Yes, I also kennel mine up when we are gone. They are happy and safe there. I don't know why people think kenneling is so bad. It's only bad when they are kenneled constantly. Dog behavior mirrors wolf behavior. The dominance/submissive things (eye, mouth licking; standing over, being under the dominant one, etc.) The kennel is like a den. Quiet and safe. Mine sometimes go in them just because they like them. It is a safe haven. People who leave dogs out unattended and alone to roam the house or just rooms are actually leaving their pets (and house!) at risk.

One word of caution about baby gates - instead of constantly opening and closing the gate in the kitchen, I stepped over it all the time. One day I woke up with terrible sciatica pain. Now, for the most part, I open the gate rather than stepping over it. We put the gate up in the kitchen when we're expecting the front door to open for any reason. We have one for the rec room too, but only use it when we're in the room with Bella. When we go out we have to confine her in the crate for her own safety.

We got a baby gate at Walmart (I think it was- or else Target). It is clear/see thru, attaches to the door frame. If you don't like that you wouldn't want it. We had a plastic one before that eventually broke, just wouldn't fit for some reason eventually. This one is GREAT. Much easier to open, you don't have to lean over for a pull up bar to open, nothing across the walkway for people to trip on (as our other one had), etc. I absolutely love it. My suggestion would be to go to the discount stores and look at baby gates to see which one would suit you best.

I use the old fashioned wood baby gate..it is super easy to open..I open and close it multiple times a day...just pull up the wooden bar! It has very small openings...our 6 lb chi scratches on it but in no way can he get through it...it was also very inexpensive and much easier to use than the big plastic ones I had found. I believe I have seen them for sale at Walmart and Target before.

I tend to use baby gates and the ones I have at present have diamond shaped openings of approximately 1 1/2 inches rather than up and down slats. It can open to 42 in.

Maintaining.

Hi!
Does anyone have a recommendation for a pet gate that Chis can't squeeze through? My smallest Chi is about 7 pounds. Our current gate has 2.75" openings between slats and they've figured out they can get through it! I need one that is easy for people to open and close as it is in a major traffic area. Also needs to expand to 36". I'm finding most online descriptions don't include the measurement for space between slats. Thanks so much for any advice on this!
