I know. I hate drinking it hot right now with the weather right now. It makes such a difference though and I feel like I am indulging myself with my dainty tea cup and my little setup I get going with it. So, I guess the mind trick helps me ignore the hot tea. :-)

We actually don't use any bright lights (unless absolutely necessary) after bath time (about 7:30pm). A problem for me is that even if I read non-fiction, I still become fascinated by it. I've had these issues reading books about quantum physics. Maybe I should start drinking some sleepytime tea at bedtime again, though actually, I've gone more for sweet dreams. Basically the same thing just the Celestial Seasonings vs. Bigelow. It's been so hot, that thinking about drinking hot tea is difficult. And it just doesn't work as well iced.

Audrey, it's hard to adjust to a new schedule. It always takes me weeks before I do even if it is just an hour difference. I've really been working on my nighttime routine and it really does help. The key to book reading is picking up a boring book and not fiction. So, my nighttime reading tends to be the self-help or parenting books. My daytime reading is my fiction or job related books. I also have been using the nightshade feature on my Kindle for those books at night and it helps as well.

My successful nighttime routine is:
1) Make the sleepytime tea at least 1.5 hours before I am wanting to be in the room (9 PM) plus light my lavendar/vanilla fragrance candle in the bedroom.
2) Drink the tea leisurely over the next 1 hour (9-10) while doing my mood chart, taking medication, and reading a final episode or reading some more book. I also have the high light in the front room turned off and turn on my desk lamp so that it starts to help us calm down. It helps the whole family I have noticed.
3) At 10 PM, say my goodnight's and move into the room. I turn on a sleepy playlist on Spotify so that is heard while I'm prepping for bed. I fill my CPAP water tank, wash my face, put on my night gown, journal, and then turn off the music and read until I feel drowsy. Blow out the candle, I'm then in bed and off to slumber land within 30 minutes.

I've been really working on it and it truly does work. I wake naturally between 7-7:30 AM.

Suzy, I can totally understand the guilt over passing the gene down. It's the worst a parent has to deal with because you know first hand what a struggle it will be for the rest of their lives. I felt this same guilt with my daughter who experienced a major depression when she was in 4th grade (to the point of wanting to cut). Now we have determined she has social anxiety (one of my anxieties as well) and OCD (something of mine as well). It is hard to watch her struggle. One thing I have noticed is that she finds comfort in hearing about my own coping mechanisms and understanding where it comes from. Unlike myself, I didn't have a parent or family member there to help me understand. That is the advantage you have. You will be able to understand, support, and love him as no one else can. That is his comfort from you. You can't control that it was passed down but you can control how you can help him cope.

I am sensitive to stress as well. It seems to be even more so over these past few years. I feel like in order for me to successfully keep my bipolar under control I have to keep my stress level so low but that's nearly impossible and unrealistic. We can't live in a bubble. I need to find better coping mechanisms. My psychiatrist also says it's because we haven't gotten me to stable and that once I am I'll be able to handle more stress levels. It's hard right now.

It's hard to remember to do something when you least feel like it. I am horrible at giving in. I am proud that you didn't.

I like that advice... that when you don't want to do something is when you need to do it the most.

I need to remember and follow that advice a bit more myself.

I have to adjust to a new schedule. Xena doesn't start school till almost an hour after she did last year, so we don't need to be up as early, but I still need to nail down that bedtime. I've been getting caught up in reading before bed, which may be good for "me time", but I get wrapped up in it and lose track of time. Last night that meant I didn't go to sleep till after midnight.

Xena gets out of school at 3:15 which is going to be interesting. Rob likes to be at work for 3, which means I have to get back home and walk to the school in a little less than 15 minutes. It's making me anxious about this afternoon

Just catching up by reading all the posts. I have been having some problems with depression & anxiety & EXTREME tiredness for the last 3 months. I am already on an anti-depressant as well as a mood stabilizer & other stuff. Provigil & Concerta which should help me stay awake.

