Good morning! Yesterday everything was go go GO! From the moment I woke up it was errands and then our trip to the amusement park. Today I'm tired and sore... a little crabby because I haven't had my coffee yet. But otherwise, feeling pretty good.

My mom's surgery went well yesterday. They did a spinal block, so she's feeling no pain. I suppose we'll see how everything goes once that wears out. Tonight is the church dance. A couple hours kid free!

Task for the day... find a place for a rather large aquarium, because I'm adopting an iguana.

Yes, the psych said to stop takin the Lithium.... I've been on it a long time. Today is the second day off it. I hope it goes well for me. I'm short, and I weigh 200 pounds, some of it caused by my moods , wanting sweets for a while, back went out, not being able to exercise, and drinking wine everyday for a while. I was sneakin, so hubby wouldn't know, empty calories. I think that was a part of my mood too. I've broke that habit. He doesn,t know. He's gonna help me monitor my moods. But sometimes, we don,t tell people...
Thanks everyone, Take care, Cherie

I was on a medication, with a side affect of weight gain. Doc said I can stop taking it. I,ve cleaned up my eating, am walking, I did this before, I can do this again!

Cherie,
Your doctor said cold turkey on the Lithium? That's a scary thought. I know that's definitely one known for causing weight gain. I hope all goes well for you coming off it.

Me again, I just looked up Lithium, wow the side affects...weight gain being one of them. No wonder I could,t lose weight. Thank God! it wasn,t all in my head, My husband is gonna help me monitor my moods, since I'm off of it. The gabapentin should help if I get hyper....

I called my psych yesterday, she said to stop taking Lithium, is that more of a weight gainer? She said it is,more then lamictal. Now I have to monitor my mood.
I was afraid to go off klonipin, but we slowly did it. Now I just take it when I need too. When I go to the store, I take gabapentin, it calms me just enough.
I hope you all are doing good. One day at a time....

Cherie,
I did not notice a weight gain since going on Lamictal, but I have been on it about 1 year. You could google Lamictal and get the specifics about the side affects. Some meds cause weight gain in some people and weight loss in others. Everyone is so unique. Or you could ask your pharmacist. I noticed on my last prescription that I am suppose to take it on an empty stomach. I need to call the pharmacist about that as I was never told that by the doctor or other pharmacy I used last year.

Did Gabapentin increase your appetite at all? Have you noticed a difference since going on it in your appetite?? I would love to be off of a narcotic (Klonopin) but can't handle anxiety. I have fears and anxiety about many different things. I am in fight or flight stance if I do not take it. It is scary!!

Glad you can vent!!

My niece had a pre-trial conference for her custody and divorce trial today without a lawyer. She was very stressed and upset. It took less than 30 minutes and she now knows that it was no be deal. Now the fight starts as far as getting a lawyer, he has one, she does not. And trying to keep primary custody of her two boys. She is relieved. She has a dual diagnosis and her soon to be ex husband is trying to use that against her. She takes Suboxone for her addiction and lexapro for her mental illness...bipolar, depression, anxiety and anorexia.

Sorry I threw all the in my post. I was worried sick about her. Actually only slept 5 hours last night. I don't have children and I am very close to this niece and my great nephews. Had to get that off my chest. I feel so much better now!!!

Thanks for reading!! Angie

I've been put on gabapentin, because I'm off klonipin for the most part. Had the weepies the last 2 days, Feel better, not drinking or sneakin.
Does Lamicictal make you gain weight??? I've put on pounds, but because of my fluctuations in Hills and valleys. I hate the way I look now. I can't even paint my toes! Oh Lordy!
Thanks for letting me vent! Cherie

Geo and I took the Amtrak from Miami to Palatka (near Jacksonville) so it was just one state but it's a long ride. I am going to miss my mom. Geo came with me, but I have been doing all the work. Cleaning the kitchen, folding clothes, cooking dinner, making sure there is hot coffee and setting up the coffee for the next day. I'm exhausted. We are sleeping on a box spring and mattress on the floor since Geo broke the bed. I'm just so tired and can't wait to get home.

