I am now of the belief that abilify is causing my weight gain. I have suddenly gained 15 pounds and I have been tracking my food and exercising. I see my Dr. the end of next month and plan to discuss this with him.

I have been on abilify for quite some time. I have always maintained my weight within a certain range. Suddenly I have gotten out of control and gained. Trying to find out what caused the rapid change. Considering the medications I take.

I'm fighting to not eat too much... I don't know if it is my meds or not. I need to call my psych tomorrow

hello everyone, thanks for the responses, my doc cut my dosage back to what it was originally and put me on another med temporarily for the facial tics and it has helped already. The facial tics are almost completely gone now thank goodness.

I have also been on abilify long time on and off for ten years. In the time I have been on it I gained weight to got up to 100 pounds heavier than I was before I started it. However, I am not sure if the abilfy caused the weight gain or not. I was already at about 230 pounds when I started it so I was already overweight. Also, everyone else in my family is obese as well. So I am not sure if the abilify caused my bad eating habits or if my environment and genes did.

Yes. It is important to watch this particular side effect as it can become permanent if not resolved quickly (read insert that comes w/Abilify).

I was on Abilify 12 yrs & it really helped me, but I gained about 70 lbs on it. Many friends in support group gained on it, too, & developed metabolic syndrome.

I was able to get off Abilify w/help of DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy ). Can't speak highly enough of DBT. Did weekly for 2 yrs. Then when moved found accelerated program that lasted 14 weeks (drove 4 hrs round-trip for it so you know how much I believe in it!).

Have lost only 30 of the 70 lbs. gained on Abilify, but had gotten to over 200 lbs. so glad to be in onederland at least.

And doing yoga twice a week; hiking twice a week; strength training twice a week; & Cardio, Strength & Balance class once or twice a week (before this 8 weeks of inactivity due to husband's hospitalization & then needed my constant help for several weeks) was my routine (just got it in place for about 6 mos. before husband's health crisis ) had helped so much w/mood.

Now I must tackle diet. My blood pressure is great finally (though do take meds, but cholesterol horrible & can only take meds for that 3 times a week due to side effect of body aches).

just talked with doc and she cut back on my meds and added another med to stop the problem that she believes is a side effect of one of my meds. Hopefully this goes away now. She said to call her back in a week and let her know if it is working.

Look up a bipolar support group if you like to do those kind of things. Try asking your doctor about tardive dyskinesia. It happens to a lot of people. They get twitches, random pain. I take Klonopin for it. You should get help soon.... the longer it goes on the harder it gets. *hugs*

thank you, I have been taking abilify for ten years and have never had this happen before either. Its starting to get better now, think it may have been where I was a little on manic side the last couple of days and feeling like I have to move constantly. Now that I'm not so hyped up its not doing it as bad.

Hi KARMEXO,

I am on Abilify and have been for several years too. My dosage is only 20 mg. I've never had any side effects from the Abilify at all, but then I am not on as high a dosage as you are. I take other meds that give me leg aches and cramps, so they give me another pill to manage those side effects. Perhaps once you talk to your doctor you'll have a better idea if the symptoms might be coming from the Abilify dosage change and whether or not there is something that you can take in addition to your medication regimen now that will help alleviate those side effects, so that you do not have to go off of the Abilify. I wish you good luck. Take care and God bless, Deb

Hey everyone I believe I may be a little hypomanic today. I feel great though! lol I guess that is one sign because I feel over the top today. Anyway, I had a question for anyone who takes abilify. I take abilify 30mg daily and lately I have been having some strange nervous tics(for lack of a better word) I have had a lot of facial movements and stuff. I can stop them if I concentrate on it but I keep wanting to blink my eyes a lot and raise my eyebrows up and down. Weird I know, but I was wondering if it was because of my meds. I got a call out to my doc, just waiting on her to call back. Hope I do not have to go down on abilfy because without it I am in major depression all the time for months on end. I have been on abilify for ten years but have just recently raised dose to the 30 mg from 15 mg