I didn't want to go back on the Klonopin for the anxiety & it makes me TIRED. I had been on it for 25 years (that or Xanax) & got off it with extensive DBT, yoga, mindfulness, etc.

So wanted to keep doing those coping skills to reduce anxiety & depression. Got so bad my hair started falling out--a lot & suddenly.

That causes more stress & anxiety. Went to bipolar doc, dermo doc, internal medicine doc & all said STRESS. I had gone through a lot with my grown son having a very bad depression. It was very scary & traumatic for me, but he is now doing well on Wellbutrin (same anti-depressant I am on), but I am falling apart.

He had a very severe depressive episode in high school & got better after a year of medication & therapy, but was suicidal. My mother committed suicide & I have had several attempts (last one 10 years ago) so I got so scared & sad that I burdened him with these genes.

Anyway, started going to the gym with a NAMI co-facilitator of the support group I lead. Having someone who understands all you do & encourages without preaching, badgering, or "guilting" is a blessing.

Last week I called to cancel 30 minutes before we were to meet at the gym & it was after noon & I still hasn't gotten out of bed, showered, etc. She gently told me that I didn't need to shower before the gym as I do sweat a lot (mentioned by others here; embarrassing--I even sweat in yoga classes where others are wearing sweaters!!! Meds again) & that I would probably feel better if I did exercise some & got out of bed & out of the house. I still cancelled, but called her back 5 minutes later & said I would be there (though I REALLY didn't feel like going), but I tell you within 15 minutes my mood was totally uplifted--by the exercise & companionship.

She told me (as has my yoga instructor) that when I want to cancel is the time I most need to be there & will benefit the most & that is so true.

Need to go to bed. Try to get a sleep schedule going again. Best to all. ~Suzy

I totally get it! I do think school outings/events are rather late in the elementary years. Also, starting so early in the morning always baffled me.

We started our homeschooling and are on week 2. It's going quite well. She is in 7th grade she is able to do most of it on her own. She's been really motivated to get in and do her school work. She sticks to a schedule and likes to get all of it done before lunch. I'm very proud of her.

For me, been trying to implement a schedule again. Last 2 weeks have been shot with it due to the mood swings but determined, since I am feeling better, to get back into the swing of it. I'm not worrying about activity in with my daughter Mon-Thur and instead while she is doing her schoolwork I'll be doing my walks or weight routines. Fri morning will be our activity time period together. I've also determined that working in the afternoon would be better as well.

Anyways hoping to end August on a better note.

Me and the kiddos are tired today. Kindergarten orientation was definitely too late. We got out at 8, but by the time we picked up Isis and got home it was after 9. And the orientation was a nightmare. The teacher definitely has more than her fair share of students, and all of them are so far behind Xena's academic level, that I'm concerned it's going to hold her back or even cause her to regress. It pisses me off. She was tested academically when she was 4 and tested ready for K then. Now that she's 5 going on 6, she's way beyond. Her pre-K teachers agree that she's closer to 1st or even 2nd grade level academically. I mean I suppose her reading could be a little stronger, but I mean, that should be easily worked on if she had proper educators, which she won't have now because she's the only one at that level already. She read 12 books over the summer independently, and these kids don't even know their ABC's yet. I cannot even begin to say how much I HATE our school district. No wonder our standardized test scores are so poor. I didn't have this experience when I was her age because I went to private school. When I went to high school in the public school system I was ahead of my peers then, though maybe not as much as Xena is going to be. She's so intelligent!

Sorry for that rant. Like I said... very frustrated.

Hopefully I can get my meds today. Now that we have a car it's a lot easier to get to the pharmacy. I just hope I get my money from my stocks soon so I can get my Fioracet. I'm down to one and if I get a true migraine I have to take more than one.

Xena had her kindergarten orientation tonight. Who in their right mind schedules a mandatory meeting of 5 year olds at 6pm that doesn't end until near 8 or later. Have they not heard of dinner, baths, and bedtime?

I'm in a depression and I'm out of Prozac. I have to check when I'm done with this and see when is my next refill... I know it won't be long. I'm going to search my room again one last time to see if i can find it.