Yes, Larissa, have a safe ride home.

Personally I think train rides are overrated, but I've been on more than my fair share over the years. I'll take flying these days. Much quicker. You don't necessarily have to make nice with the people around you because you won't have much longer than a few hours to spend with them. I traveled coast to coast on Amtrak when I was 10. Almost a month on a train back and forth, minus the week or so that we were actually staying somewhere in between. Then there's also been Louisiana, Florida, and Iowa. Probably others I can't quite remember right now. It was pretty much every other year going with my grandfather to Navy reunions. It's nice to travel, but after the initial novelty of a train wears off it becomes a bit of a pain.

Our weather has taken a turn towards the warmer the past few days which makes me a happier camper. Of course now the kids are constantly pestering me to go outside or to go to the park. It's fine when they'll listen, but it's a nightmare getting them back inside, and they always find some sort of "trouble" to get into. And then they get so filthy that baths are completely unavoidable at least once a day, sometimes more. I can't exactly let them eat when they're so encrusted with dirt that even scrubbing their hands and face doesn't get it off.

Some stuff going on this week... Rob is taking Friday off and we're going to opening day at Dorney Park. They're only open 5p to 9p, but it's something to look forward to. Also, Friday morning, my mom is going for surgery on her wrist. I feel guilty going to the park when she's going to be in recovery, but my parents basically said "what are you going to do?". Not like I'm the one performing the surgery. Then Saturday night we're going to a church dance. I've learned after the last one that I could dress a little more casually.

Larissa,
I can image you are tired of being at other places instead of home!!

I wouldn't want my ex-spouse's brother to live with us, but he was older and it wouldn't have worked well.

My nephew lived with us when he was 18 for 6 months while in high school. Rick didn't like it, but he was homeless and it was winter in Montana. I put my foot down!! Needless to say he did pay his way. He would have been living in his car had it not been for us. I was happy to have him with us!!

Have an awesome rest of your vacation at your Mom's!!

I'm at my mom's now. I leave on the 27th and then I go home to rest. I've done so much travelling and I just want to get back to my normal life. There is talk of Geo's 13 year old brother moving in with us for the summer. Nothing is official yet, but I don't know if I could stand it. His little brother and I don't get along.

Hi Everyone! I've been MIA for a while and I really want to get back in to being active on here because I've managed to gain 20 pounds! I stopped taking my Lamictal/Lamotrigene because it was giving me acne and I am not sure if I want to try to find something to replace it - I'm still on abilify daily and use melatonin for sleep. I'm not sure if stopping the Lamictal has anything to do with why I gained so much back but, either way, it has happened and I need to take control. If I keep gaining 10 pounds a month I'll be huge by the end of the year!

Married, mom of 2 young boys, chronic illness warrior, and trying my best! I'm happy to make new friends!

I was put on gabapentin for sleep and pain, but it just left me groggy and it was hard to get through my day. I use Valerian root and klonopin for sleep.

EDWARDSC,
I have been on just an antidepressant before, but that triggers mania. Now I take a mix or cocktail of medications. They are working really well. I am going to ask about gabapentin at my appt in May as I don't like to be dependent on Klonopin. Might be okay to change at that time. Will have to see. Have a great day.

I'm off all benzos now , except for 5mg of ambien at nite. I also take 900mg of gabapentin at night and 300 in morning or when I have anxiety, She did give me 15 pills of 5mg of klonipin if I need it( crying jags). I'm on Wellbutrin, Lithium, and gabapentin in the morning. At nite I take Lithium, lamictal which is slowly being increased,Gabapentin, 50mg topamax, and ambien. I was nervous about being taken off klonipin, I used to take a lot more.
Am cutting my drinking way down, going AF during the week, Mod on weekends. Hunny and I were talkind about my ups and downs. I've put on at least 20 pounds, More from steroids for my back Aghh.
I will be checkin in, Thanks everyone

Hi to all,
I take a low dose of klonopin 3 times a day. I dependent on it. But not addicted. There is a difference. I don't use more than I should, but really need it for anxiety.

