I think reading your stories had scared me more than anything that has happened to me in my life. I have NEVER been a fan of snakes. If I see one crawling across the road it gives me the willies. I start to shiver and shake.

The only thing I can come up with. My DH had an alligator that he kept in an aquarium. It sat on a stand at the end of the couch. Whenever, I would go over to visit, him the alligator would start to hiss and try to get out of the aquarium. I was afraid to be alone in the apartment with it.

Interesting stories ladies!!

In the mid eighties, during the time I owned the Mexican Restaurant, I also owned and operated a Machine Shop. I had my husbands brother David working for us. In my office there was David's Boa Snake in a huge cage betweent the two couches in the corner. David didn't have any other place to keep it. Somehow it got out, and since at the time I lived across the street from the shop, I left my car in the front parking lot. One day or night the Boa got out, he was about 8 feet long; we had no idea how or exactly when he got out, and we found the Boa who had snaked and slithered it's way all around in my car engine compartment. It took two days to get the snake out. David had to take things off of my car engine to help get at the snake. So I couldn't drive anywhere until he got the snake out of my engine. Also it seemed to me when I would sit in my office chair, the snake would stare at me for a long time. Feeding time gave me the willies because they eat live mice UGH. I used to leave when David put mice in the cage. I got sick to my stomach watching the poor mice, and the slithering snake hunting them down. UGH!!

After that happened I dreamed feeling fearful about having a snake appear suddenly and frighten me, had dreams of snakes for years. I've never been afraid of snakes before that. I just don't want to have snakes living in my house or at my work. They give me the heeby jeebys.

I do have to admit that when I was about 6 or 7, on a trip to an amusement park, I encountered a snake in the nearby woods. I was with my mom and dad, and I screamed and ran away as fast as I could. After a while I stopped and realized my mom and dad had not followed. I slowly went back and found them laughing. It was a garter snake and had slithered away as fast as I ran. It scared me and I scared it!

Since then, I have actually picked up snakes on occasion and stroked a large boa constrictor that belonged to a fellow graduate student when I was studying for my Master's degree. He was a snake lover and financed his studies by catching snakes, skunks, and other animals wanted by zoos. He tried to do his thesis on snake learning, but couldn't get a good study design so finally had to do another study.

Unreasonable fear of snakes!!! I was hanging clothes on the line at our farm as a teen and there was a big black bull snake housed in the ditch where we put tree branches to burn. Dad wouldn't burn it as the bulls are great "ratters and mousers". Felt something on my bare feet, look down and screamed as the bull was crawling across my feet. I couldn't take 10 feet of snake and bounded to the porch in 3 leaps (about 150 ft.) & didn't finish the clothes. The neighbor a quarter mile down the road, called to find out what happened! Can't even look at them in a book & find if hard to talk about them as well.

Slow & steady makes a winner of us. Even if we hit pitfalls, get up. Know that a new day is right around the corner.
Try to be all that you can be. Work at it a day at a time.

When I was a young teen, my youth fellowship at church had an outing at a place called Hueco Tanks. It was a desert area with some picnic tables and also some barren hills. One of the guys who had trouble making friends since he was retarded and some thought dorky asked me (since I was his friend) if I would climb one of the hills with him. I said sure. We went up and enjoyed looking out toward where the others were. They looked like little ants. We started back, but didn't remember exactly how we came, so got off the path since it wasn't very distinct. I was somewhat ahead of my friend. I got on an area of gravel and started slipping and slid to the edge of a cliff. I tried getting back up and almost went over. My friend said he would come and get me. I told him to stay where he was since he was wearing dressy shoes with slick soles. I looked in the distance and saw one of the youth and recognized him. I told my friend that when I counted to 3 we should yell together, Sammy HELP. We did that. I saw Sammy jerk around and look up toward us and run to get help. After a while, a couple of guys who were in Boy Scouts were climbing up the cliff carefully. The closest one said he couldn't get any closer, and I would have to jump toward him. I thought that I had no other choice. I could stay where I was and when my muscles gave out, I would fall to my death. I could jump and either make it or fall to my death, but at least I had a chance. So I closed my eyes and jumped toward him. He did catch me. We proceeded downward. They were handing me from one to the other. One would stay with me while the other went down to a stable place and then receive me. At the bottom, one said to me, "OK, you can quit shaking now." I said, "I am not shaking." They both said, "Oh yes, you are!"

It affects me nowadays in that I don't really like getting on ladders unless I really have to. I had dreams for many years about that. I don't like high places in general! Though I do have to say that Heaven doesn't scare me at all since I have had 3 near death experiences and was sent back each time to raise my children for Jesus. It was very hard to leave the presence of Jesus!

When I was about 14 I got up out of bed and went to the bathroom in the middle of the night. When I came back and lifted up my covers to get back into bed, there was a large snake curled up in the middle of my bed!!!!!!!

I screamed louder then I have ever screamed since then. Guess I don't have to tell you, that I woke up EVERYONE in the house. Did I go back to sleep that night? Nope. And from there on for a long time, I had trouble falling asleep.

Has it effected me as an adult?? YES! I am terrified of snakes. The only thing that I am more afraid of is spiders.