In the background Geo is playing No Man's Sky... They have it for the Playstation 4 and on computers. One of the goals is to get to the center of the universe, or you could fight aliens or what Geo is doing and just explore the planets that he comes across. It's an expensive game, but you start in the middle of nowhere and so getting to the center of the universe takes a long long time.

Geo is obsessed with this new game called "No Man Sky" where you explore the planets and galaxies. The game is so huge that there are millions of galaxies that all have been generated by a computer. It comes with life forms, aliens, exploring the planets and traveling through space, You can do whatever you want with it... You can rename the galaxies and animals you find. I like watching him play.

I used to play Spyro and Tomb Raider, but that's going back to PS2 days. Now it's the singing and dance games that I go for.

My daughter and hubby play video and console games together. They did Portal before and 2 more. They don't mind the shoot-em games at all and I think that's because they work together on it as a team. They do like to play games individually as well. I hate playing video and console games but find that I enjoy watching them play. I get excited and love to see how they "think" together. My game play is more of those hidden-object games, board games online (Monopoly, Life), or puzzle ones but I get frustrated with the puzzle ones because I lose track or get overwhelmed.

I agree with that. Shooting games are overrated. And because they're first person they give me motion sickness.

Every time Geo's little brother comes over they watch a movie and play video games. I watched the movie with them (The Fifth Element), so I did get some time with him. He's 14 and awkward. I only play 1 video game... it's called Portal. It's a puzzle game. I don't like games where you sit and shoot things.. I want to think with my games.

LARISSA238 it's so good that you give Geo and his brother space like that. That bonding time is important but remember his brother would probably also like to bond with you for a little bit as well. So, be sure to pop and spend a little time with them as well.

Geo has his little brother here. He came over and spent the night. I want Geo to be a good role model for him, so I leave them alone when they are over. When his brother wakes up I'm going to go and volunteer. Folding letters, yay LOL, But hey, whatever I can do to help.

Edited for a Freudian slip- I originally typed bother instead of brother.

We've got 2 ALDIs semilocally. I'll shop there, but it's not my favorite place, though I feel it's a little inconvenient as neither are on my regular route, and I have a tendency to forget about them. My grandfather is addicted to their instant coffee, but our locations stopped carrying it for some reason. I'll give it this much though, they pay well. They're hiring right now at $11.25/hour to start.

I have an ALDI right by me but I don't like it. It sounds ridiculous but as soon as I walk in I am hit with this onslaught of bad produce smell. A lot of people like them around me though.

I called them and they said they had 18 of them in stock. so I went, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. My knees cooperated and I used the rolling cart to take my groceries home. They don't do rainchecks...if they don't have it, you have to wait for the next time they have it. it sucks, since we have gotten such good stuff from there that may never come back. But the prices are awesome, so I keep going there. I can get a box of oatmeal for LESS than Publix when Publix has their buy one get one free. It's all generic. The store is called Aldi and it's slowly moving through the country.

We started our homeschool routine and work routine for myself. I feel "on" but it feels good. I needed this. Didn't sleep the greatest but at least I did sleep some. Later on today I'll go walk to the post office. The one good thing about being put on driving restriction is that it opened me up to looking forward to walking to places. It has more purpose to it than walking in circles so it excites me more. Larissa238 you helped see that side of things!

I'm back at seeing I messed up again this past pay period in regards to manic spending. Luckily I was able to save us by pulling from another bank account but upset with myself for being here again. It's such a stressor!

I'm feeling good.. I'm glad Geo is home. I'm a bit annoyed that he wants me to go to the store on my own, which I have no problem with normally, but my knees have been bothering me. We want to get a rolling grocery cart and they have one on sale. Just have to get there soon since if they sell out, it's gone. That's why he wants me to go today. I think if I tell him about my knees he might let me go later or tomorrow. I'm going to ice one knee (swollen) and some Biofreeze for the left knee with a tendon that hurts. I still have plenty of time to go today, so let's just see if I can go!