Medicare has changed some rules on controlled substances. They are much stricker and doctor's have to jump through hoops to keep you on them. Not sure if it is just pain pills like oxycotin and Hydrocodone... But klonopin is a schedule 4 controlled substance.

I hesitate to ask my doctor about Gabapentin as I am stable and medication changes really throw me off. I might just to see what he says. May Google it ony own then bring it up.
Have a great day everyone!!

Cherie,

I take Gabapentin right now for anxiety. I don't know what Klonopin is for. I take 900 milligrams a day right now. I haven't noticed any really negative side effects yet. I've only been on it for a couple of months. If I take two of my pills at night they help me sleep. They took me off my oxazapam and put me on Gabapentin instead. From what I understand, they are phasing out benzo's at my mental health clinic and replacing them with newer, better drugs, which cause less havoc on the body. I was on oxazapam for years, but they said that they are not good for your body and have too many interaction possibilities and side effects. Let me know how Gabapentin works for you. I will be interested in your reply, after you have gotten used to the drug. The one thing that I have noticed is that I am more thirsty, but they have changed so many of my meds lately, that I can't say for sure it is a Gabapentin side effect. Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

My psych is cutting my topamax down, everything taste like crap. The good part about it, I don't perspire so bad. Gonna have to have another shot in my back in the middle of May, more steroids! I'm already heavy enuff! Still sipping on wine during the week, Not good. I get mellow, not drunk.
I'm off all benzos, does anyone take Gabapentin in place of Klonipin?
We just had a whole week of beautiful weather!

Today is a mind stuck on a hamster wheel kind of day. I want to shut it down, but it's in a fight or flight mode and doesn't want the wheel to stop spinning. I wish I had some energy to go with the restlessness, but no go on that. Gonna hope a Klonopin will do the trick to take me to dreamland tonight.

Hi everybody,

Urbanaudreye, I do hope that you can get the sleep you need. Sleep is so important. I know I have insomnia and nothing that they've given me had helped. My doctor prescribed a new medication, but it is appetite enhancing so I have to watch it.

Cherie, I hope that you are feeling better today and that your Topomax is not giving you food taste troubles. Steroids are famous for helping to add on the weight, I hope that you aren't going to have to be on them long. They are great for controlling inflammation.

Today is great! The sun is shinning and unlike yesterday's 86 degree heat, we will only hit 77 today. This is outdoor weather and I am spending as much time outside as I can. I've already hit the gym and gotten in my morning workout. Walking the neighborhood today is a great idea. My new sleep medication is working great! I actually slept last night for more than three hours. It is a relief to get an eight hour night. The rest of the day, I am running errands and meeting my friend, Christine, for some retail therapy. I hope that you all are in good space today and have sunshine in your hearts, if not outside. Sending positive energy and hugs to all that need them! Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

I bet with two kids it is hard to stay asleep. They want your attention so much. Wish you the best of luck getting more sleep!! I know it sure helps me when I get enough!! emoticon

EDARDSC3931,
The Topamax should help with the hunger. Never heard of the side affects you mentioned. Steroids with mess with your weight every time. Like you said, find the food you like and try to eat healthy. That will help with the weight gain. Although maybe not a lot. How long do you have to stay on them??

Good luck. Hope the back is better soon!

Hi all, I Take 100mg of Topomax at nite, its making everything taste funny. and flat. I'm putting weight on from meds, steroids for my back, trying to find foods that taste good, and wine, I sip the wine, it does keep me mellow, but hubby doesn't know.
I'm pretty stable, but it woundn't take much to make me cry. Had to vent.
Will ckeck in tomorrow, Thanks, Cherie

Hi everybody,

Larrissa, Banana bread sounds great. What a nice thing to do for a friend. I'm sure that she did appreciate your efforts. I have some really ripe bananas that I ought to use up and Banana bread sounds like a good way to do that. My grandson will love it. I hope that you can get into the doctor. Your symptoms sound very uncomfortable. I'm sure that they will find out the cause.

