To all moms! have a wonderful day! I'm gonna have a good day in spite of not seeing the kids, they live in other states.
I slept for 6 hrs straight, was up with hunny, he had to go and deliver more flowers, then I went back to bed with advils, muscle relaxer, and gabapentin, I finished sleeping....felt good.
My attitude and mood is good.
Hunny got home from work real late last nite, but I was ok. We ate, ( too late) an had a glass of wine. smoked a little..Nice
Have a good day! Cherie

I was on a medication, with a side affect of weight gain. Doc said I can stop taking it. I,ve cleaned up my eating, am walking, I did this before, I can do this again!

Most of the PM meds (Tylenol PM for example) are just the regular drug plus Benadryl. Geodon helped me sleep through the night if I took it at bedtime. It takes about 4 hours to kick in so when you are already asleep it starts to work to help keep you asleep. It is a antipsychotic, a very heavy med so I wouldn't take it just for sleep. But maybe you can trade your gabapentamin for Geodon. Talk to your doctor about it... I'm no professional.

Hi all!
Hunny and I smoked last nite. We both have back issues. My back has been killin the last few days, Been taking gabapentin , advils and muscle relaxers. Had to cut them in half for daytime. But I'm still up at nit between 230 and 330. Then I took a klonipin, and another muscle relaxer. finally slept. Psych is giving me the gabapentin to get me off klonipin for good, but it dowsn't work the same...
Hunny was in a accident last last, not hurt, had been working 12 hrs, he delivers flowers, so I got up with him this morning to see if he was alrite. he was. but I needed more sleep. so I took gabapentin and muscle relaxer, I slept. The problem at nit is that I don't sleep the whole nite. Thinking about buying Advil PM. Anyone?

Things are beginning to improve for medical marijuana especially in our country. Even some in the Federal Government are beginning to come around to the decriminalization of marijuana. It is such a great medicine that things should change.

Medical marijuana is on the ballot here and I hope it passes. I know I could use the help with sleep, migraines, bipolar, PTSD, etc. My mom smokes it for her Parkinson's. It's illegal, but it helps her a lot. When I was up there she wanted to know if I wanted to try some, and I said no. I'm not going to do it if it's illegal. My work is STRICT when it comes to drugs. You can't even smoke cigarettes. They do a nicotine test before you can work. Imagine if I come up with illegal pot in my blood? Fired on the spot. I like my job (well, volunteering, but it's the closest I can come to a real job) and want to keep it.

I live in Oregon and have a medical marijuana card here. In this state it is legal for both recreational and medical. I use it for my debilitating migraines and for my anxiety. It works great. I think that is why my Gabapentin doesn't need to be full strength. That is a private thought just being thrown out as an observation I've made - no health care provider, not my doctor - just me. I am not making any recommendations here, but it works for me, I don't always have the money to get my medication, so I rely on the Gabapentin for those times. It is working so far and I am staying stable. My psychiatrist is quite aware of my medicinal use of the drug. He is completely for it. If it works, then use it. It also helps me to sleep better than any of the pills they are giving me. I can sleep a whole 7 or 8 hours to my normal 4 hours if I smoke before bed. So Edwardsc, don't feel as if you are alone in your medicinal use of medical marijuana. Deb

Pa just passed the medical marijuana bill, but it only applies to pill form. While I was on the waiting list for my current psychiatrist and was having severe anxiety attacks, my husband brought some pot home from a guy he works with for me. Definitely worked it's magic. My Klonopin fires the job, but can't say I wouldn't appreciate something more natural.

I live in CA. The state is going to go recreational soon, it's on the ballot. I'll be happy when it passes, I always felt good smoking a little pot. That website is a little difficult to find because when you google it you get info about iodine. If you ask for Iodine the drug info site it usually comes up.