Thanks LARISSA238!

I just started the higher dose of Lithium (900 total) a week and a half ago, so needing the beztroipine to keep it down started last week.LARISSA238, so I am hoping that my system regulates and doesn't cause more problems. I have had the tremors before on a lower Lithium dose, but I still don't know about the mental futzing.

Till it regulates I will just have to let it be.

HMA- Benstropene is used to calm down twitches, so it's probably the lithium. Have you had a lithium levels checked? Akathesia is the name for twitches with meds, so ask your psych about it. *hugs* Remember- I am not a doctor and this is just my experiences.

I'm doing good today... I feel a bit off but not bad. I tried Melatonin and it's helping me sleep better. I wake up and I feel ready to take on the day. I still take my Klonopin and Trazadone, just adding in the Melatontin. When I see my psych on Wednesday I think I'm going to go through my meds and change my sleep meds since Klonopin and 300 mg Trazadone don't help.

Anyone familiar with lithum or benztropine? I have been taking both and we upped the dose on the lithium. I was having some major tics and twitches so the doc started me on benztropene try and fix the twitches. It has been almost a week and the twitches are somewhat better but am not sure which med is to blame

Along with the twitches I have reduced word recall. It takes me longer to talk and when I do manage to talk I feel like I am having alphabet soup words. I am guessing that the lithium is the problem. but the mad case of twitches and speaking makes it hard to write and speak--some things that I need for my job.

Basic question: does lithium or benztropine cause twitches or speech abnormalities?

Geo is home! he had a good trip, but is in a lot of pain from being stuck in Coach, but for one of his connecting flights he was in First Class. He said he never wanted to ride in Coach again LOL. I did very well with him gone- I didn't have a single drink, I was so tempted to smoke a cigarette and just kept myself busy. I did all the errands on the bus since the car is broken and I don't even have a driver's license. I lost a ton of weight (almost 6 pounds in 10 days) and I'm learning more about myself. I think this trip was a good idea. I feel a lot better and calmer.

I just got off the phone with the pharmacist... he said it's probably not the antibiotic causing the akathesia, but to go back on Congentin since about a month ago I went from 600 mg Neurontin to 900 mg, and I'm on Haldol. Just a bunch of meds (I take more than just that, of course lol) and so hopefully I can get some sleep. I had to be up at 7 am today to get a dental cleaning, and I went to bed at 8 pm to get a good night's sleep. NOPE! I didn't fall asleep until after midnight. I was exhausted and managed to get a nice 3 hour nap when I got home. My phone died while I was napping (charged it all night last night... still dead 5 hours later) and I missed a text from Geo. When I woke up, I called him and we talked for a bit. I miss him so much... I can't wait until early Friday morning (1:30 am) when he gets home. I'm sure that will help me sleep as well.

*HUGS* to all my girls! We can make it through this!

I'm starting to get a little anxious about Xena's first dance recital next week. It's not so much her actually dancing, but because it's in an amusement park. I'm just not sure exactly how to go about getting her dressed/hair/makeup after she's been running around all day. And silly me volunteered to be dance mom. Which now means that I get to stand back stage and keep control of a bunch of toddlers. Xena (5) is the oldest. The rest of them are 3.

Today I'm tired. I haven't had a full nights sleep since 7/16. 5 hours is just not cutting it for me. What's worse is besides the kids waking me up early, I've been having racing thoughts and just can't fall asleep at night.

Well, I carefully laid out plans for today and was very purposeful yesterday evening about getting a nice bedtime routine going. I set everything up for success. Of course, that should be a clue into hypo coming for me. I did manage to get to sleep but was awake 5.5 hours later. Guess that's better than 3 hours later like yesterday. I've already changed that well laid out schedule. A little nervous about hubby going back to work. I always seem to feel better mood wise when he is around. Friday and Saturday morning I was battling depression but started to feel better in the afternoon. Yesterday in the afternoon started to develop hypo.