Urbanaudreye, that was terrific news from your cardiologist. Having nothing wrong with your heart is a great diagnosis. Being stressed and not sleeping well is not good. Have you talked with your GP about a sleeping aide, perhaps?

Angien9, a big hello to you.

Today is going to be hot, hot. It will be 84 degrees today and I am stoked for the better weather and the sunshine. I've already hit the gym. My daughter took my grandson to school, so I was able to get to the gym early and work out. It feels good to have my formal exercise out of the way for the day. I hope that you all have sunshine in your hearts and that your week is starting out well. Sending positive energy and hugs to all that need them. Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

Larissa,
Glad to hear u like to bake. I enjoy it, too. Sorry to hear about your coughing and getting sick from it. I hope you can get into the doctor before the 21st. Where does your Mom live? Hope you are feeling well enough to travel by then.

Feel better!!

I love to make banana bread and I got some bananas from a coworker, and managed to bake her a loaf before she left. She was so happy... I brought them in a paper bag and she at first thought that I was giving her the bananas back lol. It made me feel really good that I could do that for her. I'm doing okay but I hope I can see a doctor before I go see my mom on the 21st. I have this problem that I get a coughing spell and my body tries to throw up. There is something wrong with me and I don't know what it is.

Audrey,
Love the doctor's helpful suggestion!! If it were only that easy. Right!! Guess it must not be a woman with children. They might understand...or am I wrong? Glad your leg is feeling a little better. Change in colors is usually a good thing. Kids calling it a rainbow could be funny or a little annoying. Guess it depends on your mood!!

Larissa,
Glad you made it home. Sorry you lost your earring. Sounds like a tough airport stop!! I don't fly much anymore. I did have a belt buckle on one time and I beeped. I was young and it was before 9/11, so they didn't make me take it off. I did show them when we went back through. (We were picking up my sister at the airport.) I enjoyed Skyping with you. We should do it again sometime. Just text me and we will!!

Hope everyone had a good Friday.

Yikes, Larissa! That's definitely rough. What reason did they give you for your "problem areas". Did something set the metal detectors off or something? I'd have been livid. I almost got arrested by homeland security a couple years ago in NYC because I refused to remove my belt to go through security, but they were literally holding my pants up at the time. I requested a female security officer and they refused me that right. You want to find a real easy way to get me leaning towards an aggressive side, that's the way to do it.

My leg is getting slightly better. Still sore, but it's easier to walk now. The kids have taken to calling it my rainbow leg now thanks to the bruising,

I saw my cardiologist yesterday and was able to talk about the results from my monitor. Good news is my heart looks fine, and they're not concerned. They feel like my problem is extreme anxiety and sleep deprivation. They're suggestion... stress less and sleep more, lol.

HI all,

Larissa, welcome home!! I am so sorry that your trip home was fraught with so many obstacles. What airline did you fly? I hope that they gave you a certificate for money off the next time you fly or some sort of perk for losing your luggage. I used to help my husband deliver delayed and lost luggage for several airlines in Portland, Or. They used to supply the certificates to be delivered with the luggage if the client hadn't already been given it at the luggage counter. Both United and Delta used to do that.

Urbanaudreye, I hope that your leg feels much better now that its been a few days.

Friday is a day of rest for me. I put in four days of an hour each at the gym this week, It has left me satisfied with my program, but tired. I think that today will be a leisurely walk around the neighborhood with my grand son. The weather here is gray and overcast. It is supposed to be that way for the entire weekend with temperatures in the 60's. I miss the sun. Time to get in and use my therapy light for the day. Sending positive energy and hugs to all that need them. Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

*hugs Audrey* I'm glad you had a nice dinner. I hope your leg gets better soon!

Well, Tuesday was just one of those days. I was flying home from LA to Miami and I lost one of the beautiful earrings my hubby got me for my birthday. Then I go through security and there was 3 "problem" areas that they had to investigate. One of them being my groin area, so I got the full pat down by security in front of everyone. Then then I finally get to Miami to find out my luggage was in North Carolina. I got it the next day, but man... just a bad day.