Karen, I'm gonna check out the site. I take thyroid med, my blood pressure is low. Actually, I take less then I have in the past. The last Psych I had, really had me in a fog, and I didn,t know it.
I do smoke some medical weed with my husband at nite, it helps with the back pain. I'm not drinking either. I will have some wine for Mothers day weekend.
I love this site, we can be open here.... Cherie

Have any of you been on a web site called "Iodine"? It is a wonderful site that give info about all drugs, there uses, side effects etc. It also has personal comments and ages of people that have been taking the drugs. My daughter is a Dr. of Pharmacy and worked part time for this site when it first come on about 3-4 years ago. Check it out.

Hi everyone,

I have just recently been put on Gabapentin because of my severe anxiety and panic attacks and also to help me sleep at night, not so much because of bipolar. They also use it for diabetic neuropathy pain relief. I don't know much about the drug, but I am going to find out right after I post this. I know that I am on 1800 milligrams of Gabapentin, but I only take 1200 of it since it helps to dehydrate me during the day. Trazodone is also a new drug for me. I only take one pill a night, because when they had me on two pills a night they interfered with my blood pressure meds and my bipolar meds and really, really helped to dehydrate me as well. I think that the real culprit was the hydroxyzine they had me on and I asked to come off. The combination of the Trazodone and the hydroxyzine was what interfered with my other meds. I don't know much about any of the other drugs anyone has mentioned. I know what Haldol is, because a friend of mine was prescribed those for hallucinations. It worked well for her. Most of the other drugs I take I have taken for better than ten years, with the addition of Abilify when it came out. I don't know much about Lithium, but from what I do hear about it is always about possible kidney damage. I know that you have to monitor blood levels with it all the time. I am one of those who is over 60 and one of the generations that you are talking about. I was miserable until they came up with drugs to help me control my bipolar 1 symptoms. It took me until I was in my 40's to get hooked up with actual bipolar drugs that even began to work. They just didn't have specific drugs for bipolar when I was in my 20's except Lithium and I refused to take that. The mental health system was horrible back in the day. You were lucky to get a correct diagnosis, which is why it took me so long to find the meds that worked. So, not having meds was a nightmare, not a blessing. Working through my bipolar problems has been my number one priority for most of my life. At least now I have a cocktail that works, but I wish that they would leave my anxiety and sleep medications alone. Nothing they try works on me. I still only sleep about four hours a night most nights. I am still not completely sold on Trazadone or Gabapentin. I know that they are moving away from benzo's but my Oxazapam worked better than either one of those. I would be frustrated with my medication regimen if I were KKKaren too. It sounds as though the meds cause you more problems than being off of them. At any rate, I hope that we all can solve our medication woes and get a cocktail that will work for all of our symptoms. Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

I find it so frustrating that most doctors treat the symptoms and not the underlying reason they have that symptom. I take Lithium for Bipolar, only 300 mg, because this drug caused my thyroid and kidneys to malfunction. So now I have to take Levothyroxine to treat my bad thyroid. Because of my bad thyroid I have gained weight which caused my blood pressure to go up, thyroid problems also caused my Cholesterol and Triglycerides to go out of whack. So now I take Metroprolol and Simvastatin to control those problems. I don't sleep well so I take Trazodone for that. Then due to pain in my back I take Gabapentin, which I now find out is also used to treat Bipolar, I did not know this. So am I taking two drugs for Bipolar now and is that really necessary. I say again, I have not had a manic episode in 10 years, I do not have depression at all or ever (maybe when my best friend died of cancer). I am ready to go off all medications and start a fresh. It just feels to me that between the Doctors and big pharma companies everyone is doing their absolute best to keep us in drugs. Maybe the previous generations that lived into their 60's or early 70's without the use of drugs had it better then we do. Is it really necessary to live to be 100 and feel awful all the time? Get the junk food out of our groceries and start cracking down on fake food and maybe we could live without the pills. Hey, it's just my opinion, thanks for listening.

