Choncho is doing great, his teeth came out beautiful and no problems.... I was very, very nervous and talked to the vet tech at great lengths before she took him in, I was very proud of myself I only called 1 time to check on him. I think I must have told her 10 times before she took him away how much he meant to me and how much our family loved him.
She probably thought I was crazy.

I'm happy to hear Serena is eating better, I hope she continues to improve.

((hugs())

I'll keep "thinking" but I'm running out of ideas! Yes, milk isn't good for them, nor cats either! I was thinking meat fat. I know normally I would never do this, but in this circumstance any calories would be good, and I know wild animals eat fat whenever they can, even seed eating birds!

Hi Carol, we give Serena a little ice cream, put butter on some food at times and when she'll eat it, a little bit of peanut butter between meals. My husband wanted to give her milk but I looked online and it seemed that milk isn't too good for dogs. I'm open to any and all suggestions to help her gain weight.

Oh, I hope, hope, hope it continues to go well. Maybe you could try giving her just a bit of fat too, not too much, but for some extra calories?

Hi Carol, eventually we'll try again with another vet. For now, we're concentrating on getting as much food into her as we can, and her appetite was very good today. She ate a tiny jar of baby food throughout the day and then had mashed potatoes. Later I'll give her canned dog food and then try to get her to have some of the supplement. She doesn't like that anymore so we have to disguise it. She even seems to be eating a little bit faster. I believe there is hope for her.

I'm sorry Marilyn -
I'm sending big hugs and prayer out to Serena and your family. This must be so difficult, I'm at least happy to hear she doesn't seem to be suffering and is still interested in eating. I hope you seen a turn for the best in her health soon.

Oh, I'm soooo sorry to hear this Marilyn. I think I would still try and see another vet. You never know- they may have an idea. Or at least you'd know you've tried everything you can.
Many hugs, and more prayers for you.

Hi Carol and all my team buddies,

When you wrote that your vet said as long as a pet is still eating, there's hope - I took those words to heart and that's what's keeping us going now. Serena is still losing weight and is pathetically thin. There are times when considering all her medical problems, it almost seems like time to let her go........but she is still very interested in food and will lap the food up from her dish. It's harder these days for her to chew anything but I liquify even soft dog food in the blender and we're feeding her baby food with other things mixed in. Anyway, we took her to a new vet today but she never got to see the doctor. They were in the middle of a computer crisis and the longer we sat there not being seen or acknowledged, the worse we felt. My husband began to get a severe pain in his side (I think from the stress of Serena's condition) so I asked when Serena would see the doctor, and was told it would be "quite a while." Now we're thinking it might be best to let nature take its course since Serena doesn't seem to be in any pain and she's still active and alert. We might change our minds at any time and try to see another vet, but for now, please continue to pray for her and for us to know how to deal with this. Thanks so much.
Here's a link a picture I took on June 15. You can see her little tongue hanging out of her mouth if you look closely.
Hugs, Marilyn

Hi Everybody, I want to thank you all once again for your concern and prayers. I never thought I would be wishing to hear the sound of Serena's barking, but when that day comes my DH and I will be the happiest people in NJ. We'll settle for any improvement of course, but we're not giving up hope that she'll be normal again.

Hi Starr, Serena had dental surgery a few months ago. Now she can no longer fully open her mouth to eat or bark. One side of her mouth seems paralyzed and her tongue hangs out the other side all the time. We adopted her from a shelter around a year ago that had rescued her from a terrible hoarding situation. She was doing well with us in spite of some health problems, but now she only weighs 3 lbs., down from 5 lbs. A little over a week ago we thought we were going to lose her but she seems to be improving. Thanks so much for your prayers. Serena really needs a miracle.

I am so sorry to seem so insensitive, but I guess that I missed the postings of what happened to Serena. I know that she is severely missing Sasha, but is there something else wrong with her too? I am definitely sending out prayers for both of you. I so hope that Serena is going to be ok.
Love to you both,

Oh, Marilyn, this makes me "happy" to hear she's better, but soooo sad... Poor baby. Poor you. BUT- she's still eating and improved appetite is such a good sign. I had a vet tell me that as long as they are still eating there's hope. I had a young dog that had something we couldn't figure out what was wrong (turned out it was Lyme's disease). I had to hand feed for awhile also, we had to carry her in her basket (she would scream - literally - if you tried to touch her, things must have hurt so) to go outside so she didn't have to go up and down even 1 step. This went on for 3 months. I thought we would have to put her down. That was when my vet said that to me. Animals and their will to live can be amazing. We'll keep praying for you and Serena.

Hi everyone, I really appreciate your concern and suggestions to help Serena. She is managing to eat some cottage cheese, food that I liquify in the blender, (chicken, hamburger meat and rice or cereal) plus ice cream and baby food. She's also eating dog food as long as it's very soft. There are times I still have to sit on the floor and feed her by hand - even wet, gooey dog food, but last night she stood at her dish for a WHOLE HOUR, slowly licking her dog food until it was almost finished. Then she came over to where I was sitting on the floor and put her paws on my lap and wouldn't move. We also give her a supplement that adds a lot of calories. We don't see any weight gain yet but her appetite is much improved.

She's still pathetic looking - her tongue hangs out one side of her mouth and she drools a lot from the other side when she eats. It may be wishful thinking but I think she's using the other side of her mouth to eat a little bit. I can't say she's back to normal and maybe she never will be, but compared to a week ago, it almost seems like a miracle. Time will tell for this little girl.

Serena never lost her stubborn streak - still can't get near her with the medicinal wipes for her mouth or even with a wash cloth or paper towel. Maybe I'll try to clean her up while she's fast asleep. She still occasionally wets on the carpet, but now she doesn't even have the decency to go to her pen when I say "who did this?" I can't bring myself to raise my voice at her so she's totally spoiled now.

Prayers for her recovery are very much appreciated. The day she regains all the weight she lost and is able to open her mouth and bark again will be a day to celebrate.

Hugs to all of you.
Marilyn