Hi everyone,
Having a really busy day here. It's gray and overcast but no rain until tomorrow. I have been to the gym and to counseling today. They pretty much took up my morning. Then I got online and researched housing options given to me by my counselor and now it is almost time to pick up my grandson, Micah from school. This day has just flown by.

Urbanaudreye, Sorry to hear about your fall. I often have the same feeling about my grandson that you have about your kids. I sure hope that you are feeling better and that you heal quickly.

I'm having a love hate relationship with life right now. Saturday night was date night for me and the hubby. It was wonderful. We went to a newish French restaurant downtown. Pricey, but the food and service was phenomenal, so totally worth it. Then comes the hate part... when we were picking up the kids from my parents, Xena refused to walk to the car because she didn't want to put her shoes on her clean feet. Whilst carrying her, I fell down the steps. So I've been pretty sore since then.

Yesterday we drove to Allentown to pick up our season passes for Dorney Park. Should make for a fun summer. Then we went to the mall down there. It's so much nicer than ours. I got a new dress for summer and a new coffee mug, so that was nice. Of course the whole time I'm limping around. My ankles are really not being my friends right now.

This morning Xena fought going to school. She was only 2 minutes late, but it's so irritating when she throws a fit over silly things. Her sweatshirt that she wanted to wear was in the wash and she couldn't find the shoes she wanted to wear... too bad she can't put her things where they belong. I had to keep on her to get moving. Which again, meant I was hobbling around after her.

So yeah, bumps, and bruises and miserableness.

I'm sorry you are going through this. It's always a balance between mental health and physical health. I am always scared of the physical repercussions from the medications. Your physical health is so important. If your physical health is not good than eventually your mental health will follow. Maybe you can help her understand that you need to balance both? Maybe you could talk to her in regards to her fear and if she is something that is causing her to doubt your stability?

The weather here is in the 80's, but the temperature will go back to the 70's tomorrow. We will have a partly sunny weekend and rain again for most of next week with temperatures in the 60's. Urbanaudreye,

Sorry it was dreary the other day. Hard to be productive on those kind of days!! We finally don't have as much wind today. Yeah! And warmer temperature starting today through the weekend. We had beautiful weather in February...most warm sunny days up to the 70's. Now we are having spring, wet weather. We sure need it here in Montana. The wildfire season will be unbearable in the mountains, if we don't get more rain!!

Larissa,
Glad you got to celebrate you brothers birthday, even if it was with a lunch and not what you had planned. Hope to Skype with you soon!! Will have to text you before we do to make sure you are on or near your computer!!

Today was my brother's birthday... we had planned to go to the gun range and have my brother remind me how to break down the gun, clean it and basic safety today and Monday go to the range. Apparently everything got messy and we ended up having a birthday lunch. I still had fun. I'm having a great time but can't wait to get home to Geo and my kitty Angela.

Hi everybody,

I hope that everyone's weekend was great and that you enjoyed yourselves. I did manage to take the boys to the Zoo. Apparently, our Zoo does stay open year round. We have such mild temperatures here on the Valley floor, that we don't have to worry about closures unless it snows and then they will close it for weather. Today it is transitioning from rainy to sun. We should have showers this morning, with afternoon clearing. Then, the Spring weather changes back to sun and we are in good space again. Today is speech therapy day for my grandson, Micah, so I will have to pick him up early from school and take him to his appointment. He has a wonderful therapist. She is s joy to be around, loves her job and is good at it. I hope that you all have a wonderfully productive day. Happy Monday!!! Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

It was in the 70's today. I spent most of the day inside watching General Conference for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We had a session from 10 am to 12 pm and another from 2pm to 4pm. We have a general conference in April and October. We listen to talks from our leaders, both priesthood and sisters. It is very inspiring!

I had a great day watching and getting a few things done around the house. I even made protein bars. Am seeing my therapist in the morning and promised the girls in the office I would bring them some. Tastes like a good batch!!

Have a great day and a great week!

I didn't even think about that. I haven't checked to see if the Zoo is even open. I assumed that it was, because the Children's Museum just opened again for the year and that is almost on top of the Zoo. Maybe we will go to the Children's Museum instead. Thank you for pointing that out. I should call before we try to head out that far and see if they are open yet for the year. emoticon

I'll take that low over ours. Looking at going to be in the teens the next couple of days. And a wind advisory tomorrow.

