nutrition, move every 20 minutes and walk for my health. I WOULD LIKE TO LIVE ANOTHER 20 YEARS WITHOUT COMPLICATIONS.

Happy Sunday, Spark Team members,
Snow began to fall here in Maryland at 4:30 PM yesterday and is supposed to continue all day today with starts and stops. So far we have received 4 1/2". For me---It could stop right now!!
It's pretty but causes a lot of problems. I guess I'll get some exercise today helping my husband shovel the driveway.

@Donna - I too heard from my primary physician that being pre-diabetic after 70 is not a big deal. None of my "several" doctors who've noticed that I'm pre-diabetic have mentioned anything to me about checking my blood glucose, eating in any particular way, etc. until I asked them. The couple that answered me just mentioned drinking more water, lose weight, get exercise, eat lots of vegetables. So, that is what I'm attempting to do.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

My doc said I didn't have to, but if I wanted to track it she would write me a prescription for the meter, etc. I have used it to see which foods seem to affect me the worse, so I'm glad I got it.

I too find I am confused about this. I'm from Canada and was advised that I didn't need to check my blood sugar yet. I'm 76 and have been to a dietician and that helped but it seems that its not a big deal to be pre-diabetic when you are in your 70,s. I go every six months for a lab test and April is my next one. I've managed to lose 12 lbs. so I'm hoping I'm on the right track. I guess I won't know till then.

Good Afternoon, Team,
We are having several days with the high temps in the 30's and SNOW is scheduled for Sunday.
So my walking exercise has ceased for awhile since I have asthma and breathing cold air is a no-no. I've been doing strengthening exercises.

Thanks for the suggestions about researching pre-diabetes and concentrating on one food at a time.

TERMITEMOM - So sorry to hear about all the surgeries you need to have. I wish you the best with all of that.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

I got devastating news from the spine doctor this morning. In brief, I need a knee replacement, a hip replacement, and a spine fusion (not necessarily together or in that order). I have 4 bulging discs impinging nerve roots in my back, and half of the hip bone is literally dead, with no blood feeding it. I have been in agony for 7 weeks, with very little sleep and feel like a zombie. They will give me an epidural on Friday but are not optimistic it will work for the pain, because the damage is too extensive. I need to contact an orthopedic surgeon. In the mean time, the doctor put me on Vicodin, so I hope I can at least get a good night's sleep tonight. I have no idea what I will do with my handicapped son, who needs constant care and stability, especially with his work. The recovery will take 4-6 months. My church is willing to do whatever is necessary to help, but pray my son can weather the storm without any major anxiety attack. As for me, I will need to find a solution because my house is a split level with stairs.

Bonnie, your anxiety is normal and if you try to learn about one food a day that will help you in making the right choices. If you go to the FAQ / Resources Forum and read the nutrition tips, that may help ease some of youR anxiety. Walking is the best form of exercise, and yes, water is essential. emoticon

Bonnie - new research confirms some of what your doctor said, but that doesn't mean you can't reverse it. Yes, fitness helps and watching carbs (more so than calories) can be a big help as well.

Maybe this article will be of help?

Hi Team,
I have been so confused about being pre-diabetic. None of my doctors seem to think it's a big enough deal to talk to me about.

On my yearly appointment to see my Endocrinologist in November about the goiter in my throat, I asked him about it because I know he treats diabetics also. He didn't seem very concerned but did speak to me about how to place the food on my plate--% for protein, starches, etc. That was helpful but didn't help my anxiety.

A couple weeks later when I had an appointment with my primary physician I asked her about it. She said that my doctors didn't get overly concerned with my pre-diabetic status because I'm 71. She said a majority of those in my age group have it and it is because we have more fat than lean muscle in our bodies at this age. She did tell me to exercise, watch my weight and drink lots of water.

Anyone else have this experience??

Yes, Dr told me to plan to check my morning fasting blood glucose very day the rest of my life.

I also spent about a month checking 2 hours after each meal just learning what spiked my sugars and what I could have that did not cause it to raise. Now I only check if I "feel weird" and if I know I have over done or under fed during the day I will check a bed time one and be extra aware of feelings when up to bathroom in the night -

I figure it is worth the cost of a test strip to have knowledge and peace of mind.

Yes, checking your BG every day is recommended.

Linda, my cardiologist also does not want me to do KETO. I am sugar free and grain free. I watch added sugars like a hawk and I control my fats.

Chatting with you about our blood sugars and how do we keep 'em down.
Cardiologist does not want me to do KETO but so many of the meals and foods and recipes do fit my criteria of cutting the carbs, need to be gluten free for celiac so basically am grain free and but must fight to keep SATURATED FATS down to less than half of my total fat intake... So how are you-all doing it?