KKKaren, sorry to hear all you are going thru. In the morning , I take wellbutrin and my hormone, also before I eat prevacid and thyroid. My psych just changed me to 3 600mg of gabapenten a day, I,m going to cut them in half, I wouldn,t get anything done, I'll take more if I need too. She also had me stop the Lithium, I gained a lot of weight, was really upset about that. Was drinking a lot of wine during the day, I stopped that. Still have the back pain, going for a shot 5-19.
At nite I take 50mg of topomax, ambien .05mg. lamictal 350mg, gabapenten 900mg, advils and Multi-minerals for shaky legs. She took me off almost all benzos.
I had the weepies last week, was and felt overwhelmed. Much better now.
Families don,t really understand. I don't talk with them about it.
Hunny has been great!

I don't know what my new psych is going to be like... I want to get off as many meds as I need to. My main ones are Prozac, Haldol, and Klonopin. I take Cogentin to stop the shakes from the Haldol. I'm starting to hallucinate again a bit, so I don't know what the doctor is going to do. I don't want to move away from Haldol since it's the only med that has stopped all the hallucinations. I need to do some research so I'm prepared for my appointment on Friday. I'm seeing a psych at the clinic I work at... I didn't like the old doctors there, but they have gotten some new ones that I'm going to try.

I was surprised to see you list Gabapentin as one of your main Bipolar meds. I was just prescribed this for sciatic nerve pain associated with back issues, in my research of this drug I saw no mention of it as a treatment for bipolar. I too take Trazadone as a sleep aid but have cut my dose in half due to the side effect of Gabapentin as also being considered a pill that causes sleepiness. The first time I took G. and T. together I ended up sleeping so hard I wet the bed! That was no fun. I was on Abilify for a short time as a replacement for Risperdol which ended up giving me seizures. I never felt I needed either one of those and ended up insisting they agree to take me off. I find it strange that when a new drug like Risperdol or Abilify come out after years of drug trials they find out after they are in the main stream that there are additional problems. I believe less (drugs) is more, unfortunately my family believes the opposite.

Hi everybody,

Esmeralda what is it that you have read about Abilify? I have been on it for years and nothing helped me come out of my depression like Abilify. I was on Depakote too, but I took myself off of that. It made me shake too much and I had other side effects that I didn't like. I was already on Abilify and that is a mood enhancer too. So, now I take Wellbutrin, Abilify and Gabapentin as my main bipolar meds. I also take Trazadone to help me sleep at night. I'm on Amantadine for leg cramps and some mirtazapine at night for sleep too. I would be interested in hearing what you've heard about Abilify, since I have relied on it for so long.

I hope that everyone is having a great week and that it is a productive one as well. I am off to the gym soon. I have about an hour to put on the treadmill. Sending positive energy and hugs to all that need them. Take care and God bless, Deb

I just read in one of my medical journals that there may be some issues with Abilify so that is good to come off anyway...
I hope your doctor takes a serious look at all your meds...I used to work on an acute medical/ surgical unit and I don't ever remember the serious I'll BO patients taking that kind of mixture of drugs...
Lithium can be a wonder drug or extremely dangerous. Personally I think it's a drug of last resort. Stay healthy and see your Pdoc regularly... I am thankful for mine...

I was on Lithium for a while until I started having kidney problems. I was drinking over a gallon and a half a day and peeing it all out. I tapered off slowly (I was on 1,500 mg a day) and my kidneys have thankfully recovered. I'm taking myself off of some of my meds, some because I don't need them, or can't get them from the pharmacy. It's just a pain. I don't feel too bad right now, so I guess I don't need them. I was on Haldol, Abilify, Prozac, Congentin, Neurontin and Klonopin. I'm not taking the Abilify now because it gave me a rash so I'm allergic to it. I want to get off Neurontin soon... I have a meeting with my new psychiatrist on Friday so I will have to see how it goes.