This morning Xena figured out how to turn YouTube onto the TV. I'm currently stuck watching some sort of junk with people dressed like Disney and Marvel characters pulling pranks on each other. Complete with stupid music and no speaking. Someone save me!

Our weather here in the Pacific Northwest is great!! Today is supposed to be partly cloudy in preparation for the rain that is supposed to happen on Monday. We clear up after Monday again and the weather is going back to the mid 70's. I love this kind of weather. By April I am just done with all the rain and horribly gray days of winter. I need the sun to be more prevalent, that way I don't have to use my therapy light. I am so ready for Spring and Summer weather. I'm sure that many of you are in the same boat. Mother nature has been a little sketchy this year all over the nation. I am so sorry for the middle of the country and the tornados that plague them. I hope that Spring weather will arrive soon for all. We are taking advantage of the mild temperatures and are going to take the grandkids to the Zoo. It is a good weekend for a family outing. When the weather permits, I like to do outside stuff with the kids. They need to be away from their handheld devices and out in the fresh air and sunshine. We will have a picnic on site. It should be a lot of fun for adults and children alike. The trip to the Zoo is an adventure in and of itself, since we will be taking the Max train to get there. I hope that you all enjoy your Saturday and that it may be a productive and happy time for all. Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

The weather here is good.. Low 70 to high 60 in the day and in the 40s at night. Maybe not liking that low but the days are nice

Our day here today is weird. Scattered showers is the best way to describe it. Day started out quite warm, but it's supposed to get colder as the day goes on. So far it's still too warm for the shirt I wore in preparation. Who'd have thought it would stay up near 70 all day. My daughter is bugging me to take her out on her bike, but I feel like by the time I drag it out there it's going to be raining again. Sunday we're supposed to get snow. I wish mother nature could make up her mind. One day it's 70 and the next it's 30. I think maybe mother nature might be a bit bipolar herself

Thank you for starting a new conversation for the new month. The weather here in the Pacific Northwest is to die for. It is just beautiful. Sunny with temperatures in the low 70's. I hope that this weather system crosses the States and gives relief to those in the South and East. Spring is coming to all of you who are still stuck in the snow or the yucky weather. I hope that most of April is like this. We have already had more than the rain that we need for the year. We are supposed to get rain again on Monday, but it will clear again on Tuesday brining more sunshine and mellow temps.

Larissa, I hope that you have the time of your life. I am so sorry about your friend. It hurts when a long relationship goes south. Enjoy your family while you have the chance. I miss my brother and sisters a lot. My friend, Christine, and I are planning a road trip, with just us girls this summer. We are hoping to drive to California to see our families in Northern and Central California. We may go as far south as Death Valley, where we have a friend who works for the resort Xanterra there. I am looking forward to the trip. I haven't seen my sisters in two years now. The last time they were here was right before my Dad passed away two years ago in January.

Karen, hang in there. It is not fun to come off any drug. There are so many new medications out there that can be prescribed to you once you are completely lithium free. I'm surprised that your daughter doesn't know that. You will find something just as good or better than your lithium once you and your doctor have a chance to explore the possibilities. I wish you great luck.

I am taking Micah, my grandson, to the park today. It is too good of a day to waste sitting inside and watching TV. It is a day made for swings and monkey bars. As soon as school is out for the week we will go get a strawberry smoothie and stop by the park on the way home. I hope that you all will enjoy your day today, too. Sending positive energy and hugs to all that need them. Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon emoticon

You're right. Everyone makes their own choices. I wouldn't feel too bad. I think I've gotten past not being invited to weddings I've been left out on. 3 were cousins, 2 were "friends" I've had longer than I can remember, and neighbors at that (and those 5 the rest of the family was invited to), and then 2 of my bridesmaids from my wedding.

