Hi Eileen, I sure hope Serena's problem is the same that most Chis have and nothing worse. Sasha kind of outgrew her "honking" episodes. Serena has inched her way into our hearts like we never thought she would. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers, and a very good New Year to you and yours.

Hi Marilyn. I am so sorry to her about Serena! We have had all our Chi's cough, gage, choke, or whatever you wish to call it, when they got excited. In all of them it was the elongated epiglottis or uvula. It "vibrates" in the throat and causes the sounds as they try to control it. Certainly get it checked out but if it is what all ours had, it is not uncommon and you have to wait it out.

I will say some prayers for you and your babies. You are in my thoughts. Take care and I hope you can have a happy New Year.

Eileen

Hi Cookie, thanks for your concern for Serena. I'm hoping that Serena's heart murmur hasn't gotten any worse in the past 8 months because her teeth are in need of attention and they won't operate if she isn't healthy enough. She came to us in pretty sad shape but she loves to cuddle and play and she's part of us now.

Hi Megan, Sasha used to do the "reverse honking" when she moved too quickly or got excited, but she doesn't do that much anymore. When it happened I rubbed her throat. The problem with Serena seems a little different. I hope it's something easy to deal with and not something more serious. It took a while for Serena's personality to come through because of her unfortunate past life, but she's a real little character now - extremely lovable and willful. I wish we had her from the beginning of her life but it's wonderful seeing her overcome her fears. Thanks for your good thoughts and advice. I'll let you know what her vet says.

Just a thought here, but have you had a Chi that sounds like they're gagging or choking but it's that flap inside their neck that is flipping? I want to call it a patella, but I know that's not the right word. It sounds like that word, though. Anyway, Jasmine does it all of the time when she gets excited and I always tell her to slow down and breath.

I would still ask the doctor, but I do hope it's nothing serious. Sending good thoughts your way:)

Happy New Year My Friends.

I wish everyone in our group the best of health and much joy in 2011. Special get-well wishes to you, Kris!!!!!

Sasha is doing well in spite of her medical problems but Serena is causing us a lot of concern. She loves to play but as soon as she gets the least bit excited she begins to gasp and choke. She was diagnosed with a low-level heart murmur, but now something seems to be seriously wrong so we'll try to get an appointment with her vet next week or as soon as possible.

Best wishes,
Marilyn