I see the psychiatrist this afternoon. We need to change the Risperidone medication because we have been playing with doses to get the side effects down but it's just not working on the side effects or keeping the mania down. So, I imagine today it will be another back to the drawing board session. Oh well.

I hope everyone's week starts out right for them :-)

I only went to one real SCA event and I loved it. I would do the rapier practice (fencing) every Tuesday night, but I never got the paper to fight in events (I hit too hard). It was fun watching the guys in armor dressed up and going after each other with their wooden swords.

Geo is coming back Thursday... I haven't gotten as much done as I wanted to. I wanted to go to my in-laws to play with my little SIL but they never called me back. I guess it's all well, since I have to wake up early to go to the dentist tomorrow. I have a filing that fell out last month and it needs to be fixed. It doesn't hurt, or else I would have been more on top of it to get it fixed. I did manage to clean a bunch and that's good. I have to take out the trash, but I haven't left my apartment all day and I don't feel like doing it now.

Just got back from a wonderful trip with friends. We are into the Society for Creative Anachronism, where you get to go back in time and take on a persona with all the clothes and adornments--while still having luxuries like the use of bathroom and other things. Other people prefer to get armored up and poked/beaten on by other players--it is always a great to see! I tend to go to the arts and sciences classes. I used to be one of those silly people who armored up in the middle of the day heat. Nope. Not for the last ten years.

It was a great trip, other than finding out why we are not supposed to drink while on some of these meds. It takes a longer time to get into my system, so I was still pretty fuzzy in the morning. Oh well, I know that for next time.

Welcome to the team, Tema! Great to have you joining us!

Cherie - Yes, the racing thoughts thing is a definite issue. I jump so fast sometimes it's unbelievable. And have weird associations. For example, last night talking about lemonade made me remember to tell my parents that they were going to admit my father-in-law to the hospital to observe the effects of trying some different medications for his heart problem.

As for weekend plans - Today, going baby shower shopping with my mom. Tomorrow going to a church picnic at Knobles' Grove

Tomorrow (Saturday) I will be helping out with a health fair at the clinic I volunteer at. Sunday I am going over to my in-laws to play with my little SIL (she's 6) and watch a movie. I'm doing pretty good even though Geo is out of town. Just staying busy. This morning was my morning to rest and I slept all day. I did go to volunteer in the afternoon, just getting a few things ready for the health fair. I'm looking forward to it... it's normally a bunch of fun, even though you are working. I just hope I have an inside job and not outside serving food. It is HOT over here (it's 6:30 PM and the heat index is over 100, during the day it's around 110) and I sweat TONS. Just walking to the clinic I get drenched in sweat, and it's only a couple blocks away. As long as I'm inside and sitting I'm fine.

Welcome Team! I'm decently stable and suffer more from depression than mania but I do get those hypomanias too. I'm glad you said hi and I'm looking forward to getting to know you better!

Oh yes Cherie, many would sympathize with you here! I definitely go a mile-a-minute inside my mind and through my conversations. It is very fast paced and it's hard to keep track of myself... I can't imagine how it is for those around us. I am getting better at becoming aware of it (noticed it last night and verbalized it). The awareness doesn't make it go away but it helps provide me with some ease that I know what's going on. Plus it's a barometer to let me know I'm getting hypo and to implement those coping mechanisms (getting quiet, etc.). Many hugs to you!

When I'm hypomanic my thoughts are all over the place more than usual. I have the same problem with my hubby. I will be talking about one thing and then the next second change subjects what seems to be randomly (but makes sense in my mind). I think it's just part of the disorder. *hugs*

NANCYRUBIO2, that is SO good. I've gotten back into my writing (journal and fiction) which is helping me tremendously. I've created my own writing space that inspires me to do it as well.

I also just signed up to learn Tagalog (Filipino language) with my daughter through the website L-Lingo. I've very excited.

I'm like you. I have to keep my brain active :-)

Audrey, so glad you have your meds straightened out now. Itís funny how our medications can be such a lifesaver for us and pain in the butt as well! Sounds like your first step into the school world will be this month. Iím sure it will be bitter-sweet being she is your oldest.

