I am easily distracted. I will begin one task see another which needs to be completed and forget all about the first one. Needless to say little gets accomplished.

Totally. When I am depressed, I have NO motivation. Also, I have borderline personality disorder, so there is no middle ground. I am either doing horrible or amazing. It's usually horrible.

I've been offtrack for so long now. I do think it's the bipolar keeping me that way too. On either end of the spectrum I get derailed. On a "normal" day, I can keep myself in check, but I overeat in both manic and depressive phases. At least in the manic phase I'm active, but days when the depression takes over, not much is going to move me from the couch or bed.

I too have CKD stage 3 due to taking Lithium for 15 years. It was a good medicine though. I got to the point that they couldn't get a regular reading though. My veins are so small that they roll. They called them "spider veins".

Also I remind myself how proud of myself I feel the next day when I haven't overeaten. Plus I feel better physically (easier to do yoga poses) & don't agonize in the closet for 45 minutes trying to find a top to wear that doesn't expose all my bulges & back fat or make me look like a pregnant 61-year-old!

Finding other "self-soothing" skills helps. Knit, read, talk to a friend, write in a journal, watch a funny show, learn calligraphy, take a bath, read a book, do a crossword, paint, do sketches, plan a reward for taking good care of yourself! !

Plus keep trying to get stable. Why take meds if they don't help????

Lithium helped me so much--amazing, but I got kidney damage after only 3 mos. But it showed me that it was possible for me to feel better. After a year of hell got right cocktail, but still do my part to help my moods & have been able to get off some (Abilify, Wellbutrin, Klonopin ).

Still take a lot of meds but do Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), yoga, strength training, cardio (hiking when I can; darn this heat), go to support groups, learn new skills all the time.

Don't wait until you are as old as I am to get stable! !

Best to all...

Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again.

I am like you- I am not going out there in this heat to do anything. Will be glad when we get a break. This is unusual for eastern NC in June. When I am manic, I will get alot of housework done but when I am depressed, I will eat anything that I can find. If I don'[t have it in the house it doesn't get eaten. The best policy I have found is like Larissa- make a list out and stick with it.

I find when I'm depressed I eat more to try and comfort myself. When I'm manic I don't get hungry, just full of excitement. I just need to watch what I buy in the store, because it will come home with me and get eaten. If I don't buy cookies, I can't eat cookies. When I make a grocery list I need to stick to it and not get treats even if I want them. I would love to go for a walk, but it's 99 degrees (heat index) outside. Earlier it was 105. No way am I trying to exercise in that heat.

I know, that is my problem to, My diet and exercise change with my moods. If I'm depressed or down I just dont care weather I am being healthy or not. If I am normal or up, I can get in plenty of exercise and less calories. I guess that's part of being bipolar maybe. I take meds and see dr on a reg basis. I love my doc she is a great doc, but I cant ever seem to get 100% stabilized no matter what I do. I'm either up or down mood wise, just not to the extremes I was without medication. Unfortunately, my diet and exercise follow my moods.

I find it's hard to stay on track when I'm in a depressive episode because I have little to no motivation and EVERYTHING seems impossible.
If I'm feeling stable or hypomanic it is MUCH easier to stay on track. The motivation's there.

I fink that if you get on the scale everyday that it is an easy way to get discouraged. I weigh in once a week. It is true that muscle weighs more than fat so if you get the muscle you will weigh more initially but it will go down. Like they said, go by how your clothes fit or by your measurements. The scale can fool you but the measurements and how your clothes fit will not.

If you want a better measure of your weight, go by how you clothes fit. You can gain muscle weight and lose fat weight, but the muscle is heavier than fat. Don't worry too much about the scale... your measurements speak volumes

First of all, congratulations on the 50 pounds. That's amazing! I get stuck all the time with that same 5 pounds. Right now it's birthdays, anniversaries and holidays that are throwing me off. Everything seems to be happening at once. But in the mean time, I keep working at it. Hang in there and try not to get too discouraged

Congrats on losing 50 pounds! That's a huge accomplishment. I know it's hard when you hit a plateau, but it happens to everyone. I just broke through my plateau and it was hard. You just have to remember why you are doing this in the first place. I don't know if you live alone or what, but you can put little motivational post it notes on places like the fridge or the bathroom. I have a poem on my fridge that's called "Don't Quit" and it helps to remind how I am doing. Also, if you search for articles here on Spark People you can find a lot of help with breaking that plateau. *hugs*

Hi, do you find it hard to stay on track all the time with your diet while having bipolar? I am having such a hard time lately with this. I have lost a regained the same 5 pounds since April. I will do real good for one week or two then do bad for one or two weeks. I don't know if it is because of my moods going up and down or what. Just sometimes I feel much more motivated and focused on losing weight and then sometimes I just don't care. My weight is already out of control but I have lost 50+ pounds this year. The 50+ has came off very slowly because of this. I don't want to quit and give up but I am starting to get discouraged over this. Any advice or ideas?