Thanks for starting the new chat, Audrey! I'm going to re-post what I posted in the March thread.
I'm in LA right now and it is so cold inside my stepdad's house. I was cuddled under the blankets and then went with my brother to the dog park with his dogs and it was so nice and warm outside! My stepdad's place is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Just bad insulation. I am having fun... I'm looking forward to Saturday when I get to see my sister, then spend the night there. Sunday all my dad's kids will be together to watch the finale of The Walking Dead. My little brother is cooking (he works as a cook) and I get to see my sister and older brother. I know it will be a great weekend!

Next week I'm supposed to go out with a couple of my friends that I haven't seen in years. I am looking forward to the rest of my trip. The only bad thing is that my ex-best friend is getting married and she refuses to talk to me... no wedding invite, not even her address so I could send her a birthday card. I'm going to remove her as leader of the bipolar group I'm on with Spark People since she hasn't been there in months. I feel bad, but she makes her own choices.

One of the few good things about the affordable healthcare act, it's relatively easy these days to get coverage for psychological care.

Thanks for the advice. I checked out that site you suggested and only found one psychiatrist in my town (don't have a car so I don't want an out of town doc). Not sure if my insurance will allow him. I'll check it out.

I agree with URBANAUDREYE. I think it is important to find a psychiatrist that will work with you and your regular medical doctor...be it an internist or kidney doctor (unable to spell that speciality right now!!) Tapering off one medication before adding another is the way to go as you need to be able to see if the symptoms return. After you are off the Lithium they can determine a new medication for you. I have some very supportive family members and others that just don't understand and are unable to empathize with my illness. I have many friends that I am able to talk to about anything, including my mental illness. They do not make judgements about my life or my illness. I hope you find a psychiatrist soon in California. They are in charge of your care, not your daughter.

As long as you're being monitored by a doctor while tapering, I don't see why there should be any problem. Your daughter is making ridiculous demands. Your physical health takes precedence... though not to put your mental health on the back burner. But how are you supposed to be healthy mentally if you're on a physical decline? You can't. While I'm sure your daughter is well educated, I think she may need to be educated a bit better on the nuances of mental health. Lithium is by no means the first and foremost medication for bipolar anymore. There are plenty of options, and if/when your doctor feels there is a need to add an additional medication, or make a complete switch, they'll do so. Keep looking for a good psychiatrist. You may be able to do an online search for doctors specializing in bipolar in your area. It took me decades to find the right fit for me. Many of the ones I saw seemed to think that having me doped up was the way to go. Not to say I don't take a slew of medications now, but I'm functional on them. My head is clear and side effects are minimal. My moods are stable... though not completely without incident. But it's also well monitored and I have family that is understanding of my condition. (Okay, maybe that just refers to my husband, parents and brothers... the rest put too much stigma on mental issues to actually learn anything about them).

I have been having some trouble after years of taking Lithium. I have been stable for over 10 years without incident. The lithium is starting to take a physical toll on my body, thyroid and kidneys. Through the care and advice of my primary care physician I have been tapering off very slowly. My numbers have been improving and I feel fine with no mental effect. My one and only Daughter, a doctor of pharmacy, is having a fit. She believes high doses are necessary, even though I have not had any problems for these many years. She is causing me great stress over this issue and believes that I should just take another pill into the mix to help with my physical issues. Now I recently moved to CA from FL to live near her and my Grandkids and everything has been wonderful. Now she is giving me veiled threats that if I don't take my meds I won't be able to see my Grandchildren. I am taking my meds, 300 mg instead of 1,200 mg. She wants me to sign papers giving her a power of attorney over my mental health. I have been negotiating the CA system to get new doctors here. So far they have referred me to 3 different Psychologists. I want to talk about this with someone then have her come to an appointment with me to talk. I don't need a psychiatrist who won't talk just prescribe something. Funny thing is the 3 referrals don't even handle bipolar. Two are marriage counselors and one is what I call a Woohoo California Doctor. I though CA was a more forward state than FL, I guess I was wrong. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest. Anyone else have this kind of problem? At what point do you sacrifice physical health for mental health? Should I go to the point of kidney dialysis or try to find other ways to quiet my mind?