HMATTAX, congratulation on getting back to the working world. Iím sure your excited about this since itís been quite a journey. What an accomplishment! I hope the camping trip works out for you. I personally hate camping. I prefer cabins for sure

NANCYRUBIO2, there isnít something you plan differently based upon the seasons? Any new thing you are learning? Any new change in your routine?

LARISSA238, I hope you are able to remain strong in your relationship with Geo and hold onto what a good man he seems to be. Is there any reason why you think you should leave him during his absence? Do you know if it is rooted to some personal trauma of yours? I do seem to think I need to separate or divorce my husband when I am at a heightened mania. I donít know why. He is a very good hubby, best friend, and good father. He puts up with my mood swings and loves me despite them. He understands and wants only the best for me and our family. So, it is confusing in regards to why I do this. I figured out it was because of my own insecurity that comes to the surface at these times. Something for me to work on.

Me, I am just looking forward to a new month. I am hoping to reach a stable period of 3-days at least. This manic is driving me nuts and then going down. Itís such a roller coaster. Right now I am having side effects from my meds that are disconcerting to me. I am bruising on my feet after exercise that has only started since my upped dose of Risperidone. My back constantly hurts and I have a constant runny nose. I know it is side effect related. I have a feeling that we are going to try and raise my dose again next week. Oh well. We start homeschooling with an online public school next week. I am looking forward to finally figuring out a schedule and looking forward to being with my daughter. We've both signed up with L-Lingo to learn Tagalog... my daughter chose it and it's one I've been wanting to learn since I am have Filipino.

SCA events are always fun. When I was in LA I would go to some of them with my brother, but since I moved here to Miami there wasn't anything close. I also lost my precious Renaissance dress when I moved, so I didn't have anything to wear either. I know it's not that important, but it kinda demoralized me.

The only thing going on for me in August is Geo going to Oregon tomorrow. He doesn't get back until the 13th and that's a long way away for me. I'm going to focus on going to the gym, volunteering, and spending time with my in laws. My little sister in law, Grace, is 6 and I love playing with her. Hopefully spending time with his family is going to be good for me. I just need to keep myself busy.

Last time Geo was gone (for 3 days) I got brainwashed into leaving him. I was in a cult, and summer is the time when I'm most vulnerable, and my "friend" Liz convinced me he was physically abusive (which he has never been) and that I needed to leave him. We packed up my stuff and I took it all (including my cat) to her house. I went to therapy on the day Geo returned and on the way home took the paper to break our lease. I got home and Geo told me to just talk to him and that we could work it out. We talked, and I showed him the list Liz made of reasons for me to leave him. When he got to the one that said physical abuse he started crying. He has always respected me and he has this fear of physically hurting me. If he accidentally hurts me, he starts crying. When I told Liz that I was getting back with him, she was pissed and refused to go anywhere near him. So getting my stuff back was a challenge, but eventually I got my stuff and I'm not going to do that again. But I tend to get in trouble when he is not around so I'm going to try and keep myself as busy as possible to get through the time.

August should be a good month for me.

I am starting out by going out to a camping event with friends next weekend (Society for Creative Anachronism event).

My new contract with a new employer should be going through in the next couple of weeks so I can get back to working for the first time in three years. It has been a long road to get to here--I haven't worked since my husband died in 2013 and I have been trying to get this contract for over a year.

After that, well, continuing to watch my portions and keeping the weight going down!

The end of summer is coming near. The kids will be heading back to school. (Ugh. I can't be the only person that HATES school bus traffic.)

How will your August be shaping up?

Most noteable for us, Xena has her first dance recital on the 17th. She starts back for a 2 week kindergarten readiness course on the 15th, and I'll have to pull her out for the recital. Kindergarten orientation is the 25th, and she has her first day of actual kindergarten on the 29th.

No word yet on if/when Isis starts pre-K.

In other news, got my meds straightened out with the help of my pharmacist.
