My day 5 was turning out the other horse at the barn early when I brought my girl in, and swinging the gates so they don't get frozen in the new snow.

My day 4 was calling the same friend who was worried about the possible decrease of her pension due to the latest legislation. Though many people are affected, I did the research and she, at least, is not for the time being. She had been very worried about it but the category of pension was different than the one she is in. I can't fix things for her and actually need to be careful not to be a pain about it, but I can give her simple information such as "I did research and looked at the long lists, you are in a different category and not affected." I did not suggest being an activist for people affected by Congress' decision, but at the least I will be doing more research and writing informed letters to my Congressbeings once I have good insight into what this change means for people.

My Day 2 was finding something to compliment strangers on. Like, nice hair, stuff like that. I loved doing that.

My Day 3 was helping out my Mother In Law with some Advil and vitamin B-12. She needed it, I had plenty, so I gave them to her.

My day 3 was to call a friend who worries about money all the time and let her know that our health insurance premiums went down, and another work benefit went up ever so slightly. This amounts to $43 a month more flexibility - if you're not watching everything it can get lost, but if you are... it's buffer. And buffer can be good.

Lovely! Anyone, feel free to join in as you wish... while it's most fun to do this 29 days in a row (watch for a boost in 4-6 days!), there is no expectation on this, just roll with it.

My "day 1" was cuts for the fellow in line.

My "day 2" was to send a supportive note to a friend undergoing stress.

I like this idea. I started today without knowing it. There is a homeless man, Carl, who sits at the freeway by my apartment. I gave him a big container of instant tea. He was so happy. I just like doing little things like that.

I don't know if any of you folks have read 29 Gifts, but the short book (and even a whole website at one time) revolves around the advice given to a woman with MS who was feeling very overwhelmed. Her advisor suggested giving -and writing down- one gift a day for 29 days.

Of course I've always resented the advice to "get involved in volunteer work" when I'm down, because 1) at the time I was working 60 hours a week for 40 hours pay doing work in public service, and 2) while excellent advice, it's kind of insulting for someone to say "your problem is you are selfish."

No, my problem is I'm bipolar, scared, have seizures, and have friends who give advice like that. And that said, volunteer work does help, but you have to be able to do said volunteer work, and not take on more when life is so bad you want to die. Which at the time, I did.

So... that said, the book and the practice was actually pretty beneficial, as does writing it down and ideally, sharing it with others on the same path. After about a week of doing this, I noticed a shift, the "lift of the gift"... and then it became fun to see what I could give, even if I had no money. It's not even deliberate much of the time... it just happens....

Yesterday, for example, I was in front of a man with a new baby and a few items in his grocery cart, so I asked him if he'd like to go ahead of me. He did and was appreciative. But even if he had said no.... it would have counted.

So.... I'm thinking it might be time to start a formal 29 days practice again... One thing that folks seem to have to overcome is the idea that if they take credit or even just share what they did, it "doesn't count" - but for this practice, when done as a group, it seems to give that lift, and it seems to inspire others with ideas. (I know of one gal who was very very poor and had moved into a very small trailer -- she gave away her extra blankets from the house she had been living in to the charity thrift shop so that someone else could have them.) That's way more of a gesture than I ever made, but it doesn't have to be a competition - I just felt glad for her that it felt good to her!

Any interest in trying it out in a thread?