Hi EdwardSC I've been coming down off the Lithium myself. I haven't been on this thread regularly for awhile so I don't know your back story. Would love to hear why you are coming off the meds. I have been coming off due to thyroid and kidney issues and am down to 300 mg a day. My doctor would like me to get off completely but I have resisted due to family pressures. I feel great but also suffered a little bit of the weepies in the beginning. My biggest problem is my family, they do not believe that I am doing this by my doctors orders, they think I am doing it on my own. My 40 year old daughter has denied me access to my Grandchildren unless I go back on the meds, even though I am currently on a therapeutic dose.. While I am very sorry about her fears, they are hers to have and I refuse to make them my own. I have not had an manic or depressive issue for over 10 years but am now struggling to cope due her insistence that I go back up to high doses. I am also getting tired of being called a lair. I have agreed to let her meet with my doctor to discuss this issue after I have completed the many and frequent tests that are being done on my thyroid and kidneys. These physical issues are my priority right now, my moods feel very stable. So please let me know your story so I don't feel quite so alone.

Karen

So glad for this chat thread. Been having memories and some flashbacks of hospitalizations and the strange things I have encountered in those psychiatric hospitals. Not fun to go through again and again! I need to get back to doing EMDR with my therapist.

Hi, I decided to weigh my self on Fri morn. Before the weekend.
Today is the first day I haven't had the weepies from coming off the Lithium. I'm eating cleaner, and exercising now, along with being off the med, I should start to see some results soon. I am back down from 202 pounds to 198, course some is water weight...
I'm in Cincinati,OH, our weather has been up and down..... Hope you all are doing good!

I was on a medication, with a side affect of weight gain. Doc said I can stop taking it. I,ve cleaned up my eating, am walking, I did this before, I can do this again!
Spark will help!

I managed not to gain much weight when I was at my mom's and today I am down another pound to 235.2 pounds. At my mom's I weighed in at 236.4 so I will take any loss. I haven't been eating well, so I'm just glad I lost.

We are getting close to the 90's already.. it's supposed to get to 88 degrees by Wednesday and I'm going to start using a pedal bike than walk in the heat. It doesn't get more than 75 at night, so even a night walk would be icky. I also need to get back to the gym. I'm hoping to go tomorrow. We shall see!

Larissa, it sounds as if you have some major plans coming up in the near future. I know of many men who only have a high school education and were smart enough to have their Bachelor's, as well. He will get his GED in his own time. He has to be ready for it. The math would scare me too. I don't know if I were to take a high school math test today if I would be able to pass it myself and I graduated. You have a lot of options for your future. It would be nice if you and Geo could work together. Getting ready for hurricane season early is a wise decision. I used to worry constantly about hurricane's when I lived in Louisiana. I went through several. I always had extra food and water on hand during the season. You never know when you will need it.

Urbanaudreye, I'm sorry that your May had a wet start if you are not a "rainy day" person. We are having full sun and full blown temperatures in the high seventies and low eighties. I will spend some time outside, since the weather is so nice. It will change to rain again later this week, but today is wonderful!!!

I've not got a lot of plans for this month. My major focus will be on losing another ten pounds this month if I can. The kids get out of school this month and that leaves grandma home all day watching grandchildren for my kids while they work. It is going to be a long summer and I will have to make time to get to the gym on my daughter's daysoff. I wish you all well this month and I hope that you all make your goals. Sending positive energy and hugs to all that need them. Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

We are getting closer and closer to hurricane season... time to start stocking up on canned goods and water... Geo says that if a big enough hurricane would come where we would need that stuff that we would evacuate and not need them anyway. He has trouble thinking about the future.. He knows he needs to get his GED (he's not very good socially and had problems with bullies in high school) but he keeps putting it off. Don't get me wrong, he's smarter than I am, and I have my Bachelors. He understands things like quantum physics, but he's scared of all the math. He's in no rush... he's been on disability for over 10 years. I'm at my 5 year mark as well. I'm not sure if I know what I'm going to do with my life anymore... i want to go into psychology but I'm not sure if I can. I'm good at person-to-person sales and enjoy it. I was thinking of being the sales manager for Geo if he gets his photography business running. I'm not sure yet. I just know I have to take baby steps.
